know.• LinkedIn is a professional site which gets results.

• 43 million members across the globe.• Nearly 2 million in the UK.• Members in 200 countries across 7 continents.• Average user age is 41.• £0 to join.

Why

• Increased contacts.• Increased new business.• Build an online profile.• Connect with like minded business people.• Get referrals.• Linked in can eliminate ‘cold calling’.• For free / nominal cost.

A Typical Profile

Starting up• Build a profile.• Add a picture.• Add your career history.• Create a summary of your business.• Join relevant groups.• Connect with people you know.• Your profile can be seen by anyone. Make sure it is

professional and gets the message across.• Link to your website / blog etc.• Keep your profile updated. People are inherently nosey and

you will gain trust.

Connecting

• Upload your contacts from your address book.• Connect with old colleagues / class mates.• Who do you want to connect with?• What role are they in?• Are they in a specific sector?• Are you location specific?• Look at your connections network.

Groups

• Join relevant groups.• Be an active member.• Use the discussion groups.• Remember, all members can see what you write!• Use the groups to promote your business without being too

pushy.• Become an expert on your chosen subject.• Make your own!

Tips / Hints• Be proactive.• Don’t be too pushy.• Make sure you have a strong proposition statement.• Use Linked In as a research tool / a way of getting your foot in

the door.• Invest some time every week to show activity. (Friday

afternoons?).• Use the groups to ask for advise. (Like Vistage View).• Use Linked In to headhunt / reference check / post vacancies.• Always conduct yourself professionally. This is no different to

a phone call or face-face meeting.
