Inattendance:TarquinMcDonald(MD,BathRugby)WelcomeKevinLawrence(Chairman)welcomedthememberspresentandthankedthemforattendingtheAGM.HeexplainedthatTomSutton(secretary)wasunabletobepresentashewasundergoingacourseofmedicaltreatmentandwasnotwellenoughtoattend.HeexplainedthatheandAnneKirkhamwouldcovertheformalitiesoftheeveningbetweenthemandthatPatLawrencewouldtaketheminutes.HestressedthatAGMisanimportantmeetingasBRSCbelongstoallitsMembersandtheCommitteewelcomedtheopportunitytoaccountforitsstewardshipoftheClubduringthepastyearandengagewithasmanymembersaspossibletoshapethedirectionforBRSCfortheforthcomingyearandbeyond.

KevinthenwelcomedandintroducedTarquinMcDonaldwhohadonceagainagreedtodeliverareviewoftheseasonandupdatebriefing,lookingaheadtothenextseason.SpeakerTarquinbeganbyacknowledgingthatlastseason’sperformancehadbeeninconsistentespeciallyinthelatterstagesofthePremiershipandtheEuropeanChallengeCup.Hewaslookingforwardtotheforthcomingseasonandstatedthatthetargetfornextseasonwouldbeatop4finishinthePremiershipandtheknockoutstagesoftheChampionsCup.AsastartaprogrammeofSeasonTicketHoldermeettheCoacheseventswouldbepromulgatedand,ascurrently,BRSCwouldbegivenanallocationofplacestodistributetoBRSCmembers.20-25playerswhowerenotonInternationaldutywouldbereportingbackon15thJunewiththeothershavingindividual,tailored,returntoworkprotocols.ConsistencyofPerformanceTarquinexplainedthatinordertodeliveraconsistentperformancenextseason,weneededtorefinehowweplaythegameandtherewerethreekeyareasoffocus:RefinementArefinementinthewayweplaythegameisneededifwearetoachievethegoalsidentifiedfornextseason.FitnessTheStrengthandConditioningteamhadplanstoimprovefitnessandfitnesstestingtomaketheteamthefitterthananyother.StandardsandBehavioursTarquincommentedthatthisnotonlyrelatedtoeventswhichhadcomeintothepublicdomainaboutaregrettablealcoholincidentinvolvingplayersattheRec,butalsolotsoflittlebehaviourswhichhadbeenexhibitedthroughtheyear.ItwasintendedtofreshenupthecaptaincyandgrowtheleadershipgroupstomakesurethattheysettherightexamplethroughouttheClub.RecruitmentTarquinwasnotabletoprovidedetailbutconfirmedthatrecruitmentfor2or3positionsintheFrontRowandtheBackswasunderway.CoverforTomElliswasalsobeingsought.Hecommentedthatsquadsizeisn’tsomethingthatcanbequicklyaltered.BathhadinvestedinqualityoverquantityandwereconsciouslyinvestingintheAcademy,notleastbecausetheSalaryCapnowenablesallowancesofupto£600ktobeawardedforplayerscomingthroughtheAcademystructure.AcademyTarquinthenwentontoexplainthatfollowingAndyRock’sappointmenttheClubhasnowoverhauledtheAcademygrassrootscoachingstructure.Coachingforthe13to16yearagegrouphadpreviouslybeenoutsourcedbutnow80-90%wasnowoverseenbyBathRugbycoaches.TheyhadforgedastrongrelationshipwithBeechenCliffSchoolfor16to18yearolds,withtheClubsettingtherugbytrainingandstrengthandconditioningprogramme.Relationshipsstillexistwithother

schoolsinthecatchmentareasuchasMillfieldandSherborne,buttheysettheirownrugbyprogrammes.Onreaching18thosegraduatingintotheBathAcademywillbeenteredontoadegreecourseattheUniversityofBath.Theywillallliveandboardtogether(muchlikethestructureSaracenshaveinplace)andwillcompeteintheBritishUniversitiesrugbySuperLeague.Thiswillprovidethestructure,standardsandbehavioursattheoutsetandwilldeliveragoodentrylevelwithincreasedcontacttimewithBathRugby,bringingmoremoney,increasedsquadsizeandmakeusmorecompetitive.CoachingTarquincommentedthatTobyBoothhadnowbeenwithBathforabout6seasonsandDarrenEdwardsaround4seasons.HecommentedthatStuartHooperhaddoneagoodjobinaPlayerDevelopmentroleandwasreallykeytotheClub.HehadworkedcloselywithAndyRockandwouldhavealongtermfuture.ThisseasonhewillbepartofthecoachingsetupandworkwithToddBlackadderondefence.TarquinconfirmedthateachplayercontinuestohaveanIndividualDevelopmentPlanbutthatitnowincludesmorethatjustonpitchperformance,encompassingSkills,MentalaspectsandPlayingperformancemetrics.

