Terminology
Handles
The small rectangles, or other icons, which surround a selected frame. Handles allow the frame to be resized, moved, or rotated independently of the other items on the DTP page.

Gradient Fills
A colour fill that gradually changes from one colour to another across the surface of the shape.
Alignment
Positions of text lines on a page or column.
Page/Paper Size
Drop Caps
Drop caps are often seen at the beginning of novels, where the top of the first letter of the first word lines up with the top of the first sentence and drops downto the four or fifth sentence.
Line-Spacing
Line spacing is the space between each line in a paragraph.

Transparency
A graphic image in which the background appears to be invisible
Drop Shadow
A drop shadow is a visual effect consisting of drawing that looks like the shadow of an object, giving the impression that the object is raised above the objects behind it. Creates depth.
Justification

Crop Marks

Page Layout
It is important to get familiar with common terms and their respective layout features.
The terms listed on the following examples are frequently used in DTP (desk top publishing).
