What is Service Information System (SIS)

• For those not connected to the internet, SIS data is available either from a library of SIS DVDs or when loaded to a Network SIS Server (on a LAN). Data on DVDs is updated monthly.

• All three versions of SIS require an Internet Browser to display SIS information.

• Parts lists can be created in SIS and parts ordered directly via a connection to PartStore.

• Service literature is organized into a repair logic scenario of educating, problem solving and repair and can be found under the heading Service Repair Information in via Documentation (Document Structure).

• SIS covers information for all products from 1977 on.

• The information in SIS is equivalent to over 25,000 books. With over 2 million graphics and more than 1.5 million part numbers, SIS contains 44,000 parts and service documents.

• SIS is available on Local Area Networks (LAN) with Network SIS, the Internet (SIS Web), or with a DVD subscription.

• Data on SIS Web (internet version) is updated nightly, providing users with the most current data. Connection to the internet is required for this access.

SIS is the electronic service tool that dealers, customers and employees rely on for their parts and service information needs.

How to Start Using a Systems & Components (Product Identification)

Searches are divided into those requiring a Product Identification (product ID – prefix and serial number, sometimes referred to as serial number prefix – SNP) and those not requiring a Product ID.

• Product ID-required searches produce results that are more specific to a product.

• Prefix only-search results apply to the entire model with that prefix.

• No-Product ID searches permitted

Model prefixes can be found using the Select Equipment Model searchSome documents require users be given permission to access them. Those are marked with an **.

20Technical Information Access Solutions

Don’t know the serial number prefix?

If you don't know the Sales Model number, select an item from the

Product Families displayed in the left column

If you know the Sales Model number, type it in the fill-in box.

Use the (Find) link

21Technical Information Access Solutions

Getting Started with Searching

Many access methods used to search for technical information in SIS require a serial number or serial number prefix to be entered before beginning a search.

Search will …• identify the product system where part is located• allow adding the parts to the parts list from the parts id window• allow searching for keywords

Product ID required

Search by Keyword when: Part number is not knownPart name is known

25Technical Information Access Solutions

Systems & Components (Product Structure)

Select a link in the Systems & Components

column to start the lookup process

Product ID required

To view Parts Identification, it is necessary to drill down.

26Technical Information Access Solutions

You can uncheck the “Auto Filter” box and get the same results as below without having to go back to the main menu

Systems & Components (Product Structure)• The search used to find service information related to a

parts group or parts arrangement

• Can search serial number specific or by prefix only

Selecting one of the linked names will take the user to the parts identification screen.

32Technical Information Access Solutions

SMCS Code Search(Service Management Control System)

• Four digit code describing the components of products.

• Each digit of the code signifies a progressively narrower range of the product.

• For example, 1202 would be interpreted as:

– 1000 = engine, – 1200 = short block engine, – 1202 = crankshaft for the short

block engine. • A wildcard (*) can be used at the end of

the search criteria, 120* for example.

Product ID required

33Technical Information Access Solutions

SMCS Search

The SMCS Results Screen is similar to Product Structure.

Relevant Information Types are displayed in the middle column.

As an Information Type is selected, the Information available, column three, is displayed for that Information Type.