AtthispointthereweresomequestionstoTarquinfromthefloor.Q.Istheamountof‘ballinplaytime’whichseesBathatthebottomofthestatisticstableafactorinourinjurytoll?A.Tarquinconfirmedthatwehadthelowestballinplayinthepremiership,withExeterbeingthehighest.Heconsideredthistobeduetopoorkickingandtoomuchdefendingandacknowledgedthatdefendersgetinjuredmoreoftenthanballcarriers.Hereiteratedthatchangingthebalancewaspartoftherefinementneededtoourgame.Q.Howdoweensurethatweretainthebesttalentinthe16to18agegroup?A.WhentheygototheUniversityofBaththeyarecontractedtoBathRugby.Thiswillensurewedon’tmisstalentedplayersinourareaandmoredirectlyemployedcoacheswillassistwiththis.Q.Aretheregoingtobemore‘A’leaguegamesthisseason?A.It’slookinglikelythattherewillbe8‘A’leaguegamesthisseason.BathRugbyhasnoplanstoemulateotherclubsandchargeanentryfee,butwillcontinuewithdonationsinlieutogototheBathCommunityFoundation.Longterm,andwiththefinancialsituationofsomeclubsinthatleague,thereisdiscussiononrestructuringtheChampionship,withpotentialforitbecomingthetopleveloftheamateurgameandeachPremiershipClubhavingaBteaminanewleaguebutthisisatleast4yearsaway.TarquincommentedthatthebiggestchallengeisgettinggametimeforupandcomingplayersandthisisaprimedriverinthecloserelationshipwithBathUniversity.TheRECTarquinwentontotalkabouttheplansfortheRec.Heconfirmedthatworkwasstillongoingonanewstadium.TheprojectisnowknownastheStadiumforBathandconstructionshouldbecompletedbySeptember2021,allowingustokickoffthe2022seasoninournewstadium.Theintentionistodevelopabespokewebsiteto

keeppeopleapprisedofprogress.HestatedthatoneofthelessonslearnedoverthelastfewyearshadbeentheneedtoengagewithallstakeholdersacrosstheCity.Hisvisionisthatthenewstadiumwillbecomeadestinationandservethecommunityaswellasprovidinganexceptionalstadiumforwatchingrugby.ADevelopmentBriefistobepublishedandthetargetistoappointanarchitectinSeptembertostartthedesignprocessandsubmitaplanningapplicationintheSpringof2018.Heconfirmedacapacityof18,000withasimilaramountofterracingascurrently.TheClubwouldoperatewiththecurrentconfigurationforthenext2seasonsbutconfirmedthatoverthesummertheEastStandwouldbemovedthreemetresbackandthetouchlineoneandahalfmetresoutfromtheWestStand.Thisshouldimprovethesightlinesinallareas.HecommentedthatcompliancewithBuildingRegulationshadresultedinachangetothesizeofthenewweststandconcourseduringlastseason’sconstruction.Thishadconsequentlyhadadetrimentalimpactonsightlinesfromthestand.HeconfirmedthatalloptionsforthelocationofatemporaryfacilityinBathduringconstructionarebeingexaminedinconjunctionwithB&NEScouncil.InanswertoaquestionheconfirmedthatTwertonParkwastoosmalltobeaviableconsiderationandlocationsasfarasBristol,SwindonandLansdownhadbeendiscounted.RespondingtoanotherquestionwhetheranewMPwoulddelaytheproject,Tarquinconfirmedhehadyettomeetthenewincumbentbuthopefullythiswouldnotbeanissue.ConclusionTarquinstatedthat93%ofSeasonTicketHoldershadrenewedthisseasonandthatmovingcurrentSeasonTicketHolderswhohadrequestedaseatchangewasbeingfinalised.Premiummemberswouldthenbeofferedopportunitytopurchaseseasontickets.Hethankedallmembersfortheircontinued,loyal,supporthomeandawayandsaiditmeantalottoeveryoneattheClub.HethankedJanandMikeWarringtonforalltheirhardworkinarrangingSupporters’travelbothhomeandabroadandwaspleasedthattheireffortshadbeenrecognisedattherecentBathRugbyAwards.InresponsetoaquestionheconfirmedthatanewTrainingwearkitwouldbeavailableinJuly2017andanewEuropeankitreleasedforpurchaseinearlyAugust.AquestionfromtheflooraskedforearlynotificationforgamesswitchedfromapreferredSaturdayafternoon.TarquincommentedthatgamesareusuallyonlymovedbecauseofTVcoveragescheduling.HecommentedthatassoonaschangesareknowntheyarecommunicatedbutthatthisseasontherewillbenoThursdaynightEuropeangames.HehasalreadygivenanundertakingtosplitanymovedgamesbetweenFridaynightsandSundays,withaslightbiasforFridays.Sundaysgamescreatemassiveissuesforlocalresidents.AnotherquestionfromthefloorrelatedtoSeasonTicketHolderswishingtopurchaseadditionalticketsfornon-seasonticketholders.Currentlythereisnoflexibilityto‘exchange’aseasonticketforanotherseatinthegroundwhenextraticketsarepurchasedsothatguestscansittogether.TarquinaskedKevintoobtaincontactdetailsforthemembersohecouldconsidertheissueoffline.(POSTMEETINGNOTE:KevinLawrencepassedemailcontactdetailsaftertheAGMon14June2017).

