8.0 PORTS/PLACES OF REFUGE
It is agreed that, in reality, there are no “Ports
of Refuge” as it is unlikely that any
government agency of the countries through
whose water the tow will be transiting will give
“Safe Haven” in the event the tow has to
enter their waters. This is based on recent
events involving crippled or damaged tows
and vessels, however permission should be
granted for the convoy to seek shelter close
by. The ports and places listed below may be
considered Safe Havens should permissionto enter be granted by the government
involved:

From Paramaribo (Suriname) to Rio de Janeiro (Bras
12.0 CONTINGENCIES
12.1 Navigational Watches
Navigational watches on the tug will be
organized so that one of the master or deck
mates will be on watch at all times. This will
allow for immediate decisions to be made in
the event anything untoward happens.
12.0 CONTINGENCIAS
inconveniente.
12.2 Bad Weather, Tropical Storms
In the event of bad weather, the tow will
reduce speed or adjust course to what, in theopinion of the Tow Master in consultation with
the tug master, is a safe speed, bearing in
mind the effect the sea state will have on the
towing gear, and wave slap on the unit’s
transverse braces. The unit may have to
ballast to survival draft to put the transverse
braces underwater.
Speed to be adjusted to avoid “green water”
on deck to avoid slamming/pounding of thetow.
Tropical storms and hurricanes can and do
occur at any time during the season from
June to the end of October. Any active
tropical disturbances will be closely monitored
and early and positive action will be taken to
avoid them, even if it means going back in the
opposite direction. Sometimes the track of a
hurricane is unpredictable, so every attempt
will be made to avoid the eye of the hurricane
and/or the dangerous semi-circle where the
highest winds and greatest seas are
encountered.
12.2 Mal Tiempo, Tormentas Tropicales

12.3 Tow Line Failure
Should the towline fail, every attempt will be
made to reconnect using the main towline. Ifthis is not possible, a connection will be made
using the emergency towline.
In case of tandem towing. The master of the
tug whose towline is still intact should
remember the extra tension that will transfer
to his towline due to the failure of the first
towline. If necessary, he should reduce
speed/power and assess the situation fully
before increasing power again. It is likely he
will have to reduce power/speed to allow the
other tug a better chance of re-establishing
her towline.
12.4 Tug power Failure-Blackout
At the first sign of inclement weather the tug
should change over to auxiliary engines toprovide electrical power instead of shaft
generators, if fitted.
If there are two tugs, if the windward tug
suffers a power failure or blackout, the
leeward tug will reduce power to a minimum
and keep clear of the other tug and unit.
If there are two tugs, if the leeward tug suffers
a power failure or blackout, the windward tugwill turn the unit away from the other tug. The
windward tug will reduce power to a minimum
and keep clear of the other tug and unit.

Should any of the above happen in shallow
water, i.e. where the water depth is half the
tow wire length, then both tugs will inspect
their towlines for damage. This will entail
shortening up of the main tow wires and then
paying them out again.
vez.
12.5 Total Breakdown of One Tug
If there are two tug and should one of the
tugs suffer a total breakdown and it becomesapparent that a substitute tug is required
while en-route to the destination, the tow
contractor will do everything possible to
locate and hire a tug of similar specification to
the tug that failed.
During the tow, the tow contractor will be in
contact with brokers who will provide updates
on the location of suitable available tugs.
12.6 Damage to the Unit
Should the unit suffer damage due to weather
or from contacting another vessel or fixed
object, an inspection will be made by the
riding crew. The findings of the inspection will
be forwarded to the unit’s Operators who will
decide the best course of action.

12.7 Ports of Refuge
In reality, ports of refuge do not exist. It is
very doubtful that any port authority or localgovernment agency would allow entry to a
port with a “dead ship” in tow even if the unit
is undamaged. Refer to Section 8.0 of this
manual.
12.8 Unit Listing or Trimming,
Unexplained
Should the unit develop a list or trim without
an apparent reason, then it would be obvious
that there is an ingress or transfer of liquids
somewhere. The unit’s Captain along with
the unit Supervisor or Senior Ballast Control
Operator or should take immediate steps to
discover the reason and control it. The unit’s
Operations Manual has a section dealing with
damage control and its advices should be
considered.
consideradas.

and prior to arriving to final destination in Riode Janeiro (Brazil), the unit must flush its
ballast water tanks of residual ballast water
with clean sea water. This is to prevent the
translocation of harmful invasive aquatic
organisms and pathogens to Rio de Janeiro
(Brazil). The procedure to be followed is listed
in the unit’s Ballast Water Management
Manual.
Entries specifying the procedures followed,
including the geographic location, should be
made in the unit’s Official Log Book and on
the suggested Ballast Water Reporting Form
for possible inspection by the Port Authorities.
The tug boats should be advised before
commencing and after completion of these
activities so they will be aware that the unit’s
trim and list will be temporarily changing.
mar limpia. Para prevenir el desplazamiento de
organismos y patógenos acuáticos invasores a

C. Hydrodynamic Loads on the Hull
The total hydrodynamic hull resistance is
mainly due to friction. Moreover, a hull, having a blunt forward bow normal to the
flow, will experience higher normal resistance
than both port and starboard and bottom
surface.
The value of the hydrodynamic load on the
hull will be explained and developed in the
following order as per related formulas:

2. Skin Frictional Resistance
The components of the skin friction
resistance on port, starboard and bottomsurfaces have to be checked.
These resistance components are mainly
function of Reynolds Number.
considerados. Estos componentes de la
resistencia están dados principalmente en
función del número de Reynolds.
Rf =1/2 pSV 2Cf (Rn)

Accordingly, for turbulent flow, the frictional
resistance coefficient (Cf) is obtained from
the following formula:
Por consiguiente, para la turbulencia de flujo,
el coeficiente de resistencia friccional (Cf) es
obtenido de la siguiente fórmula:
Cf = 0.075/ [log(Rn)-2]2
Cf = 0.075/ [log(1.60 x10+8 )-2]2
Cf = 1.95 x10-3
Side and bottom surface areas are
determined from the following equation,
Las superficies laterales y del fondo son
determinadas por la siguiente ecuación:
S= 2(LWL*Draft)+Beam*LWL = 2(LWL*Calado)+Manga * LWL
S = 2(70.85 *2.34) +15.00 *70.85
S = 1,394.29m2
Hence, Puesto que,
(R f ) sides & bottom =(R f )lados y fondo =1/2 pSV 2Cf (Rn)
(R f )sides & bottom =(R f )lados y fondo =1/2*1025*1,394.29*(2.57)2*1.95x10-3
(R f )sides & bottom = (R f ) lados y fondo = 9.2 kNewtons
(R f )sides & bottom = (R f ) lados y fondo = 0.94 tons (2)
Therefore, the total hull resistance, in still
water at 5.00 knots towing speed, is the sum
of items calculated in 1 and 2. Hence,
1 y 2. Por lo tanto,
R hull = Normal Force +Skin friccional resistance =R casco = Fuerza Normal + Resistencia friccional casco

R hull = R casco = 24.27 + 0.94

8. Potencia Requerida
Effective Power = Potencia Efectiva = Rtotal * V
Substituting with Rtotal obtained in good
weather condition (25.21 tons) and V the
towing speed (5.00 knots), we get:
Substituyendo el Rtotal obtenido para buenas
condiciones atmosféricas (25.21 toneladas) y V
la velocidad de remolque (5.00 nudos),
conseguimos:
Effective Power = Potencia efectiva= 25.21* 9.81*2.57
Effective Power = Potencia efectiva= 636 kW / 853 HP
Allowance will be provided to account for the
propeller and mechanical losses in away toobtain the delivered or brake power needed as:
