The Benefits of aNetworked Learning Environment

Student Centered Learning

Access to High Quality Content

Instructor Efficiency

Anytime / Anywhere Access

• Too Much Information– Institutions have to SPAM their faculty and students – Too many online sources of information – most with unique passwords

• Too Little Communication– Services offered only in-person during normal business hours– Distance and commuter students disconnected from the community– Under-utilized mentors, advisors, and students communities

• Learning without Personalization– Online learning communities lack unique look and feel – Disciplines are unique but online learning is the same

• Commerce Mayhem– Many departments have no online purchasing of required academic

products and services– Departments have dozens of distinct insecure, complex and costly

solutions

Common Community Problems When Trying to Achieve a Networked Learning Environment

• Introduced in July 2000 as the Blackboard Portal System™• Name changed in October 2004 to reflect how software is being

used in the field to: – build learning communities

– provide information and services to those communities

• 350+ active clients have implemented the software:– Some use it in conjunction with other campus portals

– Some use it to as their main campus portal

How Blackboard Works with Clients

Client Objective• Minnetonka Public Schools wanted to

implement the Blackboard Community System to personalize their web site, thereby creating a powerful and dynamic communication link between the district and the community.

Blackboard Consulting Deliverables• Working with key stakeholders within the

school district, Blackboard Consulting developed a strategic framework for community building activities. This framework enabled Minnetonka to build and tailor its portal services to meet the ever changing needs of its user community.

Client Outcomes • Fully implemented Blackboard Community

System that will eventually replace their existing public website.

• Branded Blackboard® application that maintains the school’s identity and marketing strategy.

Closing Slide• Innovating Together in ‘05:
