Greg Hands joins the Cabinet asChief Secretary to the Treasury first MP for Fulham at the Cabinet tablesince 1970, first MP for Chelsea since 1940

The Prime Minister has appointed Greg Hands, Member of Parliamentfor Chelsea and Fulham, as Chief Secretary to the Treasury, in thefirst Cabinet reshuffle following the General Election. Greg Hands will take up the second most senior position in theTreasury, after the Chancellor, George Osborne, The Chief Secretaryis responsible for public expenditure including spending reviews andstrategic planning, welfare reform, and efficiency and value for moneyin public service. Greg is the first MP for Fulham at the Cabinet table since LaboursMichael Stewart in 1970, and the first MP for Chelsea since theConservatives Sir Samuel Hoare in 1940. In his new role Greg will attend meetings of Cabinet as part of theDavid Camerons majority Government. Commenting on Twitter following his appointment, Greg said: It is agreat honour that David Cameron has appointed me Chief Secretaryto the Treasury. I am already hard at work delivering the Long TermEconomic Plan. Greg later added: I am delighted to be part of the Treasury Team,charged with building a more secure future for Britain, which is nowpossible under this new Conservative majority Government. At the end of last the Labour Government, the country was borrowingover 150 billion a year and unemployment had increased by nearlyhalf a million. Britain had suffered the deepest recession since theWar, and had the second biggest structural deficit of any advancedeconomy. Over the last five years, we have had to make realistic assessmentsabout the state of the British economy and this involved taking difficultdecisions to reduce the deficit and control spending. Thanks to thehard work of the British people, this long-term economic plan isworking. The deficit is down by half, there are over 2 million moreprivate sector jobs, and there are 760,000 more businesses. But the job isnt done: there is more to do. We intend to run a budgetsurplus so that we start paying down our debts and keep our economysecure, reduce spending and cut out waste, instead of increasingtaxes on working people. We will control the welfare budget so wesave money and reward work by taking everyone earning less than12,500 out of Income Tax altogether and pass a law to ensure wehave a Tax-Free Minimum Wage in this country. The other Treasury ministers appointed in the reshuffle are DavidGauke MP, Financial Secretary; Damian Hinds MP, ExchequerSecretary; Harriett Baldwin MP, Economic Secretary and City Minister;and economist Jim ONeil who will serve as Commercial Secretary.

David Camerons Conservatives winelection to form majority Government At the General Election last week, the Conservatives won 331 seats toLabours 232. Prime Minister David Cameron will now hold atheoretical majority of 12 in the House of Commons, allowing hisGovernment to pursue its agenda of building a more secure future forBritain. The Conservatives overall victory in the election came as somewhatof a surprise to many in the country after most opinion polls hadpredicted a hung parliament. In this historic victory the Conservatives won 28 more seats than in2010, which is the first time an incumbent governing party hasincreased its seats since 1983 when Margaret Thatcher won a secondterm following the Falklands conflict. Newly re-elected MP for Chelsea and Fulham, Greg Hands, said: TheConservatives conclusive victory at this election is a clear vote ofpublic confidence in our long term economic plan that we have beenimplementing for the last five years and will now continue with for thenext Parliament. We now have a clear mandate to implement ourmanifesto pledges which will work towards building a more securefuture for Britain. The people have spoken and they have clearly chosen a strongfuture for Britain, with the firm and decisive leadership of DavidCameron, and rejected the package of instability, higher taxes andhigher debt that Labour were offering. We now have a duty to repay the trust that Britain has placed in us,and to get to work on our plans to reduce the deficit, build theeconomy, create prosperity, and continue to improve education in ourcountry so that families can enjoy a better future. The Conservatives fought the election campaign on six key manifestothemes:

Later this month will see the State Opening of Parliament, onWednesday 27th May, in which the Queens Speech will outline moredetails of how these ambitions will form part of the Governmentslegislative programme for the next year. The Conservatives are putting working people front and centre of thenew Governments mission. The Prime Minister will announce newlegislation that will be introduced within weeks to reform welfare, offermore apprenticeships, create two million jobs and help with childcarecosts. This is a One Nation Government that will act in the interests of thewhole country and be on the side of all hard-working people as Britainheads to a better, more secure future.

Greg Hands welcomes 2,900 localbusinesses benefiting from tax cut Conservative Candidate, Greg Hands, has welcomed new figuresreleased by HMRC which show that 2,900 businesses in Chelsea andFulham have benefited from the Governments EmploymentAllowance since its introduction a year ago, making it easier for smallbusinesses to hire staff and create new jobs. Official statistics released by HMRC (30 April 2015), showed theEmployment Allowance take-up estimates for the full year 2014-15. The Conservative led coalition Government introduced theEmployment Allowance in April 2014 as a tax cut to support jobs. Itprovides up to 2,000 off the National Insurance bill for everyemployer, and is open to businesses, charities, and communityamateur sports clubs. The allowance means a business could now hire someone on 22,400a year, or three people working full-time on the minimum wage, andnot have to pay any employer National Insurance Contributions. Thisis making it easier for local businesses to grow and create more jobs. Since it was launched in April 2014, over 1.1 million employers acrossthe country have benefited from the Employment Allowance. Additionally, employment is up by 2 million since May 2010, under aConservative Government. In the three months to April 2010, therewere 29.048 million people in employment. In the three months toFebruary 2015 there were 31.049 million people in work. Greg Hands, Conservative MP for Chelsea and Fulham, commentedon the new statistics: The Conservatives economic plan is backingbusinesses to create jobs, which is why it is so important that we stickto that plan so we can provide more people with the economic securitythat a regular wage brings. Since we introduced the EmploymentAllowance a year ago 188,000 businesses in London, and 2,900 righthere in Chelsea and Fulham have had their National Insurance taxcut, making it easier for them to hire staff and create new jobs. Chancellor George Osborne welcomed the figures, saying: It is greatnews that 1.1 million small businesses are now claiming ourEmployment Allowance. This confirms that our EmploymentAllowance has been a huge success - and a real boost to job-creatingsmall businesses. Backing small business is at the heart of our long-term economic plan, a plan that is delivering jobs and growth acrossthe country. Britain has now created over 2 million jobs in the past fiveyears, and our 2,000 cashback on jobs has made it easier for smallbusinesses to take on new staff.
