Community quality-of-life – Decline in tourism, foot traffic,

business and housing development– Focus on “small” issues creates safer,

livable communities– Recreation areas become less

attractive

their behavior littering –

and some blame littering on a lack of ash receptacles

Cigarette Littering Misconceptions

Since it’s small, “it doesn’t matter”

Implementing the Keep America Beautiful Cigarette Litter Prevention Program on average reduces cigarette butt litter by half! Strategies:

– Review and support anti-litter laws– Build public awareness– Install ash receptacles at transition points– Encourage the use of portable ashtrays

How Can a Community Respond?

Gather a Task Force Assess needs and establish a budget Kick-off Cigarette Litter Prevention Program Evaluate impact by scanning (counting) Sustain and expand the program

How the Program Works

City centers or downtown areas Parks and recreation areas Beaches, lakefronts or waterways Roadways and highways Special events – occurring over a period of

time to allow for measurement
