Physical Fitness The ability to carry out daily tasks easily and

have enough reserve energy to respond to unexpected demands

Benefits of Physical Activity

Cardiovascular System

Strengthens heart muscle, allowing it to pump blood more efficiently

Continued…Respiratory System

Able to breathe larger amounts of air Muscle used in respiration don’t tire easily

Ex: Run farther with out being out of breath

Continued…Nervous System

Respond more quickly to stimuli Physical activity can improve reaction time

InactivityMore than 1 and 3 teens are not activeActivity declines in teen years

Sedentary Lifestyle A way of life that involves little activity

Ex: Watching T.V. Playing video games Playing on the computer

5 Components of Fitness

Cardiorespiratory Fitness Ability of the heart, lungs, blood vessels to

utilize and send fuel and oxygen to the body’s tissues during long periods of moderate-to vigorous activity

Muscular Strength Amount of force a muscle can exert

Example? Weight- liftingRope climbing

Muscular Endurance The ability of the muscles to perform physical

tasks over a period of time without becoming fatigued

Flexibility The ability to move a body part through a

range of motion

Example:Sit and Reach test

Body Composition The ratio of body fat to lean body muscle

Including:MuscleBoneWater Connective tissue
