Describe the three types of volcano – active, dormant and extinct.

Give 2 benefits of living in a volcanic area.

Understand the key terms to help describe an earthquake.

Explain how earthquakes are measured and recorded.

TYPES OF VOLCANOES

Active – A volcano that could erupt at any time.

Dormant – A volcano that has not erupted for a long time, 100 years or more.

Extinct – A volcano that can’t erupt again.

REMEMBER TO LABEL

Volcanoes release poisonous gases, clouds of dust, ash and

lava bombs. The lava can reach temperatures of over 100°C

and will destroy everything in its path.

Lava bombs vary in size from small particles up to the size

of cars!These bombs can flatten houses and start fires.

Volcanic eruptions can also spark other hazards such as mud flows,landslides, earthquakes, ash-fall, acid rain and tsunamis.
