EGREAT GATSBY
NEW YEAR’S EVE CELEBRATION AT W SCOTTSDALE
Hotel recreates the glamorous ‘Roaring Twenties’ novel for the
2013 celebration W Scottsdale invites guests to “Great Gatsby,” a rip-roaring party inspired by F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic 1920’s novel for its 2013 New Year’s Eve celebration on Monday, December 31. Doors will swing open starting at 8:00 p.m. and welcome guests to experience the luxurious party in true “Gatsby” style. W Scottsdale will transform into the prosperous and glamorous era known as the “roaring- twenties.” Guests of this highly anticipated event are welcome to mix and mingle all night long at the ‘Gatsby Mansion’ where they will enjoy cocktails, live entertainment and musical performances. Much like Jay Gatsby’s extravagant parties, the entertainment will be endless! Atop W Scottsdale’s WET deck rooftop, guests can take in a show as pole and slack wire acrobats, in addition to professional ice skaters who will perform a custom 1920’s mash-up on the CHILL ice rink, amaze them. A fun photo opportunity with a vintage 1920’s style car that resembles the signature yellow car in Great Gatsby will be hosted in front of SWEAT for guests to take snapshots with as take-home mementos from the evening. The downstairs lobby’s evening entertainment will feature jazz/pop recording artist, Scott Keo and a 7-piece band that will keep W Scottsdale hopping all night long. Guests can then head upstairs where resident DJ Soloman will be sure to have the WET deck jumping with his beats until the end of the night. While the downstairs will be reminiscent of a lively, southern, Gatsby-style party showing off a stairway lined with embellished feather plumes, the upstairs FOCUS room will resemble the infamous
speakeasies of the era with wooden whiskey barrels, chandeliers, and a vintage bar that will be showcased as a focal point of the room. Champagne glasses will be flowing to the brim and ready to toast as the countdown to the New Year commences. At the stroke of midnight the iconic “W” mirror ball will drop, followed by astonishing firework display that will light up Old Town Scottsdale’s sky. This New Year’s Eve, W Scottsdale will offer a complete Great Gatsby hotel package in addition to individual tickets to the event. New Year’s Eve package starts at $529 per night. This package includes:• 2 tickets to the GREAT GATSBY

a: Oh, yeah. He was texting me, “Babe, I need this treatment ... I need that treatment ... I need this doctor.” And I was like, “OK. No problem. I got it.”

Give the Gift of Entertainment!
Local Scottsdale first time Director, Johnny West, has spent the last 3 years filming the notoriously private Joe Jackson in Mr. Jackson’s first and only documentary currently titled The Architect. At 85 years old, Mr. Jackson finally agreed to tell all and he holds nothing back in this emotionally charged film. “I think people are going to be both shocked and inspired by this behind the curtain look at the Jackson family” says Johnny West. “Joe, other family members and some of Michael’s closest friends claim Michael was murdered - and Joe tells who he believes is behind his death.” The director also says he interviewed people who have never been able or willing to talk on camera while Michael was alive. These people were closest to the King of Pop and shed some light about Michael’s true genius, which reached far beyond music, and also discuss the reasons behind his eccentric behavior.
AZW Editor Jeff Haugen had a chance to sit down with Mr. West to dig deeper into the rare and truly unique project soon to be released:
AZW: This is your first feature film as a director, why did you choose this project?
I was going to direct a comedy my brother Jason Chambers and I wrote called Pimpin on Empty that we planned to do with National Lampoons before the stock manipulation scandal broke and the project got turned around. So a year later a couple of my friends bought the life story rights to Mr. Jackson based on his private manuscript, and I asked if I could do his exclusive documentary. One of my friends was against me directing it. I guess he thought I was completely incompetent but my other friend Erik Anderson saw some of my work and backed me. It took about 4 months
to put the deal and funding together. The rest is history.
AZW: What was your biggest challenge making this film?
Getting the very private Joe Jackson to open up.
AZW: How did you accomplish that?
By emphasizing the fact that Mr. Jackson’s story was an important part of music history and to make sure the history books got it right - he needed to put it on the record before it was too late. Good thing we did because last week he suffered a stroke.
AZW: What will the audience be most surprised to learn in this film?
Actually alot. One thing that comes to mind is Michael Jackson’s obsession with magic. He paid a famous magician a million dollars
to incorporate magic into Neverland Ranch. Michael wanted to be able to disappear and reappear from any room in Neverland Ranch.
AZW: Is Joe as unpleasant as he comes across in the media?
I would be lying if I said I wasn’t intimidated when I first met Mr. Jackson which hasn’t changed; However I actually found him to be quite affable most of the time… that is as long as I didn’t keep him waiting. He does not like wasting time or people who are late; one of the traits he attributes to the success of Michael and the Jackson 5.
AZW: Where are you are going to premiere the film?
I really wanted to submit it to Sundance and hope for an invitation but I just finished the film (2 month past the deadline). We did a private screening for a few critics

