Expanding demand of coal and coal power

• New coal power in Asia(2014)

– East Asia 69.7GW – West Asia 41.3GW – Africa 4.1GW

• New award (2013) – 1199units in 59

countries – China & India 76% – U.S.A. 36 New units

INTRODUCTION

New coal power in Asia;200% increase of capacity that of 2000

Source: J-POWER, Coal-fired Power Generation– Indispensable Japan’s Base Power Source, J-POWER Group SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2012

Deficiency of Steam coal

• By 2030 world coal power plants need 5400MT of coal (4000kcal/kg)

– 2012 world coal production 7,831MT – China and India expand coal power plants (China 900 India 700MW coal power of near future plan) – World market is heavily depend on Indonesian coal expoert

• Utilization of low rank coal is imposing issue – CFBC is an optimum solution – Applicable to the coal of China, India, Indonesia, Turkey

DEVELOPMENT

Thermal coal export market growth and Indonesia is the major supplier

Clean Coal Center

World CFB market

• Chinese is leading the market

– China 46.5GW – India 8.5GW award

after year 2000 • Chinese model is

market standard in Asia

– 150MWe > 150 – 300MWe > 100 – 600MWe Super

Critical = 1 in China

CHALLENGE

600MWe Dong Fang Boiler

Large scale CFBC

• SC-CFB market has a little delay – 2000-2010 150MWe – 2010-? 300MWe – Waiting for report from Lagiza(Poland), Baima(China),

Samchuk(Korea) until 2015? – Korean engineering develops CFBC from 150MWe

• Must show special advantages toward Low rank coal against lignite boiler.

– High ash & high moisture low heating value – Troubles with cyclone, loop seal and erosion

CONCLUSION

Samchuk 500MWe x 4 SC-CFBC

CFBC distribution in Korea

• 1985~2000: about 17 boilers constructed • Industrial boiler to supply steam (200ton steam/h) • Original boilers were imported technology (Ahlstrom, Lurge,

ABB, ..)

• 2000~: about 10 new boilers are under construction ng

• 10 new boilers are contracted to build in next 5 years • Including 300MWe CFBC Power plant

Design considerations

• 60 steam ton/h requires 250ton/day RDF or 300ton/day Biomass

• Corrosive combustion environment need stern metal protection

• Heavy measure for environment control is required

10MWe CFBC boiler for RDF

• Combustor -Water wall – 4m x 4m x 24m - 30MWth

- Drum • Hot cyclone - ID 4m x 9m • Convection pass - Superheater 2 – 5MWth - Superheater 1 – 5MWth - Economizer – 8MWth - Air heater – 2MWth

* Tehnology Roadmap, IEA 2012

• Utilization of low rank coal is a major issue in thermal power sector

• To increase efficiency coal upgrading and large scale CFBC is necessary

– CFBC is a good solution for low rank coal – Market will be divided by 500MWe CFBC and 1000MWe

PC – Both CFBC and PC will go further to HSC
