Why actually? Dr Ulrich Kramerexplains to Schau TV theopportunities of a completedefossilisation of the transportationsector in 2050

The author of the FVV Fuel Study III " Defossilising thetransportation sector - options and requirements forGermany", Dr.-Ing. Ulrich Kramer (Ford-Werke GmbH)explains in the series "Why actually?" of the Austrianregional channel Schau TV to the interviewer IrmgardKischko why it makes sense politically to shape thefuture of mobility in a way that is open to technologyand why the possibilities offered by e-fuels for climate-neutral mobility in Germany and Europe in 2050should also be taken into account in legislation.

The EU auto industry launched a 10-point plan to help implement theEuropean Green Deal

The European Automobile Manufacturers AssociationACEA launched in Brussels on 22 January 2020 a 10-point plan to help implement the European GreenDeal, in which the 16 major automobile manufacturersset out how CO2 emissions can be further reduced inthe most effective way. At the press conference,Michael Manley, ACEA President and CEO of FiatChrysler Automobiles (FCA), emphasized threepriorities for climate neutrality of the transportationsector in 2050: remaining technology neutral – rollingout across the EU a dense network of charging pointsand re-fuelling stations for electric vehicles –developing consistent and economically-sustainableincentive schemes for users of both cars andcommercial vehicles.

Investing €57.4 billion in R&D annually, theautomotive sector is Europe's largest privatecontributor to innovation. Much of this investment isdedicated to clean mobility solutions.

UNECE | Media advisory dated 20/01/2020

UN GRPE launched regulatorypackage for RDE test procedures

On 17th January the GRPE (Working Group onPollution and Energy), a subsidiary body of theUNECE World Forum for Harmonisation of VehicleRegulations, presented the final draft of a new UNregulation on the WLTP test procedure, which is due tobe adopted in June 2020 and enter into force inJanuary 2021. The draft UN regulation builds on theGlobal Technical Regulation (GTR) for WLTP adoptedby the World Forum 2015 and adds administrativeprovisions on conformity of production, durability andpollutatnt emission limits. Vehicles type-registered andapproved for mutual recognition under the newregulation will need to comply with stringent emissionlimits for hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO),nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM).This will ensure that emissions remain under the setlimits whether the vehicle is driven in urban, rural ormotorway environments. Furthermore, a specificaccelerated ageing test will be introduced to guaranteethat new vehicles' pollution control devices remain fullyeffective up to 160,000 km.

PG5 | Dynamic Acoustic Optimisationof Engine Components, Engines andPowertrain Systems

To reliably predict interactions between acoustic andvibration phenomena of complex powertrain systemsin an early development phase, appropriate test andsimulation procedures are indispensable. The FVVPlanning Group 5 "Engine Dynamics & Acoustics"headed by Prof. Dr. Christoph Brands (SchaefflerTechnologies) lays the groundwork for this withnumerous projects which range from the detailedanalysis of single engine components to automatedprocesses for engine noise and transfer path analysisinto the vehicle interior.

PG1 | Extension of the CharacteristicMap of a TC Compressor by ActiveCross-Section Variation

Downsizing in a single-stage turbocharged engineconcept goes hand in hand with the trade-off betweenhigh rated power and acceptable performance in thelower engine speed range. In order to extend thestable characteristic map range, a variable cross-section concept for the radial compressor has beenanalyzed. The investigations were carried out as partof an FVV research project (1194) at the LeibnizUniversity Hannover and the Technical UniversityBraunschweig. Based on a decision taken by theGerman Bundestag, the project was supported withinthe framework of the Industrial Collective Research(IGF) programme (IGF No. 18572 N) by the FederalMinistry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) andthe AIF. It was coordinated by an expert group led byMarc Sens (IAV).

FVV Newsletter | January 2020At the end of January, is it all right to still wish a successful new year? Of course! The FVV wishes you allsuccess in the implementation of your ambitious plans. For in this new decade, the basic requirements forclimate-neutral transportation and for a sustainable energy supply using alternative fuels and renewables

must be significantly developed further and discussed by society as a whole. We ourselves will do ourutmost to support you with everything that Industrial Collective Research can achieve on a pre-competitivelevel. At the FVV 2020 Spring Conference - 26/27 March 2020 - you can expect an orientation lecture on a

new FVV meta study on the topic of "CtG Life Cycle Analysis" to be held in the framework of theinformation sessions for ENGINES, in addition to initial results in the research area of fuel cells. The

information session for TURBOMACHINES is dedicated to state-of-the-art materials research: We willpresent, among other topics, a new Engineering Guide summarising the results of more than 30 years ofsystematic research in the field of "Creep-Crack Initiation / Creep-Crack and Creep-Fatigue Behaviour".

See you in Würzburg? At one of our cooperation events? Or in one of our discussion groups or project usercommittee meetings? The FVV works as a "hands-on club" relying on community participation. Anyhow, we

are looking forward to seeing you!
