Angela Hewitt turns to two of Mozart’s greatest and most popular concertos for her latest album. Together with her frequent collaborators, the Orchestra da Camera di Mantova and brilliant Finnish conductor Hannu Lintu, she presents these works in performances which are both elegantly stylish and profoundly felt. This release is completed by a personal reflection on the music by Hewitt herself in the accompanying booklet.

The surprising success of Michael Tilson Thomas’s recent Beethoven recordings for SFS Media continues this month with a superb recording of the composer’s beloved Symphony No.9 (p.25). Marc-André Hamelin’s series of Haydn Piano Sonatas won the hearts of critics around the world. Now Hamelin partners with Canadian superstars Bernard Labadie and Les Violons du Roy on an exciting new recording of Haydn’s Piano Concertos for Hyperion (p.13). Canadian artists also feature prominently on Orange Mountain’s recording of the Symphony No.3 and suite from The Hours by Philip Glass with the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra led by Anne Manson (p.23). On tour this month in North America, the Choir of King’s College, Cambridge presents the second release on their new label - taking a fresh look at Mozart’s unfinished Requiem (p.17). Volume 59 of Hyperion’s unstoppable Romantic Piano Concerto series focuses on works by Polish composers, with Jonathan Plowright as the soloist (p.15). The harmonia mundi label offers a wealth of riches, with new releases from La Nuova Musica (Handel & Vivaldi, p.5), cellist Emmanuelle Bertrand (Shostakovich, p.7), oboist Nicholas Daniel (Musgrave, p.8) and the Freiburger Barockorchester (Bach, p.9). Last but not least, up and coming young pianist Joseph Moog offers a Scarlatti Sonata recital with a twist for Onyx (p.21). Non-classical priorities include the latest from jazz guitarist Gilad Hekselman (p.31) and a world fusion release that partners Fanfara Tirana and Transglobal Underground (p.37).

IMPORTMyra Hess, the most important of Matthay’s pupils, became a household name on both sides of the Atlantic. In her youth, she played a wide repertoire including much contemporary music, but in her later years she became best known for her playing of the great classics of the Germanic repertoire, particularly Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart and Schumann. During World War II, she established the National Gallery Concerts which became central to London’s cultural life. This set contains, for the first time, all the studio recordings she made from her first visit to the studio in 1928 to her final LP in 1957. Though Hess professed to hate recording (much preferring to play live), she did set down many wonderful performances, none greater than those of Beethoven’s late sonatas Op.109 and Op.110.

IMPORTSpanish counter-tenor Xavier Sabata expresses tears, joy and rage in his portrayal of the ‘bad boys’ from Handel’s operas on this riveting new disc from Aparté. Performing a fascinating selection of arias from Tamerlano, Ariodante, Teseo, Amadigi di Gaula, Giulio Cesare and Ottone, Sabata is accompanied by the Italian ensemble Il Pomo d’Oro conducted by Riccardo Minasi. Sabata graduated in drama from the Theatre Institute in his hometown and studied with the famous duo of Mitsuko Shirai and Hartmut Höll. He also took master classes with Montserrat Figueras, Richard Levitt and Christoph Prégardien.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDThe Ragazze Quartet has been acclaimed for their musical enthusiasm, talent, versatility and presentation. The young Dutch ensemble frequently collaborates with composers, musicians — classical or otherwise — and artists working in a variety of disciplines. In spite of its life-affirming title, Vivere, this is not exactly a cheerful disc. All three compositions refer in various ways to death. This is reflected in the key signatures of the repertoire (D minor is considered the key of death) and the programmatic content of the Schubert and Widmann quartets. The cellist actually ‘dies’ in the Widmann! Spectacularly well recorded, this disc presents an unusual and compelling program and a dynamic and exciting new ensemble.
IMPORTRecorded live in Naples in July 2011, this album from the Neapolis Ensemble presents a selection of Neapolitan music spanning four centuries. Lo Guarracino ranges from traditional melodies and dances of the 15th and 16th centuries to an 18th-century Classical aria by Leonardo Vinci. In pursuit of an ideal mix of classic and traditional music, the Neapolis Ensemble performs on both classical instruments like the violoncello and baroque flutes and popular instruments like the tambourine, mandolin and guitar. The group performs in a wide range of venues — from opera houses to ethnic music festivals — ever reinventing the traditional Neapolitan musical repertoire.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDDavid Bates leads the ensemble La Nuova Musica in a pair of contrasting settings of Psalm 109. Handel’s masterful and ambitious HWV 282 was penned in 1707 during a visit to Italy. Vivaldi’s vivid and economical RV 807 (his third Dixit Dominus) was long mistakenly attributed to Baldassare Galuppi; it probably dates from the early 1730s. Rounding out the program is Vivaldi’s dazzling motet In furore iustissimae irae, featuring soprano Lucy Crowe.

