CHANEL NEWS Term 2 — Week 1 —24 April 2020 — VOLUME 61

Dr Susan Bunkum—Principal

In this year that has seen so many

departures from the norm, our virtual

ANZAC Day Ceremony this morning

constitutes another of these instances.

As one of the most important

observances in our national calendar,

ANZAC Day is a day which sees all

Australians and New Zealanders unite as

they participate in Dawn Services, marches and wreath

laying ceremonies of remembrance across the length and

breadth of our two nations.

In light of the importance of this day, our

College Captains and Vice-Captains –

Siena Linforth, Daniel Gold, Lucy Devlin

and Lachlan Black - presented a very

moving on-line commemoration

ceremony which was accessed by those

who were present at school and those

who joined us from their homes.

The Captains were joined by Year 11

student, Aurora McBride, who sang

the Australian National Anthem for

our ceremony. Special thanks to

these students who, once again, have provided exemplary

leadership within our community, albeit in an on-line

capacity.

While on the subject of ‘on-line’, I am very pleased to report

that we have had an incredibly successful Week 1 of learning

at home. Our students have been ‘present’

in their classroom Google meets and have

been fully engaged in their learning. At the

same time, students whose parents are

essential workers, have been accessing their coursework

whilst being supervised at the College.

We thank those parents and students who have provided us

with feedback about how things are going. We can assure

you that we have considered ways in which suggestions for

improvement can be incorporated into what we have done

and what we will continue to do in the weeks ahead.

Overall, the success of Week 1 is due to the wonderful work

that has been done by all members of staff. In particular, I

thank:

Ms Lorraine Wolffe, our Assistant Principal –

Curriculum, for the expert leadership that she has

provided to us as we have embraced the

opportunities associated with teaching and learning in

an on-line domain.

Mrs Lynn Herbert, our Assistant Principal – Pastoral

Support and Planning, for the work that she has done

to ensure that our daily program, on-line and at the

College, has run smoothly.

All teachers and Instrumental Music tutors who have

worked incredibly hard in the last month to ensure

that Google Classroom and Google Meets have made

learning from home authentic and engaging.

All Support Staff – Teacher Assistants, School Officers,

Library Staff, Tuckshop, Grounds/Facilities and

Cleaning staff – who continue their work which

supports all that we do on site.

All students who have been fabulous in their

engagement in their on-line classrooms.

I also thank all

Parents/Carers who

have supported their

sons and daughters with their learning at home programs.

We value our partnership with you and understand that

these weeks may present you with some challenges. Please

be assured that we are available to support you with any

queries or concerns that you may have, as together we work

to ensure that your sons and daughters continue to have

high quality learning experiences.

Finally, I pray that God will bless you, your families, and our

nation in these times of challenge and uncertainty.

Kind regards

Project Compassion

Many thanks to everyone who supported Project Compassion during Lent. Your willingness to help others has enabled us as a community, to raise much needed funds to assist the work of Caritas. Caritas provides funds to empower people through education and employment opportunities which enables them to break the poverty cycle within their communities.

Easter Appeal

Thank you for your kind donations received for our Easter Appeal. St Vincent de Paul received several boxes of treats that they have distributed to people in need in Gladstone and surrounding areas making Easter a little brighter for them.

Years 10 and 11 Retreats

The Years 10 and Year 11 Retreats scheduled for Term 2, will not proceed in their present format on the dates as indicated on the calendar. Updated information will be provided in due course.

ANZAC Day – 25 April

Due to Covid 19 virus, ANZAC Day will not be commemorated in our normal way. However, as this day is very significant in our history, because it is the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during WW1, as a college we will participate in an on-line ANZAC Day ceremony. We will also encourage all members of our community to pause for a; moment & commemorate ANZAC Day in some way in their homes.

PRAYER: Almighty God, we remember with thanksgiving, those who made the supreme sacrifice for us in times of war. We pray that their offering of their lives may not have been in vain. May your grace enable us this day to dedicate ourselves to the cause of justice, freedom and peace; and give us the wisdom and strength to build a better world. Amen.

COUNSELLING

Chaylene Bazeley —College Counsellor

Instrumental Music Online

Stacy Berry - Instrumental Music Coordinator

Term 2 Instrumental Music is in full swing. It has been a whole new experience for our students, tutors and especially Mrs Berry. Setting up Google meet events, sending reminders, resending links minutes before lessons and saying “Hello” from our computer screens has certainly been different; but something that we are all taking in our stride.

A huge congratulations to all of our Instrumental Music students and special thanks to our tutors, Miss Jade, Mrs Elvery, Mrs Perrett, Ms Clare and Mr Evans, for being so incredible, amazingly resilient and continuing lessons online. It has been wonderful to see you all practising and continuing your music.

Sadly, due to the current global situation, Queensland Catholic Music Festival (QCMF) has been cancelled. We know our Band, Choir, Drumline, Rock band and Ensembles have been working extremely hard. Mrs Berry, Mrs Rippingale and the tutors are coming up with some ideas to ensure we offer opportunities to showcase our students musical talents. At this stage, please mark Thursday 8 October in your calendars as this will be our annual Instrumental Music Showcase, which is a fabulous night for all involved.

Students keep up the great work, I am so proud of you all! Mrs Berry.

Anzac Day Remembrance

The COVID-19 outbreak in Australia has led to the cancellation of nationwide Anzac Day services. Only a handful of Dawn Services will be held around the nation and these will not be open to the public.

Even though we are unable to participate in formal Anzac Day commemorations this year (Saturday 25 April), we are being encouraged as Queenslanders to step out onto our driveways, verandas, porches & patios, at 6am in the morning and commemorate those who have served this country, those who are currently serving this country and those who have come home with their injuries and are still suffering with those injuries. (Chairman of RSL Queensland, Tony Ferris).

In our own way, Chanel College commemorated Anzac Day on Friday 24 April with a small ceremony.
