Engineers,engineeringtechnolo-gists,andarchitects,workingsidebyside,constituteoneofthemostpow-erfulagentsforchangeinoursociety.Newwaysarefoundtocontroltheenvironment,toutilizetheresourcesandforcesofnatureandtoincreaseproductivityofneededgoodsandser-vices,inshort,toimprovethequalityoflifeforall.

Mostoftheworkofengineers,tech-nologistsandarchitectsisconcernedwiththeconception,design,fabrication,maintenanceandtestingofdevices,processes,installations,andsystemsthatservehumanneeds.Thisworkprovidesampleopportunitytoexpresscreativity.Itrequiresanabilitytomakedecisions.

Theprofessionalsandsemi-profes-sionalswhowillbelargelyresponsiblefortheshapeoftheworldinthenextfewdecadesincludethosenowinhighereducation.Thepowertheywillexercisemakesanexcitingprospectandpres-entsasoberingresponsibility.Theeasyproblems are usually solved first and are now a part of history. Many difficult problemsremain.Theneedfortalentedandhighlytrainedpeopleisobvious;onewillbeembarkingonalifetimeofchallengeifheorshedecidestoprepareforacareerinengineering,engineeringtechnologyorarchitectureatOklahomaStateUniversity.

TheCollegeofEngineering,Archi-tectureandTechnology(CEAT)offersacompletespectrumofeducationalop-portunitiesdesignedtogivegraduatesthe capability and the flexibility to meet

processofseekingemployment.CEAT Residence Hall Program.CEATfloors have been established in the Kerr-DrummondresidencehallforbothmenandwomenCEATstudents.Studentson these floors have access to comput-ers, reference materials and test files. CEAT student staff live on the floors to provideprogrammingandmonitoring.Supplementalinstructionisprovidedforselectedmath,scienceandengi-neeringcourses.Specialactivitiesareplanned for the floors including events withfacultyandotherresourcepersons.Thisarrangementprovidesacommu-nitywherestudentscanstudytogether,haveaccesstotutoring,andserveasrolemodelsforotherstudents.Theatmosphere on these floors is conducive tostudy.

SpecialCollegeProgramsCooperative Education.TheCoop-erativeEducationprogramprovidesstu-dentsworkopportunitiesinasupervisedenvironmentthatassuresprofessionaldevelopment.Workperiodsalternatewithacademicstudies.Studentsentertheprogramattheendoftheirsoph-omoreyearandcompleteatleastonecalendaryearofsupervisedworkexpe-rienceintwoormoreworkperiodspriortograduation.

CEAT Scholars Program.Thispro-gramprovideseducationalexperiencesforaselectgroupofgiftedstudentsthatwilldeveloptheirtechnicalcompetence,worldview,professionalandpublicresponsibility,andleadershipskills.Ap-proximately25freshmenareselectedeachyearbyapplicationandinterviewtoenterthisfouryearprogram,basedondemonstratedacademicandleader-shippotential.Studentsparticipateinspeciallectures,tours,residencehallprograms,seminars,personaldevel-opmentactivities,facultymentoring,andsummertoursintheU.S.andabroad.

CEAT Research Scholars Program.Thisprogramprovidesopportunitiesforacceleratedintellectualdevelopmentofaselectgroupofstudents.Approxi-mately12newfreshmenstudentsareidentified from applications and inter-viewsannuallytoparticipateinthisfouryearprogram.Eachstudentisassignedtoaresearchfacultymentor,partici-patesinaresearchprogram,travelsto

oneormoremajorresearchfacilitiesandparticipatesinanationalprofes-sionalsocietymeeting.