4.MinutesofthelastAGM(Secretary)MinutesoftheAnnualGeneralMeetingheldonTuesday31stMay2016hadbeenpublishedonthewebsiteandalimitednumberofcopieswereavailableatthemeeting.TherewerenoquestionsormattersarisingnotcoveredduringthebusinessofthemeetingandtheMinuteswereapprovedandsignedbytheChairman.

5.MembershipSecretary’sReportAnneKirkham’sreportiscontainedinfullatAnnexBtotheseMinutes.ThekeypointsshemadearethatBRSCMembershipforlastseasonhadheldupremarkablywellandhadalmostreachedthe1,000mark.Thefinaltotalof981washugelyencouragingandwewilllooktobuildonthatthisyear,focusinghardonrecruitmentaswellasretainingcurrentmembers.AnnealsoexplainedthatwehadreviewedtheprocessfortheAwardofHonoraryLifeMembershipstorecogniseexceptionalcontributions.Wewouldliketomakebetteruseoftheprocessandhavepublishednewguidanceforproposingcandidatesforconsideration.

6.Treasurer’sReport

EricaEdwardsfullreportisattachedatAnnexCtotheseMinutes.EricawasabletopresentaverypositivereporttotheAGMmeantthatasaresultofcontinuedrigorousfinancialmanagementandplanningduringapotentiallyexpensive20thAnniversaryyearwhenourincomefromMembershipsreduced,webrokeevenduringtheyearandactuallycameoutslightlyaheadoflastyear’sclosingpositionwithabalanceof£6759.81.Thissustainedgoodfinancialperformancemeansthatwecanlooktoinvestsomemoneyin17/18toimproveservicestoMembersandplanwithconfidenceforthefuture.

7.Chairman’sReport

KevinLawrence’sreportisatAnnexDtotheseMinutes.KevinthoughtthatitwasimportanttoemphasisethattheCommitteeMemberswereabletopresenttotheMembershipaClubwhichisfinanciallyresilientandwithastrongmembershipbase.OurrelationshipswithBathRugbycontinuetodevelopatalllevels,withBRSCabletobringthesupporters’perspectivetoawholerangeofissuesincludingthestadiumredevelopmentwork.Kevinreflectedthat2016/17wasour20thAnniversaryyearandhefeltthatwecouldlookforwardwithconfidencetothenext20aswecontinuetogrowasthebestSupporters’Clubsupportingtheverybestrugbyteam!8.MembershipSubscriptionsKevinLawrenceconfirmedthatnochangestosubscriptionlevelswereproposedandthememberspresentagreed.ItwassuggestedthatBRSCincludeBusinessCardswhenpostingoutcorrespondenceortogiveouttopeopleduringtherecruitmentdriveandAnneKirkhamcommentedthatthiswasagoodideaandwouldbetakenforward.ItwasalsonotedthatanewGazebowouldberequiredatsomepointandDavidRawlingsproposedthat£1000beearmarkedandthiswasagreedbythemembershippresent.9.Pre-notifiedmattersfordiscussionTheChairmanreportedthatnoitemshadbeenreceivedunderthisheading.10.NominationofScrutineersAsthepoststobeelectedwerenotcontested,theChairmanannouncedtherewasnoneedforthenominationofScrutineers.11.ElectionoftheCommitteea)SecretaryTomSuttonwastheonlynominationreceivedandhewasdeclareddulyre-elected.KevinLawrencethankedTomforallhishardworkandtheexcellentjobhewasdoingonbehalfofBRSC.b)TreasurerEricaEdwardswastheonlynominationreceivedandshewasdeclareddulyre-elected.EricawasagainthankedforherexcellentworkonbehalfofBRSC.c)CommitteemembersSallyKnight,PatLawrence,IanRooney,ChristineKnightandChristineWebbhadallbeenappropriatelyproposedandseconded,andwereelectedtoserveontheCommittee.

