Beauty is in the eye of the beholder

• What does this mean?

• What is the difference between inner beauty

and outer beauty?

• Which is more important?

• Which one do you have control over?

Ideal Beauty changes with time

So why?• Why is it that if we could we would change what we

have, rather than wanting a mermaid tail or teleportation?

• Why do we change our views on ourselves when we get older?

SOCIAL MEDIA• As we get older we become more aware of the

world.

• The average person is exposed to 5,000 ads per day

• Each week teen girls spend 31 hours watching TV.

• 10 hours online

• And 4 hours looking through magazines.

• Average teenage girl gets about 180 minutes of

media a day

• 80 % of girls say that models make them insecure

about themselves.

The media gives a warped sense of what beauty and

attractiveness are.

Toys companies �One study of Saturday morning toy commercials found that 50% of commercials aimed at girls spoke about physical attractiveness

bodybuilder in history.

The effects

Boys & Men• Boys are increasingly

interested in their appearance including their hair, clothes and physique.

• About 7% of 12th grade

males have used steroids in

order to become more

muscular.

Young Girls�The number one wish for girls ages 11 to 17 is to be

thinner.

�Girls as young as 5 have expressed fears of getting fat.

�80% of 10-year-old girls have dieted

8 out of 10 women are

unhappy with what they see in

the mirror.

• 80 % of girls are dissatisfied with their

bodies

• 42% of 1st-3rd grade girls want to be

thinner and that grows to be 80% by

their teen years.

• 97% of women today will say

something cruel about their bodies.

Male body image concerns

have increased from 15% to

52% since 1990

• 62% of guys are dissatisfied with their

bodies.

• Between 28% and 68% of normal-

weight males perceive themselves as

underweight and report a desire to

increase their muscle mass through

dieting and strength training.

Eating Disorders

Causes, Signs, Symptoms, & Consequences

• Over 8 million people suffer from an eating disorder

10% Boys and 90% Girls.

• Eating disorders have increased 400% since 1970.

• Over half of girls and boys use unhealthy weight control behaviors.

Causes• Low Self-esteem

• Fear of becoming fat

• Need to reduce stress and anxiety

• Inability to cope with typical problems

• Parents who are overly concerned with child’s

physical appearance

• Involvement in activities that emphasize thinness

Anorexia NervosaIrrational fear of becoming obese, and results in severe weight loss due to self-starvation.

SIGNS

• Withdrawal from

friends and family.

• Avoidance of meals

or situations where

food may be present.

• Preoccupation with

weight, body size and

shape.

• Obsessing over calorie

intake and calories

burned.

SYMPTOMS

• Underweight,

sunken appearance

to the face.

• Menstrual

irregularities.

• Fatigue, dizziness or

fainting.

Bulimia NervosaExtreme restrictive dieting and regular and repeated

binge eating, followed by self-induced vomiting.

SIGNS

• Hiding food

• Eating in secret

• Eating to the point

of discomfort or

pain

• Frequent bathroom

trips after eating

• Self-induced

vomiting

SYMPTOMS

• Abnormal bowel

functioning

• Damaged teeth and

gums

• Sores in the throat

and mouth

• Menstrual irregularities

• Irritation and

inflammation of the

esophagus.

Binge-Eating DisorderRegular and repeated binge-eating episodes; does not include purging or other behaviors.

SIGNS

• Avoidance of

mirrors

• Need for control.

• Use of food for

emotional comfort.

SYMPTOMS

• Serious weight gain.

• Leads to heart

disease, diabetes,

and some types of

cancer.

Consequences of Eating Disorders

Short-term

• Dehydration

• Blood pressure may

drop

• Lack of energy

• Tooth enamel wears

off

Long-term

• Heart becomes

damaged

• Harms the colon, liver,

and kidneys

• Diabetes

• Hypertension

• Death

So what can you do? • Recognize your daily food intake.

• Are you eating enough?

• If you feel the need to diet, eat a healthy meal at breakfast lunch and dinner.

• Do you know the best diet is healthy eating?

• Tell yourself confident compliments everyday.

• DON’T talk bad about yourself

• ACCEPT YOURSELF

Pay yourself an amazing compliment!

Shift your focus.

What is more important? Being beautiful on the outside, or the kind of person you are becoming on the inside?

Write a love letter to yourself on your mirror!

Evaluate what you’re feeding yourself!

Stand up for what you believe in!

Eat good every meal and go to bed early!

TREAT YOURSELF!

Do something good for someone

else!