Conoco/Phillips Engineering Scholars Program.TheConoco/PhillipsPetro-leumCompanysponsorsthisprogramtoincreasethenumberofoutstandinggraduatesinengineeringfromOklaho-maStateUniversity.Freshmanstudentsare identified for this program from applicationsandinterviewswithbothOklahomaStateUniversityfacultyandConoco/Phillipsemployees.Theprogramincludesanumberofexperiencestohelpstudentsdevelopprofessionally,buildleadershipandteamworkskills,assesspersonalcapabilities,achieveacademicexcellence,enhanceinter-personalrelationships,andincreasethestudent'sawarenessofcareerop-portunities.SpecialfeaturesincludetheassignmentofaConoco/Phillipsengi-neertomentoreachstudent,focusednationalandinternationaltripsandfinancial support.Women in Engineering, Architec-ture, and Technology (WEAT).Pro-gramsandresourcesareinplacetodevelopandsupportfemaleenrollmentintheCEAT.Peermentoringprogram,anactiveSocietyofWomenEngineers,summerprogramsinengineeringforhighschoolstudents,aconferenceforhighschoolandOSUstudents,andavigorousrecruitingeffortarealldirectedatrecruitmentandretentionofwomeninengineering,architectureandtech-nology.FemalefacultyandacoordinatorofWEATprogramsprovidesupporttothisprogram.Multicultural Engineering Program. Theseprogramsaredirectedatin-creasingthenumberofminoritygradu-atesfromtheCEAT,andincreasingtheunderstandingofdiverseculturesonthepartofallstudents.Includedareprogramsforrecruitmentandretentionof qualified minority students. Industrial supportprovidesscholarships,sum-meremployment,andsupplementalfundsforrecruitmentandretentionofminoritystudents.Culturalawarenessprogrammingisdesignedtoincreaseunderstandingofandsensitivitytothediversecultureswithwhichstudentswillhavetointeractintoday'sworld.

Employment Service. TheCEATCareer Services Office supports the UniversityCareerServicesandassistsstudentswithon-campusinterviewsandjobreferralsforsummercoopandpermanentemployment.Jobvacancylistings, reference files, and resource materialsonresumepreparation,inter-viewing,andjobsearchtechniques,areavailableforstudentreference.Orien-tationmeetingsandvariousworkshopsareprovidedtopreparestudentsforthe

should be completed and on file by February1precedingtheacademicyearforwhichthestudentexpectstoreceivethescholarshipinordertoassurefullconsideration.TheOSUFreshmanFeeWaiverandScholarshipformshouldbe submitted to the Office of Univer-sityScholarships.SincecopiesoftheseapplicationsareforwardedtoCEAT,aseparateapplicationisnotrequired.

Continuing studentsshouldsubmitscholarshipapplicationstotheDean'soffice of student services and the head oftheschoolinwhichtheyaremajoringpriortoApril1.InthismannertheywillalsobeconsideredforanydepartmentalscholarshipsforwhichtheymaybeeligibleaswellasforanyCEATschol-arship.Studentswhohavenotselectedamajorshouldsubmittheirapplicationsto the Dean's Office of Student Services.

ConcurrentEnrollmentIfastudentexpectstoapplycred-

itstowardadegreeatOSUthataretobeearnedatanotherinstitutionorthroughcorrespondenceorextension,whileenrolledinoneoftheprogramsoftheCollegeofEngineering,Architec-tureandTechnology,permissionmustbeobtainedinadvance.ItisthebeliefofthefacultyoftheCollegethatsuchenrollmentdetractsfromtheeduca-tionalprocessatthisinstitution,andcan be justified only in the most unusual circumstances.Normally,ifthematerialforwhichsuchpermissionissoughtisavailableatOSU,permissionwillnotbegranted,norwillretroactivepermissionbegrantedinanycircumstances.

HighSchoolPreparationBeginningengineeringstudentswho

havecompletedtwounitsofalgebraandoneeachinplanegeometryandtrigo-nometry/analysisinhighschoolshouldbepreparedtoenterattheexpectedlevelinmathematics.Inaddition,stu-dentswhocanshouldobtainhighschoolcreditinoneunitofgeneralchemis-try,oneunitofgeneralphysics,andacourseincalculus,ifavailable.

OklahomaStateUniversityofferscourseworkinalgebra,trigonometryandpreparatorychemistryforstudentswhowereunabletoobtainthisworkduringhighschool.However,suchcreditdoesnotcounttowardtheminimumnumber of semester hours specified for theB.S.degreeinengineering.

