We support the growth and development of London through 2 key objectives:

1.Creating a resource efficient city:– Improving energy and water efficiency

– Utilising waste as a resource

2.Creating a resilient, greener city– Improving London’s air quality

– Increasing resilience to extreme weather

– Enhancing green infrastructure

TEAM OBJECTIVES

WORKING WITH BIDS

• A call to action – introducing 4 projects where we are working or want to work with BIDs:

1. FoodSave

2. Greening the BIDs

3. Business Energy Challenge

Providing free support to 240 food SMEs to reduce food waste, divert surplus food to good purposes & manage unavoidable food waste more sustainably.

Funded by Mayor of London, ERDF and LWARB, and GLA is working with two delivery partners:

Restaurants, hotels, pubs, quick service restaurants and canteens

Food retailers, manufacturers, street food vendors, markets, wholesalers and food growers

Business benefits

•Free support

•Understanding of food waste

•Potential cost savings

•Improved efficiency

•Improved CSR

Results so far

The first 15 hospitality businesses supported:

•Prevented an average of 1.6 tonnes of food waste per year

•Saved on average of over £6,000 per year

Opportunities for BIDs to get involved:•Make businesses in your area aware of FoodSave opportunities through communications•Introduce the FoodSave team to food SMEs in your area •Hold a FoodSave event or invite the FoodSave team to present at an existing event

• Mayoral project to deliver green infrastructure in BIDs and employer partnerships, in conjunction with CRP.

• Green infrastructure includes street trees, green roofs, rain gardens, pocket parks etc

• Increases resilience to extreme weather

• Ensures London remains an attractive place in which to live, work and invest.

• To date we have worked with BIDs in central London to undertake 15 GI Audits, to identify opportunities for greening:

• Over 300 rain gardens

• 200 + green walls

• More than 100ha of green roofs

GREENING THE BIDS

• We are supporting BIDs to deliver GI:– Funding for 15 demonstration projects (7 completed), 25% GLA

funded

– Advice and guidance to facilitate many more projects

• This is helping to meet Mayor’s target to increase green cover in the CAZ by 5% by 2030.

• New Mayoral awards programme for businesses reducing their emissions from their property portfolios.

• Tenants and owners.

• Awards November 2014, hosted by Mayor.

• Will be blogging on london.gov.uk about good examples of emission reductions from buildings in the leads up to awards.

BUSINESS ENERGY CHALLENGE

• Awards: Gold (top 10%), Silver (next 15%) and Bronze (next 20%) awards in first year.

• Certificates for every business that enters.

• Will develop specials awards e.g. individual building reductions. Also, platinum award from 2016.

• Developing online tool for businesses to input energy data, tool will convert to carbon dioxide emissions.

• Opportunities for BIDs to get involved:– Please connect us with businesses that we can speak

to about the Challenge.

– Promote the Challenge through your networks.

– Invite us to speak to a business audience.