in L.A. and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. I think the film has a solid chance to premiere at Cannes or Berlin but there are a lot of great films out there competing for the same thing. The Jackson family would love to see it premiere at Cannes. Either way I definitely would love to have it play locally at the Phoenix International Film Festival so all my friends and family can come.
AZW: Does the film have distribution yet?
We are trying to decide if we want to do a private screening in LA for distributors or roll the dice and wait until after the World Premiere at a major film festival. I will have to leave that one up to my friends Tony Romano and David Harbour who invested in the project to decide.
AZW: What was the most interesting part of making this documentary?
I would have to say visiting all of the Jackson family estates. Seeing
all the tunnels and trap doors at Neverland Ranch was the coolest part. Conversely, standing in the room where Michael Jackson died was the creepiest and most surreal part, which also doubles as the hardest part since it took me 2 years of research, phone calls and endless emails before I finally got access to the Carolwood house.
AZW: What is your next project?
I am about to start filming for my next documentary called My 1st 90 Days which I plan to release at the 90th day of President Obama’s 2nd term in office. I pose the question “What would you do in your first 90 days as President of the United States if you could pass any laws to fix America?” and see what people say from teenagers to senior citizens.
AZW: How can people keep up with you and your projects?
They can follow the project at www.jacksondocumentary.com or myself at @productions11 on twitter or westjohnny on facebook.

‘Best Movies of 2012’
This year, AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists were challenged to employ Twitter rules when writing their top movies lists. In other words, they were asked to share their thoughts about each of the movies on their respective lists using 140 characters or less. The following are their Tweets, preceded by brief introductions that reflect their general thoughts about cinema in 2012. AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine is pleased to announce Film Columnists Stan Robinson, Randy Montgomery, and Joseph J. Airdo’s ‘Best Movies of 2012’.
“The smaller independent films are the real gems of filmmaking because we as cast and crew pour our hearts and souls into the project and magical filmmaking happens. As a
22-year veteran of working in the film industry, 2012’s release of movies this year has a milieu of genres, covering a wide range of taste in cinema with budgets both big and small.
“As we learned in film school, cinema is the art form with that window to ideas that inform, illuminate, enlighten, inspire, motivate, entertain, and guide us in expanding horizons with ‘food for thought’ both externally and internally as we live life. Here are my favorites for the movies of 2012” - Stan Robinson

