DES Working Group Aim

• To advise the FDSRCS and establish frameworks for the education, assessment and development of dentists with enhanced skills which are consistent with the demands of NHS commissioners, current career pathways and which facilitate national recognition of DES.

DES working Group Terms of Reference

Working group recommendations

• Priorities

– Initial focus should be on Oral Surgery and Paediatric dentistry

• Architecture

– FDSRCS (Eng) should utilize existing structures and expertise, recognising that there may need to be interim structures

Working group recommendations

• Standards

– Standards for training and education for DES should be the responsibility of the existing Specialty Advisory Committees (SAC)

• Education and Training Opportunities

– FDSRCS (Eng) should work with other providers to support educational and training opportunities for those seeking DES status and CPD for established DES

Working group recommendations

• Assessment and Awards

– FDSRCS (Eng) should establish an educationally robust method of assessment for those wishing to be considered as a DES but which facilitates access to a nationally recognised award, complimentary to those currently in existence