Generalchemistry,collegealgebraandtrigonometrycreditsmaycountto-wardB.S.degreesinengineeringtech-nology,andgeneralchemistrymaybeusedasanelectiveinarchitecture.

ineachoffourofthefollowingareas:(1)English,speechcommunicationandforeignlanguages(2000levelorhigher),(2)humanities,(3)mathemat-ics,statisticsandcomputerscience,(4)naturalscience,(5)socialscience,and(6)othercourseswithhonorscred-it.Threeofthe21credithoursmustbeinaspecialhonorsseminaroraninterdisciplinaryhonorscourse.A3.50orhighercumulativegrade-pointaver-ageisrequiredatthetimeoftheaward.CompletionoftheGeneralHonorsAward is noted on the student's official transcript.

TheCollegeHonorsAwardisearnedbycompletingaminimumof12honorscredithoursinupper-divisioncourseswithgradesof"A"or"B."The12credithoursmustincludeaseniorhonorsthe-sisorseniorhonorsprojectwithapublicpresentationoftheresults.A3.50orhighercumulativegrade-pointaverageisrequiredatthetimeoftheaward.CompletionoftheCollegeHonorsAwardis noted on the student's official tran-script.

Studentswhoearnaminimumof39honorscredithourswithatleasta3.50OSUandcumulativeGPAandhavereceivedboththeGeneralHonorsAwardandtheCollegeHonorsAwardwillbegrantedthebachelor'sdegreewithhonors. This recognition is reflected on the student's official transcript and on a specialhonorsdiploma.

ScholarshipsSeveralscholarshipsarefunded

throughprivatedonations,alumnigifts,andindustries,andvaryinamountsfrom$400toover$5,000peryear.

Thesescholarshipsareavailableforfreshmanthroughseniorstudents,andareawardedprimarilyonthebasisofacademicachievementandleadershippotential.However,duringtheselec-tionprocessconsiderationmaybegivento financial need. Freshman students shouldnormallyhaveanACTcompositescoreof29orhigherandbeinthetop10percentoftheirhighschoolgradu-atingclasstobecompetitiveforCEATscholarships.

EachschoolordepartmentwithintheCollegenormallyhasscholarshipfundsavailable.TheseareadministeredthroughthatschoolordepartmentratherthanthroughtheCollege'sschol-arshipcommittee.However,aseparateapplicationformisnotrequired.

Nonresident transfer studentsad-mittedtoOSUmayenterdirectlytopreprofessionalschooliftheyappeartohavetheabilitytomakesatisfactoryprogresstowardanengineeringdegreeasindicatedbythefollowing:

1.AnoverallGPAofatleast2.70,and

2.AGPAofatleast2.50overallmathematics,physicalscience,engi-neeringscienceandengineeringcours-es,and

3.AGPAofatleast2.00(inatleast12hoursifafull-timestudent)inthemostrecentsemestercompleted.

Forthesepurposes,allGPAsarecal-culatedusingonlythelastgradeinanyrepeatedcourse.

StudentsnotdirectlyadmissibletopreprofessionalschoolbutthosewhomeetOSUrequirementsforadmissionmaybeadmittedtoUniversityAcademicServicesforoneortwosemestersinor-der to fully evaluate their qualifications foradmissiontopre-engineering.Aftergradesarereceivedeachsemester,suchstudentsmaybeevaluatedand,ifqualified, will be admitted to pre-engi-neering.

InternationalstudentapplicationsmustbereceivedbyJune15,Novem-ber1andApril1forthefall,springandsummerterms,respectively,tobeconsideredforadmissiontopre-engineering.

Admission to the Professional Schools. Ineachschoolofengineer-ingthelower-divisioncourseworkisdevotedtopreparingthestudentforprofessionalschool.

Tobeadmittedtooneoftheprofes-sionalschoolsofengineering,thestu-dentmusthave:

1.Completedaminimumof60credithoursinanaccreditedinstitutionofhigherlearning.

thepre-engineeringprogram,consistingofthecourseworknormallytakenthefirst two years of an engineering cur-riculum.Nearthecompletionofthepre-engineeringcoursework,thestudentisconsideredforadmissiontooneoftheprofessionalschoolsoftheCollegetocontinueintheupper-divisionprogram.Uponmeetingadmissionstandardsthestudentthenpursuesacurriculumlead-ingtotheB.S.degreeorgraduateedu-cationinhisorherdiscipline.

Preprofessional School. Thecontentofthepre-engineeringprogramissimi-larformostengineeringspecialities,andincludescourseworkdevotedtomathe-maticsthroughcalculusanddifferentialequations,communicationskills,generalchemistry,generalphysics,engineer-ingsciences,socialsciences,andhu-manities.