d)Out-goingCommitteeKevinthankedtheout-goingmembersoftheCommittee,JenWilcoxandRichardWinter.HethankedthemforalltheirhardworkandsupportoftheyearandextendedcongratulationstoJenandCraigMaceyfortheirweddinginSeptember.12.BRSCCharityFundraising2016-17KevinLawrencereportedthat£1489hadbeenraisedoverthecourseoftheseasonforParkinson’sUKBathandDistrictBranchandreadoutaletterofthanksfromJennyCleeve,acopyofwhichwasalsoondisplay.KevinexplainedthattheCommitteehadagainbeenkeentoinvolvethemembershipinselectingthenextBRSCCharityrecipientsandanon-lineandpostalvotehadbeenheld.Ashortlist,withappropriatebackgroundinformation,oftwopossiblecharitieshadbeenpresentedforadecision.

• AnneKirkhamannouncedthattherehadbeen155votesreceivedasfollows.HeadwayBathandDistrict–83votes.MotorNeuroneDiseaseAssociationSouthandEastSomersetGroup-72votes

• KevinLawrencethenrequestedthattheAGMendorsetheoutcomeofthevote,whichwasapproved.HeadwayBathandDistrictwouldthereforebethenominatedBRSCCharityoftheYearinseason2017-18.

13.ConstitutionKevinLawrencecommentedtherewerethreeproposedchangestotheConstitution.AttachedatAnnexE,hecommentedthattheproposedamendmentsreflectedrealityandthewaythevariousprocesseshadevolved.Theamendmentswerevotedandapprovedforincorporation.KevinwentontoexplainthatthisyearhewasabletoconfirmthatCliveHoskinhadvolunteeredtoaudittheaccountsattheendofthenextBRSCfinancialyearandthankedhimforhiscontinuedsupportandhardworkforBRSC.CliveHoskinwasdulyappointedasauditorfortheforthcomingyear.14.AnyOtherBusiness–notifiedinadvancebytheduedateTheChairmanreportedthatnoitemshadbeenreceivedunderthisheading.15.RelevantMattersforfurtherconsiderationoftheCommitteea)BarbaraHillcommentedthatitwasdifficulttogetplacestoattendeventsrunbyBathRugbyatFarleighHouse.Kevinconfirmedthatateveningslike‘MeettheCoaches’BRSChadbeenprivilegedtohaveitsownallocationandthesecouldonlyoperateona‘firstfirstservedbasis’butthatpeopleshouldconsiderwhethertoapplyforspacesiftheyhadalreadyattendedsimilareventstoallowotherstoattend.b)DavidRawlingsaskedwhethertheonlinebookingformforevents,especiallytheAwardsSuppercouldbemadesimpler,especiallywhenbookingfornon-membersasthisinvolvedatwostageprocess.EricaEdwardsthoughtthismightbedowntotheplatformused,butundertooktoinvestigate.

MembershipSecretary’sReportGoodeveningladies&gentlemen.JustasBathRugbynarrowlymissedoutonaPremiershipPlay-offplace;BRSCnarrowlymissedoutonbreakingthe1000membertargetsetatthestartoftheseason.Weclosedthemembershipon30thAprilwith981membersonourbooks.Despitethisbeingshortoflastyear’smagnificenttotalof1107itdoesconfirmtheupwardtrendshownoverthepast4years.Recruitmenthasagainbeenverypositive;257newmembersfromawidegeographicareahavejoinedBRSC;DubaitoAustraliaandevenacouplenamedBanahanfromJersey.However,onceagainthisseasonanumberofmembersdidnotrenew;themajoritywerenewmembersbutsomeweremembersoffairlylongstanding.Reminderemailsseemtohavelittleeffect;whennextseason’smembershipopensIwilltryonefinalreminder/invitationtorenewandhopethatthisencouragesapositiveresponse.Weneedtoaskourselveswhatmorecanwedotoretainmembers.Arewenotlivinguptoexpectations?Arewenotprovidingtheservicethattheyexpected?AsthecapacityoftheRecincreasesweneedtofocusonbringingtheexistenceofBRSCandwhatitofferstotheattentionofnotonlynewSeasonTicketHoldersbutalsothecasualsupporterwhomayonlyattendafewgamesbutwhowouldliketobekeptuptodatewithinformationandhavetheopportunitytoattendourevents.Ifyouhaveanyideasastohowwecandothismoreeffectivelypleaseletusknow;wemaybemissingsomethingobvious!!Aspartofour20thAnniversaryseasonthecommitteere-visitedtheideaofHonoraryMembershipsincludingtheprocessfornominationandpossiblecriteriafortheaward.Theresultingdocument“BathRugbySupporters’ClubAwardofHonoraryMemberships”whichclarifiestheprocess,willbepublishedonourwebsitealongwiththenamesofourcurrentHonoraryMembers.Thereisalsoacopydisplayedonthebluenoticeboardsatthebackoftheroom.ItwasalsoagreedthateachHonoraryLifeMembershouldbepresentedwithacertificateandaspecialLifeMembers’Badge.Atour20thAnniversaryCelebrationEvening,threeofourexistingHonoraryLifeMembers,SueAndrew,JanWarrington&MikeWarringtonwerepresentedwiththeircertificatesandbadges.TheremainingHLMs,TonySpreadbury&PennyDalewereunabletobepresentandarrangementsweremadeforthemtoreceivetheirawards.TwonewawardsofHonoraryLifeMembershipwerealsomadeatthiseventtoBobCalleja(formerCEOatBathRugby)andtoKelvinBrunton