IMPORTLicht und Liebe features Schubert’s vocal duets, trios and quartets — works that reveal the full variety of his creative impulses. Composed for the famous ‘Schubertiads’ — the composer’s intimate gatherings of friends — they were sometimes written in dialogue and sometimes in unison; they were at times close to opera, or to Singspiel scenes or choral music. These delightful vocal ensembles, performed here by Marlis Petersen, Anke Vondung, Werner Güra and Konrad Jarnot, display a rare combination of skill, taste and compositional freedom that offers a special and immediate appeal for today’s listener.

IMPORTWritten 25 years apart, the two masterpieces for cello by Shostakovich recorded here represent very different periods in the composer’s career. The audaciously insolent Cello Sonata of 1934 is contemporary with Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District — the opera soon to plunge Shostakovich into disgrace with Stalin. It is paired with the bitter and self-questioning Cello Concerto No.1 from 1959, a work by a traumatized humorist who had long since learned not to laugh. Soloist Emmanuelle Bertrand is joined by pianist Pascal Amoyel for the sonata and by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales led by Pascal Rophé for the concerto.

IMPORTRich and powerful musical language and a strong sense of drama have made Scottish-American composer Thea Musgrave (b.1928) one of the most respected and exciting contemporary voices. This recording by star oboist Nicholas Daniel features a collection of Musgrave’s chamber works for oboe composed between 1960 and 2009 and includes several works written especially for Daniel. Joined by flutist Emer McDonough, oboist James Turnbull, clarinetist Joy Farrall, pianist Huw Watkins and members of the Chilingirian Quartet, Daniel plays eight works in a variety of combinations ranging from duos to quartets.

IMPORTBach’s three well-known Violin Concertos are paired here with a splendid concerto for three violins, reconstructed from the surviving version for three harpsichords, BWV 1064. The composer’s fascination with the Italian solo concerto, which resulted in numerous arrangements and compositions, dates to his second Weimar period from 1708 to 1717. However, current research has revealed that Bach wrote the violin concertos around 1720, during his engagement as Kapellmeister in Cöthen. On this recording, soloists Petra Müllejans, Gottfried von der Goltz, and Anne Katharina Schreiber are backed by the matchless Freiburger Barockorchester in dazzling readings of these evergreen favorites.

IMPORTBrahms’s implacable self-criticism was at its height in the domain of chamber music; he was already forty when he produced his second String Quartet (of three) after two decades of rejected attempts, which only makes the work’s formal perfection and intense lyricism all the more striking. In the case of the much-loved Clarinet Quintet, it was a meeting with the clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld that inspired Brahms to emerge from his self-imposed retirement to compose this almost unbearably nostalgic musical testament, completed five years before his death. The acclaimed Jerusalem Quartet is joined by clarinetist Sharon Kam in highly charged performances of these two masterworks of the Romantic.

IMPORTThis 2012 live recording from the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra couples two of the most popular works in the classical repertoire. Led by up-and-coming American conductor Ryan McAdams, the program leads off with an electrifying rendition of Rimsky-Korsakov’s symphonic suite Scheherazade. Based on One Thousand and One Nights, the work combines two features common to Russian music and of Rimsky-Korsakov in particular: dazzling, colorful orchestration and a keen interest in the Orient. The recording concludes with an outstanding performance of Rodrigo’s beloved Concierto de Aranjuez performed by Angel Romero, one of the greatest living masters of the classical guitar.

