Pros

Diipo can help to engage the students using the technology that they are currently using and are use to.

It is a great way to get students to collaborate together in groups and get group discussions going where everyone has an opportunity to respond.

Your classroom can be privacy protected. You can set it up so nobody but you or your students have access to the on-line classroom unless you want them to.

Private information given will only be shared with your consent and your email will not be shared with third parties.

The teacher can choose the options they want enabled.

It is Canadian (British Columbia) so the information is ultimately stored in Canada so adheres to Canadian privacy laws. Found out later it was an American Site

Very easy to register for the service for both the teacher and the students.

You can talk to students privately or in a group and they can do the same.

Your students can collaborate with other classes in your school.

Has a feature called Educational Community which allows the teacher to interact with other educators and get ideas on how to use this service to its greatest potential. It is also a great way to share resources with other teachers. It is a lot easier than Twitter with regards to uploading and downloading files.

Has a very informative help section which helps you get started. Has links to documents such as “Getting Started by Creating Your First Class”, “How I Share Materials, Files, Links with my Students” and How to Communicate with my class on Dippo”. It also has many video tutorials to help you set-up your classroom.

Cons

Could have advertisements and links to third party groups.

How Can You Engage Your Learners?

It is one of the few places that we can use for private online collaboration among students. Students can be set-up in groups and work on questions, assignments and projects by posting their responses.

Teachers can lead online discussions and students can respond to each other in various ways, ways that they are very familiar with and comfortable using.

It is easy to post links, videos, pictures, etc. to Diipo so it is a very media-rich environment which helps engage the students.

The lines of communication are always open between students and between the teacher and the students. If a student has a question or need for clarification on a task, they can instantly tweet the teacher.

This tool also has a blogging feature that would offer the opportunity for students to improve their writing skills and practice keeping journals.