ThecommitteealsoinauguratedtheawardofHonoraryAnnualMembershiptorecognisethecontributionbyaBRSCmemberofprofessionalskillsandexpertiseforthebenefitofBRSC.TheonlycurrentholderofthisawardisAlanThomasagraphicdesignerwhohasdonealltheart&designworkforourmembershipcards&badgesforthepastfouryears.HisgenerosityhassavedBRSChundredsofpounds.HonoraryAnnualMembershipisreviewedeachyear.ThecommitteecontinuetoworkhardthroughouttheyeartopromoteBRSCamongsttheBathfaithfulandtoprovideinformationaboutthebenefitsofmembership

• WecontinuetohaveaveryvisiblepresenceateveryhomegamewithourgazebosituatedintheSupporters’VillageareaadjacenttotheWilliamStreetentrance.ThislocationhascertainlyincreasedourinteractionwithsupportersofbothBath&visitingteams.ThisseasonwehaveevenmanagedtousethegazeboforthemanyThursday&Fridaynightfixturesbyusingcampinglights.Weareawarethatthereareasignificantnumberofsupporterswhoneverventureroundtothatpartoftheground;itwouldbegoodtohaveasecondbaseontheWestsideofthegroundbutcurrentlythereisnoconvenientpositionavailableandwedon’thavesufficientpersonneltodothis.

Thisyearwehavecollected£1,489forcharity(areductionof£1,265overlastyear).Thesedonationscamefromourmembersandotherrugbysupporters.Thedropinmoniescollectedisduetolastyear'sone-off150thDinnercelebrationsattheBathRacecourse.BRSCMemberChrisHuntgaveusasignedshirt.Wedecidedtoraffleitatour20thAnniversarycelebrationandsoldraffleticketsthroughoutthefirsthalfoftheseason.Youkindlydonated£398.TheplayerssoldraffleticketsatourAwardsSuppertotheamountof£502,aslightreductionvlastyear.WechargedanentryfeeaswellassoldraffleticketsforourCharityChristmasQuiz.Wesoldpriorseason'sbadgesfor£210-mainlyviatheonlineshop.BonjourBrivedonationswere£49-turnoutwaslow.Otherone-offdonationscameto£39.Ittookussometimetofindasuitablecharitytodonatelastyear'scollectionatBienvenueToulon.TheexchangerateworsenedsowemadeupthedifferenceoutofBRSCfunds.WebPresenceOuronlineshophasnowbeeninplacefor4years.72%ofmembershipsubscriptionsarenowpaidonlineandasimilarpercentageofoureventticketsarealsosoldinthisway.TheonlineshopusestheshoppingcartsoftwarefromEcwid-whichisusedbymorethan1millionsellersin175countries.WeusePayPalforonlinepayments.Wecontinuenottochargeextrafortheuseofouronlineshopvsthemoretraditionalmethodsofpaymentbecausethebenefitsofespeciallyonlinemembershipapplicationsfaroutweighthesmallon-cost.

