Through local clubs, the OFSC has 167,400 family members. TRAIL PERMITS It is the law in Ontario for recreational sleds* using OFSC Prescribed Snowmobile Trails to have and display a valid Snowmobile Trail Permit. Fines for failure to comply range from a minimum of $200 to a maximum of $1,000. *exemptions or partial exemptions apply for specific user groups. Each OFSC Trail Permit sold applies to an individual sled, regardless of who is riding it. That’s why the trail permit you buy is only valid when affixed to your sled in the prescribed front and centre, visible location. It’s not valid in your pocket: a trail warden has the right to require your trail permit to be stuck onto your sled immediately. When you purchase an OFSC Trail Permit, 88% of your money goes back onto the snow to pay for Provincial Trail Programs, club trail operations, grooming, signage, bridges and equipment. The balance goes to the OFSC to pay for the other provincial programs such as safety, environment and communications, as well as, the administration costs of running the world’s largest snowmobiling association. Both your local club and the OFSC are non-profit organizations with mandate to put your permit money to work on the trails you ride. Because this permit money goes first and foremost to the selling clubs, it is in your own best interest to ensure that you buy from the local club whose trails you ride the most. All OFSC trails in Ontario operate under the user-pay system whereby each sled must display a valid trail permit to be allowed on the trail. The annual sale of trail permits generates funds required by OFSC clubs for grooming operations, equipment maintenance and repair, equipment purchase, new trail development, trail upgrade and improvement, operator wages, gas, oil, insurance, OFSC operations, and other ongoing costs incurred to keep groomed snowmobile trails open and safe all winter long so you can have great riding whenever you want it, anywhere in the province. The OFSC trail permit is Ontario’s best winter recreational value! THE USER-PAY TRAIL PERMIT SYSTEM Be a Safe Rider Being a Safe Rider and riding responsibly is a personal choice you make every time you operate a snowmobile. To make snowmobiling a safe recreational activity and reduce your own risk of injury or death, here are some of the safe riding behaviours that will help you make smart choices: review and understand all safety materials provided with your sled • stay on the marked OFSC trail • keep to the right side of the trial • slow down on all corners and when cresting hills • avoid consuming alcohol while riding • wear an approved snowmobile helmet • always ride with a buddy • stop before crossing roads and railway tracks • use the approved snowmobile hand signals • wear reflective clothing at night • carry an emergency survival kit Remember, snowmobiling can be a high risk activity if you do not ride safely and responsibly. The legal provincial speed limits for snowmobiles are: 50 km/hr on trial; 20 km/hr on highways with automobile speed limits of 50 km/hr or less; and 50 km/hr on highways with automobile speed limits of more than 50 km/hr. For more safety information contact: www.ofsc.on.ca For Safety Questions contact: [email protected] (Attention: Safe Rider Club) TRESPASSING Snowmobiling on OFSC trails without a permit is not only unfair and inconsiderate of those who are paying their own way or those who are working so hard to maintain great trails for your riding pleasure, but it can also be in violation of the Trespass to Property Act and subject to charges and fines. Police forces, conservation officers, and OFSC wardens regularly patrol Ontario trails. This map is intended as a guide only.