Professional School.Uponformaladmissiontotheprofessionalschoolofhisorherchoice,thestudentproceedsthroughthejuniorandsenioryearsofthe degree program, fulfilling "Major Requirements"aslistedonthedegreerequirementssheetsinthepublicationUndergraduateProgramsandRequire-mentsthatisconsideredacompaniondocumenttothisCatalog.Uponcomple-tionofalldegreerequirements,thestu-dentisawardedtheBachelorofSciencedegree.

Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy.Thesedegreeprogramsareavailableineachengineeringschooltoprepareengineersforcareersinad-vancedengineering,researchanddevel-opment.Theprogramsaredescribedundereachschool'sheadings,andinthe"GraduateCollege"sectionoftheCatalog.

GeneralEducationRequirements

OpportunitiestosatisfyGeneralEducationrequirementswithrequiredcoursesintheschoolsofengineeringinclude:

English.Studentsinsomeprogramsarerequiredtocompleteacourseintechnicalreportwriting.Thus,studentsmaking an "A" or "B" in the first English compositioncourse(ENGL1113),neednottakeENGL1213,andmaytakeENGL3323,tomeetboththeGeneralEducationrequirementforEnglishandspecific program requirements.

Humanities and Social Science.En-gineeringstudentsmustcompleteaminimumof18credithourstosatisfythisrequirement.BytakingAmericanhistoryandpoliticalscience,sixad-ditionalhoursdesignatedassocialandbehavioralsciences,andsixhoursdes-ignatedashumanities,the18hourswillmeettheUniversity'srequirementsintheseareas.HumanitiesandSocialSci-encecoursesmustbeselectedwiththeassistanceofaCEATadviserinordertoassurecompliancewithaccreditationre-quirementsandtheUniversity'srequire-mentforanInternationalDimension.

2.DemonstratedanacceptablelevelofcompetenceinsubjectmaterialcomparabletothatcoveredinPre-en-gineering,i.e.,GeneralEducationandCommonPre-engineering.Suchdemon-strationmaybebycompletionofcourseworkorbyexaminationwithnotmorethan half the requirements satisfied by examination.

3.Beenformallyacceptedbyapro-fessionalschool.

Anacceptablelevelofcompetenceforadmissiontoaprofessionalschoolmaybedemonstratedby:

a.Completionofthepreprofessionalschoolrequirementsasdesignatedonthe flow chart corresponding to the student'smatriculationdateandmajor,withanoverallgrade-pointaverageof2.30orhigherinthesecourses.Stu-dents may be deficient in no more than nineofthesehours,andmusthavecompletedtherequiredsequencesincalculus,generalphysics,generalchem-istry,Englishcomposition,andatleasttwoengineeringsciencecourses.

b.Finalgradesof"C"orbetterinallcoursessubmittedtomeettheUniver-sity'sEnglishcompositionrequirement.

c.CompletionatOSUofatleast12credithoursofcoursesrequiredforthedegree,withagrade-pointaver-ageof2.30orhigherinthesecourses.ThismustincludeatleastninehoursoftechnicalsubjectswithaGPAof2.50orhigher.

d.Achievementofanoverallgrade-pointaverageof2.50orhigherintherequiredmathematics,physics,chemistry,engineeringscienceandengineeringcoursescompletedpriortoadmissiontoaprofessionalschoolandfinal grades of "C" or better in each of thesecourses.

TheSchoolofMechanicalandAero-spaceEngineeringcurrentlyrequiresa2.70technicalGPA(basicscienceandengineeringcoursesincludingphysics,biology,geology,engineering,engineer-ingscienceandMAEcoursesondegreeplan);a2.70mathGPA(includesallrequiredmathandstatisticscoursesondegreeplan);anda2.60overallGPA.

Inaddition,ifthenumberofqual-ified professional school applicants to a givenprofessionalschoolexceedsthenumberthatcanbeprovidedaqualityprogramwiththeresourcesavailable,

thenumberadmittedeachyeartothatprofessionalschoolwillbelimited.Inthatevent,priorityforadmissionwillbegiventopre-engineeringstudentson a best qualified basis as determined bythegrade-pointaverageinrelevantcoursestakenandcompletedatOSUandprofessionalpotential.Thisprac-ticewillpreservethehighstandardsdemandedofaqualityeducationalexperiencesoughtbystudentsandisnecessarysothatOSUgraduateswillcontinuetobehighlyregarded.