CONCERT REVIEW“ Such a program of often-heard works can be welcome if the performance is extraordinary. This was indeed the case with Scheherazade. The masterful conducting of the American Ryan McAdams impressively highlighted the work’s abundant tone colors, produced flexible, fresh-sounding tempi that had nothing mechanical about them, never leaving a dull moment, and created immense dramatic tension.”— THE JERUSALEM POST
IMPORTThe Brabant Ensemble, better known for uncovering works by forgotten composers such as Dominique de Phinot, turns to a giant of the Renaissance — perhaps the most celebrated name of the period. Yet within Palestrina’s huge output there are many hidden gems, lacking both recordings and modern performing editions, and it is from among these that the ensemble’s director Stephen Rice has chosen the repertoire for this album. A Mass — Missa Ad coenam Agni, from Palestrina’s first book of mass-settings — is included, plus antiphons, motets and five Eastertide Offertories. Each work is, as conductor Stephen Rice states in his typically informative booklet notes, “a finely crafted addition to the liturgy.” The Brabant Ensemble brings their dependably matchless blend of musicianship, scholarship and sensitive singing to this glorious music.

IMPORTMarc-André Hamelin has proven himself — in three highly lauded volumes of Haydn’s piano sonatas — to be a formidable Haydn pianist, combining style, exuberance and dazzling technique with a palpable sense of joy in the music. This release is the fruit of a partnership with the award-winning Canadian chamber orchestra Les Violons du Roy and their director Bernard Labadie, whose previous recordings for Virgin Classics and other labels have received the highest critical acclaim. With his scintillating performances of Haydn’s three most popular Piano Concertos, Hamelin further demonstrates his special affinity for this repertoire.

IMPORTStrauss’s tone poem Don Quixote, subtitled “Fantastic variations on a theme of knightly character,” is one of the composer’s most popular works, principally because of the beautifully drawn central characters of the Don (performed by a solo cellist) and Sancho Panza (performed by a solo violist). These complex roles are luxuriously portrayed in this new recording by Hyperion artists Alban Gerhardt and Lawrence Power. The merry tale of Till Eulenspiegel completes the program, which features The Gürzenich-Orchester Köln — the very orchestra that gave the premieres of both works in the 1890s — conducted by Markus Stenz, who has held the position of Principal Conductor since 2003.

IMPORTThis 59th volume of the Romantic Piano Concerto series features Jonathan Plowright, whose brilliant and utterly idiomatic performances of Romantic Polish piano music have confirmed him as a master of this repertoire. Here he collaborates with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Lukasz Borowicz to perform three very obscure but fascinating works. The music of Zelenski has already been championed by Plowright in a disc of Polish chamber music; now he performs his Piano Concerto in E flat major, which was written in 1903 and dedicated to the young Ignacy Friedman, who gave the premiere the following year. A Piano Concerto in A flat major by Aleksander Zarzycki is also included, plus his barnstorming Grande Polonaise, an outrageous masterpiece that is unknown even in specialist piano circles.

IMPORTPreviously Available as CDA 67110 (034571171104) Deleted February 2009Fanny Mendelssohn, Felix’s older sister, has been long and unjustly overlooked as a serious composer, despite a considerable and impressive output. She was writing music at a time when it was considered unsuitable for a woman from the upper middle classes to have ambitions as a professional musician. Despite her gifts and desire for recognition, throughout most of her life Fanny respected the prevailing conventions, accepting the prescribed role of a cultivated German woman of the time. This mid-priced reissue featuring soprano Susan Gritton and pianist Eugene Asti is devoted to 29 of her beautiful songs, most recorded here for the first time.
IMPORTPreviously Available as CDA 67295 (034571172958) Deleted April 2010Aleksandr Grechaninov is more widely known for his liturgical music and songs. Until recently, his works in other genres were rarely performed or recorded. Grechaninov’s chamber music in particular is wholly undeserving of the neglect that has befallen it. There are ten major pieces of chamber music by Grechaninov: four string quartets, two clarinet sonatas, a violin sonata and three Piano Trios, which are presented here by the Moscow Rachmaninov Trio. These lesser-known works reveal that Grechaninov’s wide-ranging and creative artistry rivals that of his better-known compatriot composers more commonly represented on disc and in the concert hall.

