Fred Huntzicker and William J. Eilert operated the Fresno Brewing Co. after Eilert’s father’s death in 1902.

FG01 Combination tool marked WIZARD KNIFE SHARPENER. Includes original card (torn). Corkscrew, bottle opener, and knife sharpener. Made by Williamson Co., Newark, N. J. $55

FG02 Combination tool marked NEW ERA KNIFE SHARPENER. This is similar to the Wizard but it has the addition of a glass cutter on the end. Marked PAT. PEND. Made by Williamson Co., Newark, N. J. $55

FG03 German 1930 Registered Design No. 1,111,176 by Richard Wielputz. Marked PATHOS PRIVAT. Combination corkscrew, bottle opener and knife sharpener. $85

FG09 German 1928 Registered Design 1,049,529 by Solinger Metallwaren Fabrik GmBH. Also patented in France in 1931 (no. 702,997). Advertising “Chevron Jeunesse & Sante.” $79

FG11 Combination corkscrew and bottle cap lifter. It has a very substantial backspring to keep the worm in place when folded out. $35

FG12 German 1928 Registered Design 1,049,529 by Solinger Metallwaren Fabrik GmBH. Also patented in France in 1931 (no. 702,997). Marked HOFFRITZ NY GERMANY. $69

FG16 In 1924, Harry L. Vaughan of Chicago, Illinois, was granted Patent No. 1,490,149 for his invention of the over-the-top type Opener. This example combined with a corkscrew advertises “Sexton’s Drug Store, 240 Water St., Augusta, Maine.” $69

FG19 Charles Willets used a piece sheet metal to form a U-shape handle so that the tip of the worm is protected when it is folded up for storage. He also included a crown cap lifter on the neckstand. The sheet metal had ample space for advertising beer and other products. Willetts was granted United Kingdom Patent Number 177,694 for his invention on March 18, 1921. $115

FG22 Combination corkscrew and opener produced by John Watts of Sheffield, England (so marked) with advertising “Creese’s for Something Good.” The body is made of nickel plated stamped steel with a cantilever spring cut in the spine which is the backspring for the wire helix. $45

FG24 A 1930s combination corkscrew and bottle cap lifter with interesting advertising “Consign your Cattle and Sheep to Rice Brothers, Sioux City Stock Yards” [Iowa]. $45

FG26 A really cheaply made waiter’s friend corkscrew. $10

FG30 A post-WWII version of Kaspar Kirchner’s German Registered Design No. 1,021,815 granted January 17, 1928 for a pocket corkscrew and crown cork opener. Marked DREKO on one side and the price 1,95 on the other. $29

FG31 Combination corkscrew, bottle cap lifter, and can opener marked as shown. $25

Carl Hollweg registered his design for a collapsing corkscrew on November 7, 1901 in Germany (No. 171,941). He had not patented the corkscrew in Germany but it had already been patented in England (1890) and in the U. S. A. and France (1891). The collapsing pocket corkscrew protected the pocket from the worm. Hinges in four places allow the user to fully close the corkscrew for storage or fully open to use the case as the handle. Several examples are shown on the following pages.