Thisyearwehavespentslightlylessthanwereceivedasincome.ExpenditureLevelIamoftheopinionthatwehaveachievedareasonablebalancebetweenthelevelofcostsweincurononesideandthelevelofprofessionalismwetrytoachieveontheotherside.BankBalanceOurbankbalanceasattheendofAprilis£8,507.Outofthatamount,£1,489willbedonatedtotheParkinson'sUK,Bathanddistrictbranch.Afurther£258relatestoexpenditureincurredthisyearbutwherethechequehasnotbeencashedyet.Thisleavesuswithfundsof£6,759.FinancialPlanningItisgreattobeinapositionnowtodosomefinancialplanning.Wehavekeptthehealthybalancethatweachievedduetolastyear'smagnificentmembershipincrease.WerecognisetherealitythatwenowpayashareofthecostsforsomefunctionsheldintheClubhouse.LastyearImentionedthatwewouldbelookingtoimproveourITsystems.Thisistakinguslongerthanwethought,butwehavetackledthemostimportantonefromyourperspectiveandimplementednewbulk-emailsoftware.Thesoftwareisfreeforusaswedonotexceedthenumberofemailaddressesheldnorthenumberofemailssentthattriggersthepay-forversion.WehaveupgradedouronlineshopsoftwareandnowuseoneofEcwid'spay-forplans.Thisprovidesuswiththeopportunitytosellmorelinesaswellas24/7onlinesupport.Wearelookingintoimprovingourbackofficesystems-e.g.membershipmanagementandaccounts,andperhapsevenmatchdaypaymentoptionsotherthancashorcheque.Wearealsolookingintomakingoursocialmediaoutputeasiertomanage.

Wewillprobablyneedanewgazebo.WewillworkhardovertheSummertofindsponsors,inparticularfortheAwardsSupper.However,wecannotrelyonanuncertainsourceofincome.Overthepast6yearswehaverebuiltthefinancesofBRSCfromalmostzerotoagoodlevel.Wenowhaveacontingencyfundtocoverouractivitiesshouldweencounteracatastrophiclossofincome.Weneedtocontinuethisgoodworkandensurethatwearenotreliantonjustasinglesourceofincomethatisnotincreasingatthesamespeedasourcosts.FinallyCommitteeMembersarenotreimbursedfortravelcosts.WealwayspurchaseourownticketstoBRSCevents.AnycostsareonlyreimbursedtoCommitteeMembersafterbeingagreedinadvanceandclaimedwithareceipt.MythankstoCliveHoskinforhisexpertiseandhelpinproducingtheauditedaccountsintimeforthisAGM.

CHAIRMAN’SREPORT

Introduction.

Onceagain,manythanksforattendingtheAGMtonight.I’vesaidthisatthelast

coupleofAGM’s,butIcan’tover-emphasisetheimportanceofthismeeting.

Asyourcommittee,weareofcourseguidedbytheConstitutionintermsofthe

purposeandobjectivesofBRSC.Withinthoseguidelineswehavearesponsibilityto

strivetodeliverin-yearthebestpossibleservicestoourMembers.Thatincludes

puttingonevents,maintaininganddevelopingmeansofcommunication

engagementwithmembersorindeedactingorspeakingonbehalfofBRSConissues

thatyourepresenttous.

Butthere’salsoastrategicrolewhichisperhapslessvisiblebutwhichisequally

important.2016/17wasBRSC’s20thAnniversaryseasonandwhilstwe’vecelebrated

that,asaCommitteewe’vealsobeenconsciousthatwehavearesponsibilityto

ensurethatBRSCisinbusinessforanother20yearsandcontinuesitsaspirational

developmenttobethebestindependentSupporters’Clubsupportingthebestrugby

clubinEurope.

ThereisanexcitingfutureaheadforBathRugbyandasyourChairmanmyvisionfor

BRSCisoneofavibrant,growingorganisationoperatingonasoundandresilient

businessmodelwhichcanmakeavaluable,andvalued,contributiontothe

developmentoftheClubthatweallsupport,ensuringthatthesupporters’

perspectiveisheardasanimportantstakeholder.

EverythingthatwedoasyourCommitteeisaimedatdeliveringthebestpossible

servicestoBRSCmembersandtheAGMgivesustheopportunitytoaccounttoyou

forouractionsduringtheyearandalsotoseekyourcontinuingapprovalofthe

directionthatwearetaking.Thatsaid,asacommitteewe’veworkedhardatbeing

accessibleandoneofthethingsthat’spleasedmemostduringthelastyearhas

beentheincreasinginteractionwithmembers,eitherfacetofaceorviaemail,

phoneorsocialmedia.That’sgreatandfeedback(positiveornegative)isalways

welcome.

So,howhavewedonethisyear?

BRSC:“MOT”

LastyearIintroducedthispartofmypresentationbydescribingitasaquick“MOT”

andifyoudon’tmindI’llstickwiththesameanalogy.

