James’ Note
Pumpkin-Spiced LetterHi, everyone! October is here,
and with it are all the great eventsand activities dressed with fallcolors! Last month we held theVeterans’ Photo Shoot Ceremonythat commemorated the veteransin our very own building whohave served our country.Appreciation and gratitude weresentiments that were expressedsincerely during that event andwell after. From the soloistFrancesca Sola singing theNational Anthem, while beingjoined in by residents, to theBeverly Belles performing whilefood was being served, it was awell-deserved event in order tohonor our residents. Next in theorder of events that will definitelylight up our night is theexceptional “Dancing Under theStars” event. This event is going tobe filled with great music, goodfood and of course the
quintessential dance floor! Whileunder the stars, we hope thatinviting everyone to test out onlytheir best moves on the dancefloor will guarantee a great nightfull of enjoyment and goodmemories. I know that you can allhave a great time at this event.
There is nothing moreenjoyable than sharing goodmemories with the people whoyou know and love, and that isexactly what we want to keep ondoing. Stay tuned and look out forthe Dancing Under the Stars eventon Oct. 1! We’ll see you all there!
Lastly, I want to remindeveryone that the Club Room hasnew tables and chairs for cardgames, and that all residents arewelcomed to play. We hope youenjoy! See you soon! ~ James
Survey Time! This month you will be
receiving the Resident and FamilySatisfaction Survey in the mail. Please let us know how we aredoing by filling out the survey andmailing it back.
DRCS Health Hintsby Zara Khatchatrian
Did You Know ...Over 30% of cancer could be
prevented by avoiding tobacco, alcohol, maintaining a healthydiet and physical activity.
October is breast cancer month, but cancer is a disease of aging. Aswe age, the risk of getting certaintypes of cancer such as breast, prostate, pancreatic, lung, bladderand stomach cancer increases.Due to the increase in lifeexpectancy, cancer in older adultsis becoming increasinglycommon. According to theAmerican Cancer Society, 77% ofall cancers are diagnosed inpersons age 55 and older. Some ofthe challenges in older adults fortreatment of cancer are as follows:
• Less tolerance for certaincancer treatments, includingcapacity to respond
• Other medical diagnoses inaddition to the cancer
• Cognition• Functionality, such as the
ability to perform basicactivities of daily living
• Nutrition• Social environment (access
to transportation, family, caregivers, home safetyfinances, etc.).
Older adults with cancer havespecial needs and require expertcare. Geriatric Oncologists providecomprehensive cancer care topatients over 70. To determine themost appropriate treatment planfor patients, ComprehensiveGeriatric Assessment (CGA) hasbeen developed in order to ensurea detailed view of an older adult’soverall condition, focusing onfunctional status and quality oflife. Using the CGA allowsphysicians to create an individualtreatment plan tailoring care toeach patient. In addition, CGA canhelp your physician emphasizethat advanced age alone shouldnot prevent the use of effectivecancer treatment that mayimprove quality of life.
Smoking and CancerDecades of research have
consistently established thestrong association betweentobacco use and cancers ofmany sites. Many extensivebodies of evidence have led tothe estimation that cigarettesmoking causes 30% of allcancer deaths in the UnitedStates.