Randy Montgomery’s ‘Top Ten Films of the
Year’
Film critics complain about seeing awful movies all the time. One would think choosing the ten best films of the year would be easy for us “complainers.” Surprisingly, it’s not that simple. My original list contained nearly two-dozen titles. Narrowing that list was actually harder than sitting through ‘The Three Stooges.’ Many of the following films are small “indies” that left a big impact.
There are a few blockbusters on the list as well, but these are films that somehow moved me, left an impression or had me on the edge of my seat. Enjoy! - Randy Montgomery
End of Watch – Haunting, disturbing and well-acted, this look at the L.A.P.D.’s most dangerous precinct that will stick with you well after watching it.
Zero Dark Thirty – Dramatic and intense, a look at the hunt for Bin Laden introducing the players involved, with a noteworthy
performance by Jessica Chastain. The Beasts of the Southern Wild – An indie film with a gigantic story and a big performance from a young newcomer that will win over your heart and imagination. Les Misérables – Watching the performances by Hathaway, Jackman and Crowe alone would be one reason to see this epic musical adaptation. Argo – Ben Affleck directs an intricate piece of classified recent history that few knew occurred, all thanks to the power of Hollywood. Arbitrage – Richard Gere is a Wall Street big wig that gets wrapped up in dilemma that unfolds as viewers glue
their attention to the screen. The Impossible – One of the decade’s greatest tragedies sets the backdrop for the year’s most endearing story. Starring Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts. Skyfall – Bond. James Bond. 007 is back for the best and most action-packed installments since Sean Connery. Plus, a blonde Javier Bardem.
Compliance – Fast food and strip-searched employees. So absurd, it is hard to believe this actually happened and more than once. Cringe your way through. Smashed – Two alcoholics struggle through life in an urban Los Angeles neighborhood. Featuring two understated performances worth the recognition.

SJoseph J. Airdo’s
‘Favorite Flicks of 2012’
As has been the case every other year, few films on my top ten list for 2012 would be considered “best” by most critics’ qualifications. Instead, it is filled with flicks that affected me in some way, shape or form - be it moving me on an exceptionally emotional level, touching me in an intensely spiritual fashion or simply succeeding in spreading a smile across my face. Granted, you are unlikely to find many of these movies nominated for Academy Awards. But each one of them achieved something even more spectacular - they had a memorable and lasting impact on my year. – Joseph J. Airdo
10. “The Impossible”Rewards those who brave the uncomfortable waters with a heightened hope that tides can turn even in the seemingly grimmest of circumstances.
9. “Robot and Frank”One of the year’s most human movies, using visionary ideas about technology to not only stimulate your brain but also touch your heart.
8. “Frankenweenie”An unconventional, creative and cordial celebration of cinema that is as rare as lightning striking twice in precisely the same place.
7. “Mother’s Day”Seriously shocking, spectacularly suspenseful and utterly unsettling from its creative vision of violence to its constant sense of danger.
6. “Detention”With a pace that could outrun a cheetah and an attention span the size of a fairy fly, makes Mars look like your next-door neighbor’s house.
5. “Killer Joe”Dark, demented, distressing and guaranteed to turn you off fried chicken for the foreseeable future with a menacing Matthew McConaughey.
4. “Compliance”Deeply disturbing, leaving you both emotionally and intellectually shaken. If this is not the stuff of nightmares, then nothing is.
3. “Safety Not Guaranteed”The epitome of a small movie with a big idea and an even bigger heart, giving viewers a very valid reason to believe in fairy tales.
2. “Life of Pi”Takes viewers on a majestic journey that is breathtakingly beautiful, extremely exotic and incredibly immersive. It may forever change you.
1. “Jeff, Who Lives at Home”Goofy, hopeful, honest, intimate, whimsical, funny, poignant, sweet, smart and spiritual. This movie makes you feel fantastic to be alive.

Best of BrunchThe holidays may have passed, but the season for celebrating in sunny Arizona has only begun. How lucky are we, that while our east coast cousins shiver, warm Valley winters call for a toast to the sunshine. In keeping with this spirit, I can think of no better way to lose an entire day than lingering slowly over the kind of mid-day meal where cocktails instead coffee are encouraged.

