Compered to other countries,in Italy the “vernacular”(the beginning of the
italian language) was formed later. For a long time the Latin language was
spoken and written language. After a slow start, as you can notice in non-
literary documents,after 1000 we have the first “vernacular” text the “Cantico
delle Creature” by st. Francesco d’Assisi.
After a literature with a strong religious character, starting from 1400, “Humanism”,
develops an art closer to the human aspects of reality.
1600 is a time of transition and labour:the certainties of the Renaissance man fall,
new geographical and cultural horizons expand human knowledge and create art
related to wonder.
L’ILLUMINISMO e IL SETTECENTO
The “Illuminismo” in Italy is a cultural and philosophical movement which
started in the second half of the 17° century, characterized by the discussion
of ethical and political issues. The “Illuminismo” proposes a valorization of
human mind.
The “romantic” born as a reaction of “Illuminismo: the feeling and fantasy are
the most important characteristics of artistic expression.
It is a certain period marked by the beginning of the political Unity of Italy.It also
tries to understand the new political and social giving contribution to the
reaction of a unified national consciousness.
It’s a literary movement which is opposed to a rationalistic vision of the
world with the preference of a symbolic and spiritual aspect.
1900 is age of contradictions,in which the same poet becomes the spokesman.
Poetry and Prose were innovate: poetry becomes more concise and essential
and the prose with psychological and fragmented novels confuses the reader
a little bit.
After the WW2, the writers feel civilly engaged in the Italian reconstruction
after the political phenomenom of Fascism. The novels of these authors are
realistic and describe social,political and daily aspects.
