• A collection of student work over a period of time

• Purposefully selected

• Demonstrates how and what the student is learning

• Conveys a student’s abilities, experiences, and achievements in thinking, understanding and problem –solving

• Powerful instrument to encourage students to

become more independent self-directed learners as well as more reflective

learners

Digital or Electronic Portfolios

– Minimal storage space– Easy to create back-up files– Can be reproduced, shared or sent

(cheap)– Interactive – can link from doc to doc. – Long shelf life– Increases technology skills– Multi-media

Advantages of digital

• Motivate students • Foster active learning• Serve as instruments for feedback • Serve as instruments for discussion of student

performance • Exhibit “benchmark” performance • Easily accessible • Easily upgraded • Easily cross references student work

Disadvantages of digital

• Access to equipment may be limited

• Initially, a great deal of time is needed to train the students in the technology itself

• Difficult for one teacher to orchestrate

Holding tank for work not yet completed

Work may be selected later for a more permanent display

Exists mainly for the student and the teacher

PowerPoint – excellent application for this

SHOWCASE PORTFOLIOS

Most rewarding for the student

Demonstrates highest level of achievement

Audience is real-world (and possibly entire world)

Showcases student perceptions of favorite, best or most important work

EVALUATON PORTFOLIOS(can be digital or web-based)

Used to document achievement for grading purposes

Used to document progress towards standards

Used to place students appropriately

Audience includes teachers, parents, school districts