‘Tis the Season to Sparkle Marlene P. Baumann
I am thrilled to write about a fantastic Italian sparkling wine that is brand new to the Arizona market. Ca’ del Bosco is its name and a reputation for excellence is its game! The winery
is located in the Franciacorta wine region of northern Italy, just an hour northeast of Milan. Franciacorta is Italy’s leading production area for sparkling wines. Most of the Prosecco you find comes from the Franciacorta wine zone. Prosecco is indeed lovely and very popular especially this time of the year. But once you try the sparkling wines of Ca’ del Bosco, you will fall in love with their elegance and balance. They produce many– the one I wish to focus on is the Ca’ del Bosco Prestige Brut Non-Vintage.
First a little about the winery – its founder, Maurizio Zanella, is quite an ambassador for the wine zone of Franciacorta. In the 1970’s, he saw the quality that could be produced from the grapes of Franciacorta. On a visit to France as a young man, he learned the French method for making quality Champagne. The influence on him was deep – in fact, one of his first winemakers came from the Champagne house of Dom Perignon. Maurizio set out to put Italian sparkling wines on the map and in the top league. The name, Ca’ del Bosco, means a house in the woods and that is just what it was for Maurizio’s parents, who purchased it as a country home to get away from Milan on the weekends. The little house on a hill, surrounded by chestnut woods had a few acres of vines, from which Maurizio built the winery to what it is today – one of the most respected and highly-acclaimed wineries in all of Italy. The Ca’ del Bosco Prestige Brut can currently be found in several restaurants in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area; with an expected increase in popularity, its availability will soon be more wide-spread. The quality of the wine and attractive price point make it irresistible. It is at once fresh, elegant, delicate, and full of fruit on the palate. Made in the traditional method as used in Champagne, the sparkling wine Ca’del Bosco Prestige Brut is a blend of mainly Chardonnay grapes with smaller quantities of Pinot Noir and Pinot Bianco. Some of the vines are 135 years old and the winemaker also blends in 20% of his top reserve to make the Ca’ del Bosco Prestige Brut even more desirable. The wine has been awarded 90 points by Wine Spectator. The packaging is unmistakable – a beautiful clear bottle, enabling you to see the excellent color of the wine itself, topped off with an attractive gold foil capsule and gold label, and finally all wrapped in a vibrant orange cellophane. So perfect for holiday giving and celebrating! Even if you don’t normally turn to champagne or sparkling wines—this one should not be missed– it is a winner. I can’t wait to share a bottle with friends!

No Pain ChampagneBy: Alison Bailin Batz
New Year’s Eve, the one time of year that our wine glasses sparkle as brightly as our winter wardrobes. But how does one choose the best champagne or sparkling wine to enjoy during this, the fizziest of holiday seasons?
“Simply put, one must decide how much of a brut he/she is ordering to determine the best bottle for his/her taste buds,” said Douglas Wooster, market manager of Moet Hennessey in Arizona.
According to Wooster, when it comes to champagne and sparkling wines, the term “brut” refers to how much sugar is contained in the bottle. The least sweet bottles, generally the most popular among males, are general those labeled as “brut,” “extra brut,” and “brut zero.” For sweeter options, look for the terms “extra dry,” “dulce,” “sec” or “semi-sec.”

Wine Pairing IV: Pizza & Such
By: Nathan Brugnone, @NathanBrugnone
Junk food and wine: eat, drink, and be merry. (Merry Christmas, by the
way!)
If your household is anything like mine this time of year, then you’re either cooking meals large enough to feed roving bands of javelina, or you’re concocting meals with the slyest do-nothingness. So, let’s pair some wines with them.
Pizza: Without researching this, I believe this dish originates from somewhere in Italy. And, apropos to the region, lighter pizzas go so well with a Sangiovese. And for a meat-lovers’ deep-dish, a Super Tuscan will be more than adequate, adding the
backbone of Cabernet Sauvignon to the aforementioned grape.
Bacon-Wrapped Water Chestnuts: My mom makes these every Christmas Eve with a sweet and sour sauce to boot. After years of testing, we’ve come to a family agreement that nothing comes close to Champagne. Crispy pork fat, sweetness, and bubbles: Stairway to Heaven.
Swiss, Cottage Cheese, and Red Onion Cheese Ball: Gewürztraminer. It is a flavor overload.
Cheetos: That’s right. There’s even a matriarchal winery down in Sonoita, Arizona Hops and Vines, whose owners claim that their wines go well with sushi, pork, and even Cheetos… Yea, Cheetos and wine! What’s up now?!

