How can social bonds prevent
RAPE?The most ignored
measure against gender based violence
RAPE is
UNIVERSAL
Simply because…
Until recently-
We considered gender based violence to be a women’s issue.
We highlight the victimization of women and create programs of self defense and trainings for women to teach them ‘how to protect themselves’
But…
What about men?Perpetrator needs fixing, not the
victim
Andmost
importantly
What about the male victims of rape?
Did you know that in the UK alone, around 72,000 males are sexually assaulted every year?
That is more than 1 in 10 RAPES
1 in 7 women students experienced a serious physical or sexual assault during their time as a student.
Other research by NUS Wales found that 30% of male Welsh students felt that a woman was partially to blame for being raped if she was
drunk or wearing revealing clothing.
RAPE is
UNIVERSALIt hurts us all
It is NOT a women’s issue
but rather a humanitarian issue
Connection between social
bonds aka friendship and RAPE
prevention
Abraham Lincoln once said,
“I destroy my enemies by
making them my friends”.
In a closed circuit environment such as a college campus
Rapists
#1 Please note the majority group is that of the bystanders- imagine their power to influence
positive change
Rapists
#2 Closed circuit groups mean close bonds where students share private information meaning higher risk
for rapists to be caught and socially confronted
Rapists
#3 It is SMARTER to socialize and travel in groups (collective power against potential threats)
Rapists
#4 Inter gender friendship eliminates the ‘alien-isation’ of the opposite gender and focuses on common goals
Rapists
Rape is as much a men’s issue as it is a
women’s issue because it affects
both genders equally
Divided we are vulnerableTogether, we are invincible
Please prevent what’s preventable
