DESCRIPTION

Accompanying blog post here: http://www.mybizperforms.com/e-mail-marketing-rules-are-changing-in-south-africa/ Small businesses often inadvertently fall into the trap of spamming with well intentioned e-mails. This deck tries to educate with a bit of humour thrown in. It is however a very serious topic, not only are the returns diminished when not acting according to industry standards and the law, the most important thing - your reputation - can be severely damaged. In this slideshow the pitfalls of e-mail marketing are touched on, the most common errors, and how not to look like a spammer with a handful of must do techniques to avoid turning into a spammer and sending e-mail that is against the law. I hope you find it interesting and/or entertaining, if you do, please share and leave a comment :)

You’re killing your reputation

You’re killing your reputation

without knowing you do

You think you’re doing a good deed,

When in reality you just piss people off.

What a crap

email!

Now the spammers got

my address

Who are you even?

Who gave you my email?

People don’t trust you anymore because of

what you did.

Especially if you did it repeatedly.

But they won’t tell you.

But they won’t tell you.

That’s ok, I’m telling you now.

Fear not.

We all have done it. Me included.

But it is time • to change

• to become trustworthy

• to make the world a better place

But it is time • to change

• to become trustworthy

• to make the world a better place

.... and to create marketing people actually love

Have you ever done any of these?

• Send an email to a number of people at once without them knowing who you are

• Collect email addresses wherever you can find them and add them to your database

• Insist that your offer is so good that everyone really ought to know about it

• Send an email to a number of people at once and add them in the cc field for all to see

Damn, you’re doomed.

Damn, you’re doomed.

And this poor kitten just died. *

Don’t be that person.

Don’t do email (SMS, MMS, etc.) marketing that nobody wants.

Do become an awesome person people want to hear from any time. Pitch or no pitch.

And follow some of these simple rules

• Always ask permission for adding people to a database (simplest way: have a subscribe form on your website, use Google Docs if you haven’t got a website)

• Provide a simple unsubscribe link (use a mass mailing software that does all that automatically for you: Mailchimp, Aweber, et al)

• Send 80% quality content and only 20% pitch material to your list.

Guard your reputation

• People will know, like and trust you

• People will love your marketing

• People will love you

• People will buy from you

Would you rather be considered

• A spammer? • Or awesome?

Thought so.

Thought so.