IMPORTTranscribing his compositions for different forces was probably easy enough for Johann Sebastian Bach. The source of the sound didn’t matter, because for the master of Leipzig, what counted were the thought and the intellect. The form of the work, the tonality and the melodic contours were more important than the instruments involved. In an era concerned with exchanges between the different European schools, musicians were allowed (even expected) to copy, transcribe and adapt the work of their contemporaries. Over the centuries, many composers have adapted Bach’s organ, orchestral and choral music. On this chamber music recording, the Ensemble Contraste presents its own vision that never betrays Bach’s conception but allows the arabesques, lyricism, rigorous construction and complex polyphony to shine through.
IMPORTOne of the most important Spanish pianists today, Joaquín Achúccaro has made his mark with recordings of Granados’s Goyescas and Falla’s Nights in the Gardens of Spain. However, one would be remiss to categorize him as merely a specialist in Spanish music since German music by composers such as Beethoven, Brahms and Schumann features prominently in his repertoire. Extraordinarily attentive to the specificities of Schumann’s rhythms, Achúccaro’s recording of the Fantaisie and the Kreisleriana highlights the essence of these works, made even more fascinating by the exceptional richness of his touch.

IMPORTAndré Caplet is probably best known today for his work as Debussy’s orchestrator. However, he was also a fine composer in his own right, beating out none other than Maurice Ravel to win the Grand Prix du Rome in 1901. Le Miroir de Jésus is his spiritual masterpiece. The work, a setting of poems by Henri Ghéon, is cast in three sections devoted to Jesus’s birth, passion and resurrection. Its orchestration is quite unusual, with a mezzo-soprano soloist accompanied by a female chorus, harp and string quartet. With this innovative work, Caplet is revealed as an important transitional composer between Debussy and Messiaen. Mezzo Marie-Claude Chappuis is the featured soloist.
IMPORTBorn in the final years of the reign of Elizabeth I, Henry Lawes lived through the troubled times of 17th century England. Brother of the charismatic but short lived William Lawes (1602-45), he was acknowledged in his day as one of the finest composers for the voice. This recording features a fascinating collection of his Ayres, performed by the French ensemble La Rêveuse. With his extended vocal ranges, expressive melodic formulas, vibrant dissonances and the highly poetic texts, Lawes was a subtle painter of the melancholy of his age, earning a place between John Dowland and Henry Purcell.

IMPORTAt the dawn of the twentieth century, the vibrations of colors and light found on the canvases of Monet, Seurat and their contemporaries were transmuted into sounds in the output of Debussy, whose String Quartet opened the way to a new aesthetic. Ten years later Ravel was to crystallize its style, as if to follow Debussy’s conception through to its conclusion. Between these two jewels of the French repertoire the Modigliani Quartet performs Saint-Saëns’ String Quartet No.1, revealing it as a tremendously appealing work, brimming with charm, humor and elegance.
IMPORTThis collection of works for piano duet by Bizet, Fauré, Debussy and Ravel evokes the colorful and naïve universe of the child. Much more than mere salon pieces, these charming works transport the listener to the land of dreams. Performed here by the impressive four-hands duo of Claire Désert and Emmanuel Strosser, they are tender, sensuous, touching and sincere. Repertoire includes Fauré’s Dolly, Bizet’s Jeux d’enfants, Debussy’s Petite Suite and Ravel’s Ma mère l’Oye.

IMPORTOnyx presents a Scarlatti recital with a twist. Joseph Moog has assembled a fascinating survey of Scarlatti Sonatas that also includes a selection of the 18th-century master’s works as re-composed by some of the giants of the piano keyboard from the 19th and 20th centuries. The drama contained in Scarlatti’s short, one-movement sonatas has always exerted a hold over both musicians and listeners. The development of the piano in the 19th century provided too great a temptation for composer pianist Carl Tausig, a rival of Chopin and star pupil of Liszt, to ignore these works. He, along with Ignaz Friedman exploited the drama and poetry in Scarlatti’s music, using the new grand piano to its full extent. Walter Gieseking’s Chaconne, a fantastical composition on a theme by Scarlatti, forms the centerpiece of Moog’s unique and fascinating recital.

