• Cruiseport Boston, owned and operated by theMassachusetts Port Authority (Massport) opened in1986 and welcomed 13 cruise ships and a total of11,723 passengers in its first season.

- In 2016, Cruiseport Boston welcomed 114 shipscarrying 309,027 passengers.

- In 2017, Cruiseport Boston will welcome 153 ships,including maiden calls by Rhapsody of the Seas(Royal Caribbean International), Viking Sea andViking Sky (Viking Ocean Cruises), Mein Schiff 6(TUI Cruises), Silver Muse (Silversea Cruises), andLe Soleal (Ponant).

- 19 different cruise lines will call Cruiseport Bostonduring the 2017 cruise season, which runs fromlate April through early November.

• According to a 2013 report by the Cruise LinesInternational Association (CLIA):

- Massachusetts is one of the top ten states in theUnited States for economic impact from the cruiseindustry.

- Cruise industry spending generates over 8,000jobs and $479 million in income for Massachusettsworkers.

- This same report estimated that cruise industrydirect spending in Massachusetts accounted formore than $493 million, with passengers and crewspending $36 million in Boston alone in 2012.

• Cruiseport Boston’s past has been bright, but our futureis even brighter. In 2010, Cruiseport Boston launched arenovation and expansion of its main terminal, whichtransformed a vintage World War I military warehouseinto a 21st century point of departure for ocean-goingvacationers. The $11 million makeover tripled theusable space on the third floor to allow for fasterprocessing of passengers embarking or returning froma cruise. It also added vibrant colors, environmentallyfriendly lighting, new elevators and people movers, andsignage giving visitors a sense of place anddestinations served. In February 2015, renovations tothe second terminal were completed. The $3.2 millionproject included improved ventilation, heating, lighting,additional outlets for power and data to facilitateticketing and baggage functions, new restrooms, andnew storefront installations to provide more daylightinto the existing space.

• Five ships currently homeport in Boston:

- Norwegian Cruise Lines’ Norwegian Dawn sailsweekly to Bermuda in summer and fall, and sailsthe Canada/New England coast in September;

- Holland America Line’s Rotterdam, Maasdam,and Veendam sail every other week to Montrealand Quebec, respectively, between May andOctober. The Veendam also sails weekly toBermuda May-July.

- Royal Caribbean International’s Serenade of theSeas sails from Boston to ports up and down theCanada/New England coast in September andOctober.

• Serenade of the Seas and Norwegian Dawn also offerrepositioning cruises to the Caribbean at the end of theBoston season. Rotterdam sails one Voyage of theVikings to Europe in the summer. Maasdam offers arepositioning cruise to San Diego. Seabourn Questoffers Canada/New England itineraries from Boston.Ponant Yacht Cruises offers a Canada/New Englanditinerary and a Panama repositioning itinerary.

• About 70 percent of travelers taking a Canada/NewEngland cruise from Cruiseport Boston travel here byair, while approximately 95 percent who take aBermuda cruise or a re-positioning cruise to theCaribbean live within a five-hour drive of Boston.

• Cruiseport Boston’s main terminal, known as BlackFalcon Cruise Terminal got its name from the 440-footNorwegian merchant vessel Black Falcon which caughtfire November 2, 1953 claiming the lives of eightlongshoremen. At the time, the terminal served as aUnited States Army Base.

• Cruiseport Boston is conveniently located 10 minutesaway from Boston Logan International Airport via theTed Williams Tunnel and 15 minutes by taxi or publictransportation from Boston’s world-class shoppingdistricts, sightseeing attractions and diverserestaurants.