MAXIMIZE THE GIFT OF GIVING THIS HOLIDAY SEASONAs we are in the midst of the holiday season, a season for giving and receiving, a season for reflection and planning, my thoughts turn
to…what else, beer. Anyway, many of you out there will be fortunate enough to receive the gift of beer this year. Perhaps some of you will receive individual, difficult to find bottles, like beers from Russian River, or maybe some of the fine offerings from Cigar City or perhaps the Smokestack Series from Boulevard Brewing. Others may even score the highly coveted Westvleteren beers. Still others will get beer of the month gifts. But there is a saying about giving fish and teaching how to fish…now I don’t really know what that means, but I think it also applies to beer. If you give a man a beer, he will be happy for the moment but if you teach him how to homebrew, then he will waste many Saturdays making beer. That means that many of you are probably staring at a brand new
homebrew kit right now. Incidentally, if you didn’t get a homebrew kit, you should go out and buy yourself one.
What are you going to do with it…that’s truly the question? Here are some key tips pulled from various sources, all from those who should know, such as the people that publish Zymurgy magazine, the American Homebrewers Association
1. Keep it Simple
The vast majority of new homebrewers start with extract brewing. The first tip is to take your brew pot off the heat when you add the malt extract, whether its syrup or dried extract. It can take a few minutes to get the extract in and
leaving the heat on will more than likely scorch the bottom of your pot. You will naturally get caramelization on your brew pot but you don’t want a burnt sugar taste in your finished beer.
2. Boilovers
It will happen to you at some point, but try to prevent it anyway by being careful when bringing the wort to the boil. They are not fun to clean up and dangerous too. Eliminate boilovers by keeping a spray bottle with water to hand so when the wort looks like it could boil over you can spray it and hopefully settle everything back down. Don’t be in a rush and moderate the heat to bring the wort to the boil slowly.

THE FLAVOR BOMB IS HERE!!!! BY “KING” JAMES SWANN
Hello again beer lovers, today let’s chat about the Flavor Bomb. A new bomber bottle widget from Grand Canyon Brewing here in Williams, Arizona that works to insure the beer will get better and change with age. Don’t you just love science? I must admit after seeing this thing in action I’m pretty impressed. A really great idea and a first for craft beer in Arizona or for that matter, the United States!
Their first release is the Shaggy Bock, a classic German bock style sitting at about 6.75% ABV. and containing malts smoked over Shaggy Juniper Bark. That sounds interesting enough until the flavor bomb inside the bottle is loaded with toasted oak. Now you have an age-able brew that will continue to change over time as the oak continuously imparts more and more character.
The Flavor Bomb device itself is a rather interesting little piece of technology. About three inches long, perforated and attached with two small arms inside the bottle just below the neck to insure contact with the liquid. Current plans are to fill the widget with fresh hops, roasted coffee beans and different varieties of toasted wood, although anything you might imagine can be put inside the apparatus to add appeal to the beer and change its essence over time. When you think about it the possibilities are endless.
Now here is the REAL KICKER. There is a rumor that after undergoing full development and usage by the brewery, these widgets will be made available to home brewers! Although just speculation for now, this writer has it on good authority that we will see them on sale in the market sometime in the New Year.
And On That Bomb Shell It’s Time To Say Good Bye & Happy Holidays!

