Periodic CeO2(111) surface model

DFT-based Basin Hopping Monte Carlo (BH-DFT) global optimization approach for bimetallic clusters

Our BH-DFT global optimization tool [1,2] implemented for bimetallic PtmCun clusters supported on CeO2(111), starts by randomly placing a Pt atom across the xy slab plane, at an initial height (h) approximately 2.0 Å away from the CeO2(111) surface, see Figure S1. The next Pt atom is positioned according to the spherical coordinates notation: polar and azimuthal angles (θ,φ) are randomly generated according to a normal distribution between 0 and 2π; while the radial distance (r) value is randomly taken from a lower and upper Pt-Pt bond length range i.e. 1.50 Å to 2.50 Å. The next atom is placed at a new randomly generated (r,θ,φ) coordinates. Subsequent Pt atoms are placed by randomly selecting a previously generated Pt atom, which is now used as a starting point. Once all Pt atoms are randomly placed over the oxide CeO2(111) surface, the code proceeds to place the Cu atoms following a similar procedure as for the Pt ones. This leads to a “pseudo” spherical 3D-like initial PtmCun supported configuration, where metal atoms are placed at a distance no shorter than 2.0 Å. Flat (planar) structures can be enforced by constricting the z coordinate to a fixed distance (height) from the substrate. The same procedure applies to PtmCun gas-phase clusters.

Once the initial gas-phase or supported PtmCun cluster has been generated,

it undergoes a DFT relaxation to bring it to a local minimum (see Figure S1). For a converged structure, a move factor of 0.6 Å, multiplied by a normal random distribution between (-1, 1), is applied to the cluster xyz coordinates (move.py routine). This ensures that the random displacement (or “kick”) moves all PtmCun xyz coordinates in all random directions. This move highly disrupts the PtmCun cluster geometry, and it is the equivalent to escape from an attractive energy basin and to land in another area of the vast PES landscape at each Basin Hopping Monte Carlo (MC) step. In case the initial PtmCun structure does not electronically SCF converge, it is once more randomly generated and subjected to a DFT relaxation. After 10 BH-steps, an implemented atom-exchange routine (swap.py) allow us to search for low-energy permutations of atoms A and B (i.e. homotops). For example, for the case of a Pt3Cu2 cluster, the swap.py routine will select the 2 Cu atoms and exchange them for 2 randomly selected Pt atoms. This assure us to efficiently explore different chemical orderings and to cover wider bimetallic cluster PES areas than could be very difficult to reach using only random “kicks”.

Next, the MC criterion (e-ΔE/kT) is used in order to accept/reject relaxed

putative PtmCun minima configurations (both supported, and in the gas-phase). We use a fictitious temperature of 2500 K to increase the probability to accept higher energy PtmCun configurations. 100 MC steps are performed for both supported and gas-phase PtmCun clusters due to the computationally intensive BH-DFT searches involving DFT relaxations using an 81 atom (3x3) CeO2(111) surface. BH-DFT searches are initially performed with a low kinetic energy cut-offs of 20/180 Ry for both wave function and charge density to allow for a rapid PES scan of bimetallic

PtmCun supported clusters. After BH-DFT searches, energetically stable minima PtmCun configurations are further DFT relaxed using a higher wave function/charge density cut-off values (40/320 Ry).