Studentsmayenrollinnomorethanninehoursofupper-divisionma-jorrequirementspriortoadmissiontoprofessionalschoolunlesstheysecurepermissionfromtheheadoftheschool.However,enrollmentpreferenceinsuchcourseswillbegiventostudentsad-mittedtotheprofessionalschool.

ClassPlacementTheselectionoftheinitialchemistry

andmathematicscoursesforanen-teringstudentintheCollegeofEngi-neering,ArchitectureandTechnologyisdeterminedby:(1)thecredithoursofandgradesinmathematicsandchem-istrycoursespreviouslycomplete,(2)placementtestscores,and(3)ACTtestscores.Whenappropriate,studentswithastrongbackgroundcanobtainacademiccreditbyadvancedstandingexaminationorbyCollegeLevelExami-nationProgram(CLEP)tests.

Theprimaryfocusofthearchitec-turalengineeringprogramatOSUisthesafeandeconomicaldesignofstruc-turalsystemsusedinbuildings.Thesestructuralsystemsmustwithstandthevariousforcesofnaturesuchasgravity,windsandearthquakes,aswellastheforcesofman.Thesesystemsrequireaworkingknowledgeofthemechanicsofthosematerialscommonlyusedforbuildingstructuressuchassteel,timberandreinforcedconcrete.

Thestudyofarchitecturalengineeringisanintegratedmixofliberalstudies,designandtechnicaleducation.Archi-tecturalengineersneedtobeabletoconceptualizeaestheticissuesandde-signcomplextechnicalsystems.

Inthepreprofessionalportionofthearchitecturalengineeringprogram(ap-proximatelytwoyearsofstudy),thefocus is on the underlying scientific and mathematicalprinciplesofengineeringandthebasicdesignprinciplesofarchi-tecturesupplementedbyappropriategeneraleducationcoursesinEnglish,socialsciencesandhumanities.Thesecoursesallowstudentstoassimilateabeginningknowledgebaseinarchi-tectureandengineeringalongwithabroaderliberalbasedcomponenttotheireducation.Studentswhodemon-strate proficiency in this portion of the program by meeting a specific set of admissioncriteriaareeligibleforad-missiontotheprofessionalprograminarchitecturalengineering.

Accreditation.TheSchoolofArchi-tectureofferstwoseparatelyaccred-itedprofessionaldegreeprograms.TheBachelorofArchitecturedegree,B.Arch.,isaccreditedbytheNAAB.TheBachelorofArchitecturalEngineeringdegree,B.Arch.E.,isaccreditedbytheAccreditationBoardforEngineeringandTechnol-ogy(ABET)asanengineeringprogram.Bothprogramsrequireamin-imum of five years of study to complete.

IntheUnitedStates,moststateregistrationboardsrequireadegreefromanaccreditedprofessionaldegreeprogramasaprerequisiteforlicensure.TheNationalArchitecturalAccreditingBoard(NAAB),whichisthesoleagencyauthorizedtoaccreditU.S.professionaldegreeprogramsinarchitecture,rec-ognizesthreetypesofdegrees:theBachelorofArchitecture,theMasterofArchitecture,andtheDoctorofArchi-tecture.Aprogrammaybegrantedasix-year,three-year,ortwo-yeartermofaccreditation,dependingontheex-tentofitsconformancewithestablishededucationalstandards.

Master'sdegreeprogramsmaycon-sistofapreprofessionalundergraduatedegreeandaprofessionalgraduatede-gree,which,whenearnedsequentially,compriseanaccreditedprofessionaleducation.However,thepreprofessionaldegreeisnot,byitself,recognizedasanaccrediteddegree.

TheOSUSchoolofArchitectureof-fers an accredited, five-year, Bachelor ofArchitecturedegreeandaone-yearpost-professionalMasterofArchitecturedegree.