3. Get proper hop utilization by boiling properly
It may seem like a long time but when a recipe or book says boil for 90 minutes or 60 minutes then do it. One of the reasons you are boiling for this length of time is to achieve the correct bitterness.
4. Keep Things Sterile
This is job one and with good reason. All you need to worry about is keeping everything sterilized that comes into contact with the wort or beer after the boil. Having to pour a whole batch of home brew down the drain because it’s infected is the last thing you want to do when you put so much time and effort into your beer.
5. Control your fermentation temperature correctly
Your yeast will almost always state an optimum fermentation temperature range. Try to stick to this as much as possible. The temperature of the wort during fermentation will not only affect the viability and behavior of the yeast but also the taste and flavor of the finished beer. Big swings in temperature are a bad idea, for example if the room gets cold at night then warm during the day. A simple way to regulate temperature if your house temperature varies a lot is to keep the fermenter in a small space like a cupboard because it doesn’t take a lot of energy to keep a smaller area at fermentation temperature. Get a simple adhesive thermometer and stick it on your fermenter.
6. Boil Full Size Batches
If you start out brewing part of a beer then diluting to the desired final volume then try to switch to full batch boiling as soon as possible. Switching to full boils as soon as can get a big enough brew kettle will be the best thing you can do, both in terms of the taste of your home brew and being able to brew far more different styles.
7. Practice Your Siphoning
Siphoning is a skill that takes time to master. You need to know how to siphon properly before you start siphoning your beer. If you let lots
of air into the siphon and splash the beer around you can end up with oxidized beer. It might seem a trivial thing to do but practicingbeforehand without your hard crafted home brew is the best way.
8. Make a Yeast Starter
Yeast starters are particularly good for decreasing the lag time (the time it takes between pitching the yeast and fermentation). Having your wort sitting in the fermenter for a long time before fermentation starts increasing the risks of infection. A starter will mean this period is shortened and also mean healthier yeast.
9. Experiment
There are so many different varieties of hops, malts and even fruits, vegetables and spices available to the home brewer. Use this diversity to the full and be creative actively seek out recipes that have vanilla in if you like vanilla. If you like a particular beer that uses a certain variety of hop substitute that hop into your beers instead of using something else. You can only improve as a home brewer by knowing your ingredients and testing them out.
10. Try Different Yeasts.
Find the fridge in the home brew shop with all the differentvarieties of yeast. Pick up an information sheet that described the characteristics enjoy the possibilities. Take a look at the White Labs and Wyeast websites and you can see how many strains of yeast are available, each one will bring something different to the beer and improve your brewing.
11. Split Batches or Brew Double
Experiment and have fun. One way you can quickly build up an understanding of different ingredients is to split a brew in half and pitch 2 different yeasts in each one. You can even split batches and hop them differently and compare results between different hop varieties. Understanding what each ingredient brings to the table helps you design better beers.

12. Read. Read. Read.
This point is vitally important. Go out and get books like Designing
Great Beers by Ray Daniels, or The Complete Joy of Homebrewing by Charlie Papazian, go on the forums and listen to the Brewing podcasts. You can pick something up and learn more about home brewing every day. People are always developing new techniques all the time and being able to learn these things will make you brew better beers.
13. Have Patience
Brewing takes time. Not only the length of time to brew and ferment your wort but also to carbonate and mature your home brew. If you have ever opened a bottle of homebrew too early you will get the importance of this. Brewing big beers like Barley Wines and Old Ales need patience. The only thing you can do to stop this habit is to brew more, that way you have always got something to be drinking.

14. Develop Your Own Recipes
Making a beer to a recipe is great, brewing a beer you have spent time working in and researching is awesome. To begin with you might want to take a recipe and make modifications, put something you like in there. Make a recipe from scratch because it’s quite possible nobody has done anything like it before.
15. Go off Style
This is another one about experimentation. Just because a style dictates that a Mild has to have a maximum of 25 IBU’s and top out at 1.038 OG. Make a super Mild, don’t be constrained by styles, you are a home brewer and one of the things
that makes home brewing great is you can do what you want. Push the limits.
Finally, seek out others that can help you with your new hobby. Find a homebrew club. The largest in the country is located right here in the Phoenix Area. Contact the Arizona Society of Homebrewers (ASH) at www. Azhomebrewers.org and get a membership. They offer advice, competitions and social events, all designed to maximize your enjoyment of brewing your own beer. If you live on the west side of Phoenix, check out Brewmeisters Anonymous at brewarizona.org.