AsIsaidinmyopeningremarks,thisyearhasseenhugemanagementofchange

issuesregardingthecoachingandplayingstaff,withsomeuncertaintiesthatwere

onlyfinallyresolvedlateintheseason.Coupledwiththeinternationalabsencesand

aprettymuchunprecedentedinjurylistwhichsawmanyofourkeyplayers

unavailableforlongperiods,itwouldbefairtosaythatit’sbeenabitofaroller

coasterride.

Neverthelessyou’vejusthearddetailedpresentationsfromAnneKirkhamandErica

Edwards,whichshowthatdespiteallthat’shappenedourMembershipnumbersand

financialpositionarebothinremarkablygoodshape.

Afterthedisappointmentofthe2015/16seasonweanticipatedadropoffin

membershipnumbersandatthestartoftheyearwethoughtthat1000was

probablyambitiousunderthecircumstancesbutneverthelesssomethingthatwe

shouldaimfor.Wegotprettyclosetothatintheendwhichishugelyencouraging.

AsIsaidlastyear,Ithinkit’sreasonabletoinferfromthisthatourproductoffering

asaSupporters’Clubseemstobeattractiveandthatthepricingisaboutright.It

alsoseemstomethatwiththeincreasingcapacityattheRec,therearealotof

peoplewhowouldliketobepositivelyengagedinsupportingBathRugbybutfor

whomSeasonTicketownershipisnotanoption.BRSCoffersthatsortofattractive,

positiveengagementatanaffordableprice.Membershiprenewalsarethe

cornerstoneofourcontinuingfinancialviability,butduringthenextyearwewillalso

focusonrecruitment.

There’snothinglikewordofmouth,sopleasegetoutthereanddoyourpart!

Sustainability.AsyouhavealreadyheardfromErica,financiallyBRSCisresilientand

wehaveaverysoundfinancialbasisfromwhichtodevelopourbusinessplansfor

thefuture.Itwasn’talwaysthatwayandI’dliketopaytributetotheexceptionaljob

thatEricahasdoneasTreasurer.

AsMembershipSecretaryAnneKirkhamhasalsodonearemarkablejobinmanaging

arobustmembershiptotal,sowehavethemembershipandfinancialresourcesto

planBRSC’sdevelopmentfornextseasonandbeyond.Ifwedon’tlookafterour

membersthenwesimplywon’thaveaBRSCandAnneisanotherCommittee

Memberwhogetsthroughahugeamountoflargelyunseenbutabsolutely

invaluablework,sometimeswithverylittleinformationtogoon.WelldoneAnne!

Wewilllooktoinvestsomeoftheavailablefundstohelptoprovidebetter

membershipservices,possiblyinvestinginupdatedITprocesses,reviewingthe

meansbywhichwepublishanddistributetheNewsflashesandNewsletters–andat

somepointpurchasinganewmatchdaygazebo.

Thisyearwehadafullcommitteeof9,andtobehonestitwasjustenough.Every

memberofthecommitteehasaparticularroletoperforminadditiontoour

commoncommitteeresponsibilitiesandwe’regoingtobestretchedifwedon’tstay

atthatlevel.We’recurrently2shortandmayneedtoco-optadditionalmembersfor

specificrolesifneedbe.

Actionsfollowingthe2016AGM.

Atlastyear’sAGMIexplainedthatinmyviewwedidn’tneedtomakeanyradical

changestothewayinwhichBRSCoperatesandisdeveloping,andwe’veadheredto

thatviewthroughouttheyear,refiningourprocesses,makingimprovementsand

implementingafewnewideasalongtheway.Youcouldsaythatit’sbeenabout

“smallmargins....!”

• 20thAnniversary.Itwasour20thAnniversaryseasonandwemadethata

continuingthemethroughouttheyearwithspecialmembershipbadges,

memorabilia,publicationsandevents.Theshowpieceeventwasundoubtedly

the20thAnniversarysupperevent.Wewentoutonsomethingofalimbwith

thatoneandaskedmemberstodigouttheirfavouriteoldBathRugbyshirts

andwearthemonceagainwithpride–andwhataresponse!Itwasagreat

eveningandwereceivedtremendoussupportonceagainfromTarquin,

Todd,Tabs,StuHooperandGuyMerceraswellasJerryGuscott,DaveTrick

andMattPerry.

o Wealsotooktheopportunitytore-awardHonoraryLifememberships

topeoplewhohavegivenexceptionalservicetoBRSCovertheyears

andtoawardsomenewones.

o Whilstweweredoingthis,wefeltthatasaClubweprobablydon’t

makeenoughuseoftheHonoraryLifeMembershipsasweshould

andintheabsenceofanyexistingguidelines,wehavedrawnupa

processwherebyanyfullMemberofBRSCmaynominateacandidate

forconsiderationforawardofHonoraryLifeMembership.Itwill

remainaveryspecialaward,madeinrecognitionofoutstanding

servicetoBRSC,butweintendthatitwillbeamuchbetterused

processinthefuture.Fulldetailsarepublishedonallez-bath.

