THE NEXT GROUP OF LINES WILL BE FORMATTED INTO A TABLE OF HOW MANY CRIMES OF EACH TYPE WERE COMMITTED IN EACH MONTH OF THE 1ST QUARTER
• We will arrange the data neatly into columns using Tabs (Tables/Tabs, get it?)
• First we have to set the tab stops in the columns where we want text to jump to when the tab key is pressed
• This is done using the ruler at the top of the document
THE FIRST LINE IN THE GROUP IS THE COLUMN HEADING
COLUMN HEADINGS ARE CENTERED
CLICK ON THE 2-INCH MARKER IN THE RULER SELECT Add center tab-stop
KEEPING THAT LINE SELECTED, SET CENTER TAB-STOPS AT THE 3 AND 4-INCH MARKERS
IF YOU MISS THE TARGET, JUST CLICK THE TAB STOP SYMBOL AND DRAG IT TO THE PROPER PLACE
NOTE THE APPEARANCE OF THE SELECTED LINE DOES NOT CHANGE
De-select that line by clicking anywhere on the next lineLook at the page ruler, the center tab-stops are goneThat’s because the ruler settings only apply to the lines that are selected at the time. If no lines are selected, the ruler settings apply to the entire document.
SELECT THE NEXT LINES FROM “Murder” TO “Speeding”
CLICK ON THE 2-INCH MARKER IN THE RULER SELECT Add right tab-stop
KEEPING THOSE LINES SELECTED, SET RIGHT TAB-STOPS AT THE 3 AND 4-INCH MARKERS
NOTE THE APPEARANCE OF THE SELECTED LINE DOES NOT CHANGETHIS IS BECAUSE TAB-STOPS ONLY WORK ON TABS AND WE HAVEN’T INSERTED ANY…YET
CLICK AT THE BEGINNING OF JANUARY AND PRESS THE TAB KEY
REPEAT FOR FEBRUARY AND MARCH
NOTE, THE SPACING WILL NOT LINE UP PROPERLY UNTIL THE THIRD TAB-STOP IS IN PLACE
USING THE SAME PROCESS, INSERT TABS IN FRONT OF EACH OF THE THREE 0S AND 1S AT THE ENDS OF THE NEXT LINES.
SELECT THE LINE STARTING WITH “*DOES NOT...”
CLICK THE ITALICS ICON IN THE TOOL BAR TO MAKE THE TEXT ITALICS
SELECT THE LINE “The crimes committed are:”
CHANGE THE STYLE TO Heading 3
MAKE THEM INTO A Bulleted List
SELECT THE LAST THREE LINES
AND YOU’RE DONE!