DOMESTICIn this new recording made at Canada’s famous Glenn Gould Studio at the CBC in Toronto, conductor and Phi l ip Glass champion Anne Manson leads pianist Michael Riesman and her own Manitoba Chamber Orchestra in a tour de force performance of Glass’s Oscar nominated music from The Hours and a virtuosic performance of Glass’s Symphony No.3. Riesman, conductor and pianist on the original soundtrack recording of The Hours, was commissioned in 2002 to create a concert piece based on the score. Glass’s third symphony was written in 1995 for the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra and is one of the composer’s most performed and accessible concert works. This recording shows off the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra’s versatility, especially in the quick paced second and fourth movements, as well as the ensemble’s silky interpretation of the many-layered voices of the third movement, all under the precise direction of Manson.

IMPORTTahra’s compilation L’Art d’André Cluytens presents three previously unreleased live recordings by the great Franco-Belgian conductor dating from the late 1950s and all featuring the Orchestre National de France. Emil Gilels is the soloist in Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No.1 and Walter Gieseking takes the lead in Franck’s Symphonic Variations. The disc concludes with a wonderfully atmospheric reading of Debussy’s three Nocturnes.
IMPORTHerbert Eimert (1897-1972) was a German music theorist, musicologist and composer. Eimert, a fervent disciple of Arnold Schönberg, felt strongly that his mentor’s 12-tone ideal could be best achieved through the use of electronics. This classic reissue from Wergo’s influential Studio Reihe series features Epitaph, Eimert’s powerfully emotional spoken-word based tribute to Japanese fisherman Aikichi Kuboyama, who died of radiation poisoning incurred when the first hydrogen bomb was tested in the South Pacific in 1954. Eimert’s Sechs Studien, was derived from the same source material, but uses only abstract musical sounds in a spectrum where the spoken word can no longer be recognized.

DOMESTICSACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSDFile in: RockAnalogue Productions proudly presents an audiophile SACD remaster of the Counting Crows’s superb début album August and Everything After. The album’s eleven tracks, masterfully produced by T Bone Burnett, were like an intimate song cycle — marrying post-punk with old-school jams in a magical blend that appealed to fans of both alternative and classic rock in equal measure. Riding high on the success of mega-hits like “Mr. Jones” and “Rain King,” the album quickly went multi-platinum. Twenty years on, the album still holds up well. Channeling legends like Van Morrisson, The Band and Dylan, Counting Crows crafted a recipe for success that will no doubt reserve them a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. An interesting bit of trivia — the album’s cover depicts handwritten lyrics to a song called “August and Everything After,” but the band decided against featuring the song on the album. First played at one of their live concerts, fans had to wait for over a decade to finally hear it.

IMPORTFile in: JazzWith four releases on the legendary John Zorn’s alt-Jewish label Tzadik, Koby Israelite has been called prolific, genius and avant-garde. The Israeli-born South Londoner’s musical journey has included everything from classical piano to speed metal drumming. At heart he is a man after a good tune and it doesn’t matter whether that tune is inspired by Black Sabbath, Beethoven or Bucharest Gypsies. At times hauntingly beautiful, Koby’s music is expressed on plaintive Armenian duduk and wistful accordion, connecting his love of Balkan music with the blues. Featuring vocals by the mellifluous Mor Karbasi and the edgy Annique, Blues from Elsewhere is a collision of styles and influences that coheres around a unique musical vision that is daringly powerful and strangely sweet.

IMPORTFile in: World / ArgentinaA monument of South-American music, author, singer, guitarist and composer Atahualpa Yupanqui (1908-1992) was born Hector Roberto Chavero in Pergamino, a province of Buenos Aires. He took a stage name that paid tribute to two Incan rulers and became a revolutionary who studied indigenous cultures. His ethnographic work became internationally known; he performed with Edith Piaf and his compositions were later recorded by the likes of Mercedes Sosa. Yupanqui is considered the most important Argentine folk musician of the 20th century, and this 1982 album, Buenas Noches, Compatriotas, reissued here on Fremeaux, is now considered a historical recording.
IMPORTFile in: World / ArgentinaWhen Raúl Barboza first settled in France in 1987, he quickly came to the realization that he could not classify himself in any musical genre. The Buenos Aires born accordionist’s music represented a unique global mix of Indian, European and African influences, incorporating everything from tangos to mazurkas and waltzes. The recipient of a Konex Prize as one of the five Best Figures in the History of Argentinean Popular Music, Barboza continues to explore new paths on his latest recording, on which he partners with Argentine classical guitarist Juanjo Dominguez.
