Cervical cancer can be treated if detected early. Regular pap smears can help detect the presence of pre-cancerous cells, which can be treated before they turn into cervical cancer. If left undetected, these pre-cancerous cells can develop into cervical cancer and the cancer can spread to other parts of the body. Symptoms are often not noticed until after the cancer has spread and it’s more difficult to treat.

Annual pelvic examinations, including a pap smear, should start when a woman becomes sexually active or by age 18, and continue annually thereafter.
