Enhancing Your Sanitation Using Chlorine Dioxide Gas

Improves sanitation programs by resetting the sterility of the facility

Pathogens become established in a crevice

Pathogens multiply and leave the crevice

Sanitation Some Pathogens Survive to Continue the Cycle

FDA investigators will be visiting and inspecting every food facility, executing microbiological swab-a-

potentially 100s of samples, testing them for pathogens such as Listeria and Salmonella. Any positive samples would be compared to the

PulseNet database, where a match found could lead to recall.

L. monocytogenes All isolates obtained from human disease cases in the US have been characterized by WGS since the fall of 2013.

Salmonella All isolates planned to be characterized by Spring 2018.

WGS allows for more confident trace back of illness to Food Manufacturers.

The PulseNet database has been receiving isolates for 20 years.

traced back to any source.

At this point, there are over 1,000,000 unsolved illnesses which can still be

matched to food manufacturing sites in the future if positive environmental swabs are

found during inspections.

The DOJ has made it public that it has partnered with FDA and adopted a policy of initiating criminal investigations

against any company (or its employees) that sells a product that cause human illness.

How does chlorine dioxide gas improve sanitation?

Decontamination No Pathogens Survive to Continue the Cycle

Chlorine dioxide gas is registered as a sterilant with the US EPA, which means it is capable of eliminating

all viruses, bacteria, fungi and spores.

The frequency of preventive decontamination depends on the

application. Environmental sampling data should be used to

determine the frequency of decontamination.

Process:

1. Establish baseline environmental sampling data under current

sanitation method

2. Decontaminate with chlorine dioxide gas

3. Perform ongoing post-decon sampling to determine the

preventive benefit of chlorine dioxide gas

Example:

Pre-CD Gas:

Microbial counts spike every ~4 weeks after current sanitation takes place.

Post-CD Gas:

Then CD Gas decontamination should be performed every ~10

weeks.
