Internet is moving

From: David Alderson CALTECH , NSF Find meeting, Dec. 2005

Situation is getting worse

The real problems of IP world are in the principles

Affirmed on many technical forums (IETF, SIGCOMM,NSF,etc.)

IP addresses ? Yes, before 1994 nearly collapsed. Problem postponed because of reusable private IP, NAT. IPv6 is not so hot

Naming ? Yes, DNS still dominate and it has more problems, special with aimed attacks

Routing ? Yes, since 1989 BGP (protocol based purely on agreement of ISPs -routing policy). All other protocols are unacceptable, technically problematic and they are used just locally, many existing routes is not used, quality of routes is not under control

BGP4 ? Yes, Introducing AS was step to aggregation for routing purposes, it helps to postpone IP addressing problem with effectiveness of routing. Still no other alternative

Security? Yes new types of attacks, viruses, spam, steeling of identities, etc.JN talk on European Future Networking InitiativesTERENA Workshop, Feb. 2007, Amsterdam

In 2009The # of ISP and users grow, IP addresses reached limits !Technology is prepared but massive transition to IPv6 is again

postponed The cyber attacks, spams, pishing, etc. continues with higher

intensity !

In US started intensive discussions how to solve existing problems of Internet in 2005

• Creating the Internet you want in 10,15 Years• The Internet which society TRUST • Support pervasive computing (from PDA to Supercomputing)• Connecting devices and users with all types communication

channels from wireless to optical light paths• Enable accept further developments and innovations

Results:Future Internet Design – FIND

GENI - Global Environment for Network Innovations

Focus of FIND (November 2006)

- On Reinvented Internet Architecture and not on individual network technologies

- Internet evolution influenced by clean-slate approach- Alternate architecture(s) coexist with the current Internet- Virtualization becomes the norm with plurality of

architectures- New services and applications enabled

After 3 years of FIND program NFS started to re-evaluate it and prepare the second phase of FIND program with the goals to select perspective projects and integrate the most interesting idea and solutions into more compact projects

Status of GENIThe GENI project as basic tool for this type of research started

and It has today more clear outlines

PTB aspiration to be European GENI ?Integration element for all existing TB ?

as a member of the GENI clearinghouse federation ?

FI is activity about phenomena of Internet and its influence on humans in everyday life, on the applications which can be demanded by millions of customers and about new potentials for new business.

It is mostly focused on visionary questions and wishes not engineering and technical solutions. The technical fundaments of the lowest layers of Internet are recognized here just as set of technical problems which would be solved as other technical problems in the past.

The program of FIA is prepared from the top by EC and the activities have strong political, social and economical goals. FI is framework for wide research of future Internet. Direction of FI is stimulated via significant money flowing into it from EC and from national resources. In that respect it is very valuable for each potential researcher.

It remains me a little bit initiative “Fifth Generation of Computers” in 80 ties. It also bring progress but in different fields than it was expected.

My personal opinions

Take occasion and start to formulate Czech FI community ! Follow our way of networking research and improvements

We are on good road

My conclusions for CESNET
