• Why– To assist the government program managers (and additional
audiences) to more easily understand the value of and role of geospatial thinking and tools in their everyday business functions.

Background
The GEB Work Group has been profiling examples of successful geospatial technology implementations in the
federal government and identifying trends, commonalities, and best practices. The GEB Work Group then shares
these examples and best practices with federal agencies, partners, and the general public.
GEB Work Group Recent Activities
Review of Use Cases
• Interviewed and developed use cases and fact sheets for 13 agencies (to date)• CDC used GIS to aid relief after the Myanmar Cyclone • HUD provides crucial address validation with geocoding • BLM's NILS GeoCommunicator converts coordinates from
latitude/longitude to township/range and vice-versa• DOJ's MAPS program allows law enforcement officials to
map crime and use GIS tools to predict where a criminal may strike
• FEMA created an Enterprise GIS Office that coordinates GIS and provides professional and technical GIS services
• USDA's Farm Service Agency (FSA)• Mission: support American agriculture through resource
conservation, disaster response and stabilization of farm income
• Common Land Unit (CLU) Data Layer• Accurate maps of farm land and crops are critical for FSA
• Over 7 years, FSA digitized 2 million+ land records from 2,300+ offices around the country
• FSA compiled records into a central enterprise wide database using ArcGIS/SDE tools
• Benefits of CLU• Numerous authorized stakeholders productively make use of data
• Centralized data and streamlined visualization process leads to significant cost and time savings
Use Case: USDA's CLU Data Layer
• The GEB Best Practices document describes lessons, trends, and benefits observed in use cases
• Includes a survey of existing best practice reports to augment GEB research
• Some Key Themes and Observations• Focus on interoperability and reuse• Increasing role of Enterprise GIS Offices/Coordination• Increasing integration of GIS tools in various
environments • Use of Web 2.0 technologies to complement standard GIS
interfaces• Key role for stakeholders
Best Practices
• GEB Article submitted to ArcUser • "Improving Services to Citizens through Place Based
Approaches: Geo-enabling Federal Business Processes“
• Fact sheets posted to FGDC Website • http://www.fgdc.gov/geospatial-lob/factsheets
• Panels completed for ESRI IUC and Fed UC conferences
• Pursuing additional publications • Federal Computer Week, Government Computer News,
and Government Executive
