Warm-Up

1. What are the two ways that Catholics view faith?

2. What is the difference between think, know and believe?

3. What do we mean when we say that faith is “reasonable”?

Five Characteristics of Faith

• “ Faith depends on what we hear and on what we accept” p34

• Faith is not blind, it is therefore:1. Reasonable

2. Certain

3. Personal

4. Free

5. Professed

Reasonable

• God made humans intelligent so we can ask questions and understand our faith

• God is the source of both faith and reason

• God cannot contradict his own creation

Certain

• We are certain about our faith because faith is based on God’s Word

• God cannot lie• However, we may not understand

everything right away, we (as Catholics) must work hard to learn our faith

Communal

• Faith happens in a community (the church)

• Even though we respond individually, we are still part of the larger faith community

Free

• God does not force us to believe against our will

• We choose to place our trust and faith in God

Professed

• Faith must be expressed through our actions and words– Examples:

• Our faith must be lived and experienced in order to exist

Homework

• Read pages 36-37• Answer these questions in your notebook:

– How do we (Catholics) make sure not to lose our faith?

– Is it possible for people of faith to have doubts? Explain

• Define agnostic and atheists

How do we (as Catholics) make sure not to lose our faith?

Is it possible for people of faith to have doubts? Explain.

Belief in God?

• Agnostic: people who cannot decide whether or not to believe in God.

• Do not believe that we can prove or know about God’s existence or answers to life’s questions

• Atheist: people who deny the existence of God, live their lives without God

• However they are not bad people-still strive for values
