6. Living things grow and develop
Characteristics of living things
Every living things composed of - one or - more cells. Thus, cells are the basic unit of living things.
A cell is a membrane-covered structure that contains all the materials necessary for life. Cells contain Nutrients DNA information many other things to help our body function in everyday activities.
Living things have Cells
Trillions of cells make up these organisms
Each of these organisms is made of only one cell
Living things have Cells
Cells perform specialized functions
For example:
1. Nerve cells transport signals
2. Muscle cells help in movement
Living things have Cells
All organisms have the ability to sense change in their environment and to respond to that change.
Please, expose some light on your friend’s eye
Stimulus (plural, stimuli) is a change that affects the activity of the organism
Stimuli can be: Light
Sound
Hunger
Living Things Sense and Respond to Change
A gentle touch causes a response in the plant
Living Things Sense and Respond to Change
Give more examples of stimuli
Living Things Sense and Respond to Change
Living Things Reproduce
The cells of all living things contain the molecule deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)
DNA controls the structure and function of cells.
Thus, DNA is a special molecule that is found in the cells of all living things. It provides instruction for making molecules called protein
Protein take part in almost all of the activities of an organism’s cell
Living Things Have DNA
Organisms use energy to carry out the activities of life.
Name four activities in living things that require energy.
Living Things Use Energy
All living things, whether they are made of one cell or many cells, grow during periods of their lives.
In a single-celled organism the cell gets larger and divides, making other organisms.
In organisms made of many cells the number of cells gets larger, and the organism gets bigger.
In addition to getting larger, living things may develop and change as they grow.
Living Things Grow and Develop
Over time, acorns develop into oak seedlings, which become oak trees.
Living Things Grow and Develop
What are four living and four nonliving things that you interact with or see
everyday?