ArchitectureArchitectureisthecomplexsynthesis

ofcreativelysolvingproblemsinvolvingbothartandsciencethroughthedis-ciplinedorchestrationofimagemak-ing,activityorganization,technologicalapplications,legalconstraints,andbudgetaryparameterswhichtogetherexpressculture,enhancequalityoflifeandcontributetotheenvironment.

Educationinarchitectureconsistsofcampus-orientedclassroomandstudiocourses,aswellasoff-campusstudies.Itisconductedinanintellectualclimatewhichstimulatesinquiry,introducesprinciplesandvalues,andteachesthedisciplinesnecessarytoworkincollabo-rationwithothers.Thegoalofthepro-gramistheeducationoffutureleaderswithinthearchitectureprofession.

Thedesignstudioisthecenterof

theSchool'seducationalprogram.Itisthesettingwherestudentsandfacultyworkmostcloselytogether,andwhereallspecializedstudyandknowledgecomestogetherandissynthesizedindesign.TherecordofOSUstudents'achievementsinthedesignstudiosisevidencedbythesuccessinnationalandinternationalarchitecturaldesigncompetitions.Inthelast15years,over100OSUstudentshavewonorplacedinnationalandinternationalcompeti-tions.Inadditiontoastudent'sdesignstudioeducation,heorsheisrequiredtocompletesequentialcoursesinarchi-tecturalhistory/theory,technology,andmanagementthatworkincorrelationwiththedesignstudiosequence.

TheprogramhaslongbeenknownasoneofthestrongestprofessionalprogramsintheUnitedStates.OSUgraduatesareconsistentlyofferedem-ploymentopportunitiesinmanyofthebest architectural offices in Oklahoma andthroughouttheUnitedStates.TheprogramisfullyaccreditedbytheNa-tionalArchitecturalAccreditationBoard.

ArchitecturalEngineering

Architecturalengineeringisaprofes-sionthatcombinestheartandscienceknownasarchitecturewithadetailedbackgroundinfundamentalandappliedengineeringprinciples.Initsbroadestsense,itinvolvesthecreativeapplica-tionofscienceandtechnologytothedesignofstructuresmeantforhumanoccupancy.Architecturalengineeringdiffersfromarchitectureinitsfocusuponthedesignofelements,systemsandproceduresforbuildings,ratherthanthedesignofbuildingsthemselves.

Eacharchitecturalengineeringcoursebuildsupontheprecedingarchitec-turalengineeringcoursestodevelopinthestudenttheabilitytoidentifyandsolvemeaningfularchitecturalengi-neeringproblems.Thecourseworkisspecifically sequenced and interrelated toprovidedesignexperienceateachlevel,leadingtoprogressivelymorecomplex,open-endedproblems.(SeethepublicationUndergraduate Programs and Requirements.)Thiscourseworkincludessensitizingstudentstosocially-relatedtechnicalproblemsandtheirresponsibilitiesasengineeringprofes-sionalstobehaveethicallyandprotectpublicsafety.Theprogramculminatesina fifth year course in which the students integrateanalysis,synthesisandotherabilitiestheyhavedevelopedthrough-outtheearlierportionsoftheirstudyintoacapstoneexperience.

Foreign Study.TheSchoolofArchi-tectureiscommittedtopreparingitsgraduatesfortheprofessionaloppor-tunitiespresentedbytheexpandingglobaleconomy.Aspartofthisprepa-ration,theSchooloffersanine-weekSummerForeignStudyProgrambasedinVersailles,France.Thisprogramhasbeendesignedtosupplementthere-quiredcurriculum.Studentsstudy,inanorganizedanddisciplinedfashion,majorexamplesofmodernandhistoricEuropeanarchitectureincludingurbanissues.Bothanalyticandartisticsketch-ingskillsarethemaintoolsdevelopedinthiscourseofstudy.

ExperiencehasshownthattheSum-mer Foreign Program significantly in-creasesastudent'slevelofmaturity,independentthinking,andculturalandsocial awareness of others. Knowing the valuesandaccomplishmentsofotherculturesnotonlydeepensandbroadensknowledgeandabilities,italsomakesastudentabetterandmoreresponsiblecitizenofhisorherowncountry.

Fiveweeksofthenine-weekprogramarespentinFranceunderthedirectsu-pervisionandinstructionoffacultyfromOSU.TheremainderofthenineweeksisspentinindependenttravelstudyinothercountriesinwesternandcentralEurope.HousingwhileinVersaillesisprovidedinFrenchfamilyhomes,en-richingtheculturalexperienceofeachstudent.