• ElectronicMailPlatform.Wementionedlastyeartheneedtomigratetoa

morerobustbulkmailplatform.We’vedoneitandwearenowusing

Mailchimpforthispurpose.Ericahasleadusthroughthechangeinherother

roleasWebmasterbutallmembersofthecommitteehavebeeninvolvedin

implementingit,especiallyintryingtocloseoutthelastremainingmissing

“optin”responseswhichareanintegralpartofthedataprotectionaspects

oftheuseofbulkmailfacilities.It’sbeenacontinuingproblemandwe’restill

workingonit.

• Wecompletedouractiononthepackswithinformationforpotential

discountpartnersaboutBRSCandasimilarinformationpackaboutBRSCfor

inclusioninthenewplayerswelcomepack.Theseareausefulresourceand

wewillkeepthemuptodate.

• TryoftheMonth.SallyKnighttookthisonthisyearanddevelopedtheidea

sothateachmonthoneofourmemberswhotookpartinthevotewouldget

topresentacertificatetothewinningtryscorer.Thishasbeenacomplex

taskattimesbutwellreceived–evenifSemesaRokoduguninowhasenough

certificatestopaperacompletewall!Welldone,Sally.Asyouknow,thiswas

somethingthatwethoughtwe’dtryaspartofoureffortstoengageasmany

ClubMembersaspossibleinourdecisionswiththewinningtryfromeach

monthasvotedforbyBRSCMembersbeingcarriedforwardtotheendof

yeartryoftheSeasonvote.Wecouldhavedonewithamorevoteseach

monthanditssomethingthatwe’llkeepunderreview.

• RelationshipwithBathRugby.We’vecontinuedtodevelopaconstructive

relationshipwithBathRugbyatalllevels.I’mdelightedthatwe’vebeenableto

continuetousetheRecforoureventsandampleasedwiththe:

• ContinuinginclusionofBRSCmembershipmaterialinSeasonTicket

renewalcommunications.

• “RingFencing”ofspacesforBRSCMembersatpopulareventssuchas

therecent“VisitFarleigh”.

• ContinuingcloseintegrationoftheBRSCmatchdaypresencewithinthe

overall“supportersvillage”.Ishouldsayatthispointthatwhilstour

matchdaylocationatWilliamsStreetgatecontinuestoworkforus,the

committeeisconsciousthatinordertoreachasmanypeopleaspossible

ideallywecoulddowithasatellitepresenceeitherontheoutfieldorat

theSportsCentreendoftheground.Thereareclearlystaffing

implicationsinthisbutwe’llhavealookatitagaininthecloseseason.

o AtthispointIshouldonceagainrecordanoteofthankstoKaren

GillandtheRecstaffforalltheirhelpinerectingthegazeboforus

andtakingitawaypostmatch.It’sagreathelp.

• Onthewiderrelationshipsfront,I’mpleasedwiththedevelopinglevelof

engagementandliaisononkeyissuesaffectingnotonlythematchday

experiencebutalsostrategicdevelopmentissues.Duringtheyearwe

havebeenregularlyaskedforandrepresentedthesupporters’

perspectiveonanumberofhighprofileissuessuchasreiteratingthe

Club’scommitmenttoSaturdayafternoonsasthepreferredtimefor

homegamesandthechoiceofFridayorSundayforthosegameswhich

can’tbeheldonaSaturday.Wearealsoengagedasrepresentativesofa

keystakeholdergroupinthecurrentconsultationsabouttheplansfor

ourlongoverduenewstadiumontheRec.

• Wehavebeenabletosuccessfullytakeupissuesonbehalfofindividual

memberswithBathRugby–somethingwhichharksbacktotheoriginal

constitutionwhenBRSCwasfounded20yearsago.

• I’mconvincedthatthispositive,proactiveengagementisverymuchin

theinterestsofBRSCandBathRugbyandwewilllooktodevelopingthis

mutuallybeneficialrelationshipgoingforward.

LookingforwardSowheredowegofromhere?Attheendofour20thAnniversary

yearIthinkwecanconfidentlypresenttoyouaClubwhichisfinanciallyrobustwith

aresilientmanagementstructureandadministrativeprocesses.Ibelievethatwe

delivergoodservicesforourMembersatanattractivecost.Ourprofileinrespectof

theinfluencethatweareabletoexertisashighasithaseverbeenduringthe10
