LITTLE APPLES AND BIG APPLES

Little Jane likes apples. She likes to look at them, she likes to play with them and she likes to eat them. Her mother gives her apples every day. But today the little girl’ s mother has no apples and she can’t give Jane an apple.

But Jane wants to have an apple. She goes up to her mother and says, “Mummy, I want an apple. Give me an apple, please.” Her mother says, “It is evening now my girl. Apples sleep in the evening. You must go to bed and sleep, too.” “Oh, no, Mummy!” Jane says. “Only little apples sleep. Big apples do not sleep. Give me a big apple, please.”

AT THE DOCTOROne day Tom came to the doctor

and asked something for a headache. The doctor took a bottle with something and put it to the boy’s nose. Tom fainted. When he came to himself, the doctor asked him ,”Did it help your headache?” “Help?” cried the boy. “I had no headache. It is my sister who has it.

GEORGE WASHINGTON AND HIS SECRETARY

George Washington, the first president of the United States of America, had a secretary who was always late. George Washington did not like people who were late. One morning when the secretary came late as usual, he saw that Washington was already in his office and was working. The secretary wanted to excuse himself. So he said: 7

“I’m very sorry to be late, but my watch is wrong.” Washington replied quietly: “Yes, you must get another watch, and if that does not help, I must get another secretary.”

ՋՈՐՋ ՎԱՇԻՆԳՏՈՆԸ և ՆՐԱ ՔԱՐՏՈՒՂԱՐԸ

AN AMERICAN IN JAPANAn American went to Japan. He had a

Japanese servant who was very polite. The American wanted to get up very early in the morning and said to the servant: “Wake me at six o’clock , please. Don’t forget to do it.” At six o’clock the servant entered the American’s room very quickly and, seeing that the American was sleeping, took a sheet of paper and wrote some words on it. Then he left the room as quickly as he had entered it. 10

The American woke up at eleven o’clock, jumped out of bed, looked at his watch and saw the sheet of paper on the table. He read these words on it: “Dear Sir, it is now six o’clock. Please, get up at once.” The servant was too polite, wasn’t he?

AN EXAMPLEFor a long time the physics teacher talked to his class about heat and cold. Then he asked: ”Do you all understand that?” The pupils said that they understood, and the teacher began to ask questions. “John, what is the effect of heat?” “ Heat makes things bigger, sir.” “Good. And what is the effect of cold, Tom?” “Cold makes things smaller, sir,” answered Tom. “That’s right, Tom.” 12

“And now,” said the teacher ,”Who can give me an example?” “I can, sir,” said Dick”. In winter, when it is cold, the days are short, but in summer, when it is hot, the days are long.”

Երկար ժամանակ ֆիզիկայի ուսուցիչը պատմում էր իր դասարանին ջերմության և ցրտի մասին: Հետո նա հարցրեց. - Բոլորդ հասկացա՞ք դա: Աշակերտները ասացին, որ նրանք հասկացան և ուսուցիչը սկսեց հարցեր տալ. -Ջոն, ի՞նչն է տաքության հետևանքը: -Տաքությունը իրերը դարձնում է մեծ, սիր: -Լավ: Եվ ի՞նչն է ցրտի հետևանքը, Թոմ: -Ցուրտը իրերը դարձնում է փոքր, սիր-պատասխանեց Թոմը: -Ճիշտ է, Թոմ: -Իսկ հիմա-ասաց ուսուցիչը,-Ո՞վ կարող է ինձ օրինակ բերել: -Ես կարող եմ, սիր,-ասաց Դիքը-Ձմռանը, երբ ցուրտ է, օրերը կարճ են, բայց ամռանը, երբ շոգ է, օրերը երկար են:

THE ELEPHANT  This happened in a town in India. A man used to give some fruit to an elephant that passed his house every day. The animal became accustomed to it. So every day he put his trunk in at the window to get some fruit. But one day the man had no fruit at home. So when the elephant came, the man said to him, ”I have nothing to give you today.”But the elephant did not go away. He wanted to have his fruit. 15

Then the man thrust his needle into the elephant’s trunk and said again, ”I have nothing to give you today.” The elephant went away but soon he came back. When the man saw him, he became angry, ”Can’t you understand? I have no…” The next moment the elephant put his trunk in at the window and poured a flood of dirty water over the man. 16

Այս դեպքը պատահել է մի հնդկական քաղաքում: Մի մարդ սովորույթ ուներ միրգ տալ փղին, որն ամեն օր անցնում էր իր տան մոտով: Կենդանին արդեն վարժվել էր դրան: Ամեն օր նա իր կնճիթը ներս էր մտցնում պատուհանից , որ միրգ ստանա: Բայց մի օր մարդը տանը միրգ չուներ: Երբ փիղը եկավ, մարդն ասաց. -Ես այսօր ոչինչ չունեմ:Բայց փիղը չէր գնում: Նա ցանկանում էր ստանալ իր միրգը: Հետո մարդը ասեղ խրեց փղի կնճիթի մեջ և ասաց նորից. -Ես այսօր ոչինչ չունեմ քեզ տալու: Փիղը գնաց, բայց շուտով հետ եկավ: Երբ մարդը տեսավ նրան, բարկացավ. -Չե՞ս հասկանում, ես ոչինչ...: Այդ վայրկյանին փիղը իր կնճիթը մտցրեց պատուհանից ներս և կեղտոտ ջրի շիթ լցրեց մարդու վրա: 17