Faculty and Facilities.InkeepingwiththeprofessionalorientationoftheSchool,thefacultyhaveextensiveexpe-rienceassuccessfulpracticingarchitectsandarchitecturalengineers,aswellasoutstandingscholasticrecords.

TheSchoolofArchitectureishousedintheArchitectureBuilding,theoriginalUniversityGymnasiumandArmory,builtin1918.Thisstructurewasextensivelyremodeledin1976andcontainsallstudios,laboratories,galleriesandof-fices of the School. Specialized facilities includetheCunninghamLibrary,con-tainingalloftheUniversity'sholdingsonarchitectureandafully-equippedComputer-assistedDesignLaboratory.ThefacultyandstudentsareespeciallyproudoftheArchitectureBuilding,foritservesasanexampleofinnovativearchitecturaldesignandtheadaptivereuseofanimportantbuilding.

Student Work.Projectssubmittedforregularclassassignmentsmaybere-tainedbytheSchool.Allprojectsnotretainedwillbeavailabletothestudent.

nology(FPST)curriculumprovidesprep-arationforassessingandreducingthelosspotentialintheindustrialsettingwith respect to fire, safety, industrial hygiene,andhazardousmaterialacci-dents. With respect to fire, reducing the losspotentialmightinvolvesettingde-signcriteriawithaspecialemphasisonlife safety or fire resistivity or specifying automaticdetectionorextinguishingsystems.Whenconsideringsafety,re-ducingaccidentsmayrequirespecialprotectiveequipmentorclothing,ortheredesignofmachineryorprocesses.Reducinglossescausedbyenviron-mentalproblemsmayrequiresamplingairforcontaminants,suchasasbestosortoxicchemicals,ormonitoringnoiselevels,andthedevelopmentofproce-durestoaddresspracticalapproachestocompliancewithstateandfederalregulations.Addressingtheproblemsofhandlinganddisposingofhazardouschemicals,suchasspillcontrol,isoften

The fire protection and safety engineeringtechnologyprogramhasexistedatOklahomaStateUniversitysince1937.Thedemandbybusinessandindustryforlosscontrolspecialistshasresultedintheevolutionofthepro-gramintoonethatnowplacesemphasisupon industrial fire protection, safety, andoccupationalhealth.TheprogramconcludeswiththeBachelorofSciencein Engineering Technology degree in fire protectionandsafety.

Program Objectives.TheFPSTpro-grampreparesgraduatesforcareersinlosscontrol.Thelosscontrolprofessionissegmentedintothreemajorareas:loss from fire, loss from physical ac-cident,andlossfromenvironmentalexposure.

Professional School.UponformaladmissiontoFPSTprofessionalschool,thestudentproceedsthroughthejuniorandsenioryearsofthedegreeprogram,fulfilling “Major Requirements” as listed onthedegreerequirementssheetsinthepublicationUndergraduate Pro-grams and Requirementsthatiscon-sideredacompaniondocumenttothisCatalog.Uponcompletionofalldegreerequirements,thestudentisawardedtheBachelorofSciencedegreeinEngi-neeringTechnology,FireProtectionandSafetyTechnology.

Admission to the Professional School. InFireProtectionandSafetyTechnology(FPST),thelower-divisioncourseworkisdevotedtopreparingthestudentforprofessionalschool.Tobeadmittedtotheprofessionalschool,thestudentmusthave:

1.Completedaminimumof60credithoursinanaccreditedinstitutionofhigherlearning.

2. Final grades of “C” or better in allcoursessubmittedtomeettheUniversity’sEnglishcompositionrequirement.

3.CompletionatOSUofatleast12credithoursofcoursesrequiredforthedegree,withagrade-pointaverageof2.30orhigherinthesecourses.ThismustincludeatleastninehoursoftechnicalsubjectswithaGPAof2.50orhigher.

4.Achievementofanoverallgradepointaverageof2.50orhigherintherequiredmathematics,physics,chemistry,engineeringscienceandengineeringtechnologycoursescompletedpriortoadmissiontoprofessional school and final grades of “C” or better in each of these courses.
