Future of LibrariesLisa Bea Walters

Definition of Library

A place set apart to contain books, periodicals, and other material for reading, viewing, listening, study, or reference, where books may be read or borrowed.

A building or room containing collections of books, periodicals, and sometimes films and recorded music for people to read, borrow, or refer to.

A place in which literary, musical, artistic, or reference materials (as books, manuscripts, recordings, or films) are kept for use but not for sale.

Are These Definitions Accurate?

While in the past these definitions were accurate

I believe libraries in the future will be

different in appearance and function.

Students & Function

More Than a Place

A future library is a mindset

to encourage exploration, discovery,

engagement and creativity

Students

• Students are active learners

• Students are proficient in using tools and resources and evaluating information

• Students explore to develop solutions to problems

Educators

• Educators proactively accept changes in the format of tools and resources and methods of accessing information

• Curriculum focuses on literacy (print, audio, visual, digital)

• Educators partner and team teach moving out of silos

• Adults are flexible and create an environment that challenges learners
