ABOUT THE OFSC

The Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) isa non-profit corporation representing 248 volunteerclubs who operate and maintain Ontario’s 41,290 kmgroomed trail network, including the border-to-borderTrans Ontario Provincial (TOP) Trail System. Throughlocal clubs, the OFSC has 167,400 family members.

TTRRAAIILL PPEERRMMIITTSSIt is the law in Ontario for recreationalsleds* using OFSC Prescribed SnowmobileTrails to have and display a validSnowmobile Trail Permit. Fines for failureto comply range from a minimum of $200to a maximum of $1,000.

*exemptions or partial exemptions apply for specific user groups.

Each OFSC Trail Permit sold applies to an individual sled, regardless of who is riding it. That’s why the trail permit you buyis only valid when affixed to your sled in the prescribed front andcentre, visible location. It’s not valid in your pocket: a trail warden has the right to require your trail permit to be stuck ontoyour sled immediately.

When you purchase an OFSC Trail Permit, 88% of your moneygoes back onto the snow to pay for Provincial Trail Programs, clubtrail operations, grooming, signage, bridges and equipment. Thebalance goes to the OFSC to pay for the other provincial programs such as safety, environment and communications, aswell as, the administration costs of running the world’s largestsnowmobiling association. Both your local club and the OFSC arenon-profit organizations with mandate to put your permit moneyto work on the trails you ride. Because this permit money goesfirst and foremost to the selling clubs, it is in your own best interest to ensure that you buy from the local club whose trailsyou ride the most.

All OFSC trails in Ontario operate under the user-pay systemwhereby each sled must display a valid trail permit to beallowed on the trail. The annual sale of trail permits generatesfunds required by OFSC clubs for grooming operations,equipment maintenance and repair, equipment purchase, newtrail development, trail upgrade and improvement, operatorwages, gas, oil, insurance, OFSC operations, and other ongoing costs incurred to keep groomed snowmobile trailsopen and safe all winter long so you can have great riding whenever you want it, anywhere in the province. The OFSCtrail permit is Ontario’s best winter recreational value!

THE USER-PAY TRAILPERMIT SYSTEM

Be a Safe RiderBeing a Safe Rider and ridingresponsibly is a personal choice

you make every time you operate a snowmobile. To makesnowmobiling a safe recreational activity and reduce yourown risk of injury or death, here are some of the safe ridingbehaviours that will help you make smart choices:

• review and understand all safety materials provided with your sled

• stay on the marked OFSC trail• keep to the right side of the trial• slow down on all corners and when cresting hills• avoid consuming alcohol while riding• wear an approved snowmobile helmet• always ride with a buddy• stop before crossing roads and railway tracks• use the approved snowmobile hand signals• wear reflective clothing at night• carry an emergency survival kit

Remember, snowmobiling can be a high risk activity if youdo not ride safely and responsibly. The legal provincial speedlimits for snowmobiles are: 50 km/hr on trial; 20 km/hr onhighways with automobile speed limits of 50 km/hr or less;and 50 km/hr on highways with automobile speed limits ofmore than 50 km/hr.

also be in violation of the Trespass toProperty Act and subject to charges andfines. Police forces, conservation officers, and OFSC wardens regularlypatrol Ontario trails.
