GRACE NOTES May 2016
Pastor’s Notes: As you may know, May 15 is Pentecost Sunday, the day the church marks the unleashing of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples, a few weeks after the resurrection of Jesus. There will be three special things happening that Sunday, and I think all of them, in their own way, are particularly appropriate to do on that particular day of the church year.
During the morning service that day, we will have a short dedication liturgy for the new hymnals. Glory to God: The Presbyterian Hymnal will have been in our pews for a few weeks by then, and you will have started to get acquainted with some of the church’s traditional “standards,” some old favorites that had somehow never made it into Presbyterian collections before, some new hymns already on their way to “classic” status, and a broader array of the song of the global church than a hymnal of an American mainline Protestant denomination has ever included. We will have a larger celebration in the future, but we will mark the beginning of the hymnal’s work among us on May 15.
We also have a congregational dinner after the service that day. I’ve mentioned a few times that Jesus and the disciples spent a lot of time around food during Jesus’s life on earth, especially in the gospel of Luke. It seems only appropriate that we take at least this small step to emulate that part of Jesus’s life with his followers, right?
Finally, May 15 will also be a somber occasion, as Highlands Presbyterian Church in Gainesville will mark its dissolution with a final service on May 15 at 3:00 p.m. at Highlands. All of the churches of the presbytery are invited to attend.
I think that all of these represent the moving of the Holy Spirit in some way. The power of song, and particularly of singing together, has been extolled on many occasions, and a good meal and fellowship are also occasions for the Spirit to move.
But yes, even the closing of a church can also be a Pentecost event. For one, we mark and celebrate the work the Spirit has done in and through Highlands for these many years. But we are also made aware that the Spirit also moves even through this event. We cannot predict what new thing might happen in that place, nor what moving of the Spirit might occur as the members of that congregation seek new church homes. (Speaking of which: by all means be welcoming and inviting, but for goodness sake don’t act like vultures!) We know not what the Spirit may unleash here. But it is our call to respond as the Spirit leads, and not to be a hindrance or stumbling block.
I hope you’ll be present for all three of these Pentecost happenings.

PROPERTY COMMITTEE
The overhead entryways on the North and East sides of the Fellowship Hall have been replaced. This is due to the hard work and generosity of Bill Preston who supervised and funded the project. Bill ensured that the quality of the construction was top notch.
The ice machine in the kitchen of the fellowship hall has finally given out after over fifteen years of good service. It is being replaced with a new commercial unit that should give us many years of solid performance. Thanks again to Bill Preston for his ongoing efforts over the years to keep the old machine running and for selecting the new replacement.
The waste removal contract has been renegotiated to lower the monthly cost to less than half of the prior charge. Thanks to Pauline Kirk for accomplishing this. A lock has been placed on the dumpster to prevent unauthorized dumping. The key to the lock is attached to a plastic handle which is hanging on the outside of the cabinets by the exterior door in the kitchen.
The phone and internet service has been switched to Cox Cable which reduces our monthly expenditures by almost half. Thanks to Clint Collins for making this happen.
FROM THE TREASURER The finance committee would like to present the approved 2016 budget as promised in the March/
April Grace Notes. It is always a work in progress as we try to fit expenses to income. It is on the
following 3 pages.
If you have any questions about our budget, please contact Lois Butler, treasurer, at 352-262-5893.
