garbagepick-up,waterandsewerservices,thetotalincreaseintaxesandfeestotheaveragehomeownerisabout$39.19.ToseewheretheCityis

ThankstotheProvinceofBritishColumbia,theNorthCaribooMulti-Centreis$4millionclosertoreality.Cariboo-ChilcotinMLADonnaBarnettwasinQuesnelonApril14tomaketheannouncement.Amongtheprovince’sprimereasonsforfundingtheprojectarecreatingjobs,ahealthiercommunityandsafeenvironmentsforactivity.
NowtheCaribooRegionalDistrictandCityofQuesnel
continuetolobbythefederalgovernmentforfunding.TheMulti-CentreFundraisingCommitteehasalsoputtogetheracomprehensivefundraisingstrategytosecurecorporateandgrass-rootsfundingcontributions.
Todate,thereferendumallowsborrowingupto$15million,withanadditional$2millioncomingfromtheNorthernDevelopmentInitiativeTrust.Addtothattheprovince’s$4millionandthe
fundingavailablesitsatabout$21millionofthe$30millionneeded.
TheNorthCaribooMulti‐Centrewillbeamodernfacilitydesignedtoreplaceaginginfrastructure.Itfeaturesa1,600-seatNHL‐sizedarena,a450‐seatperformingartstheatreandaccompanyingeventandassemblyspace.

North-CentralregionofBritishColumbiawillvisitQuesnelin2013forthe58thNorthCentralLocalGovernmentAssociation(NCLGA)AnnualGeneralMeetingandConvention.TheconferencetakesplacefromMay1to3,2013,withmorethan250delegatesexpectedtoconvergeontheGoldpanCity.
• 2011Airportstatisticsareout.Therewere14,095commercialpassengersattheairport,anincreaseof8.6%over2010.Outof904scheduledcommercialflightsin2011,2.6%(24)weredivertedlandingsduetoweather.
• TheArtsandRecreationCentreannualmaintenanceshutdownwillbeSeptember3to16.ThedatehasbeenchangedbacktoSeptemberfromDecemberbasedontheresultsofapublicsurveyandusergrouprequests.Thetwo-weekshutdownisnecessarytoperformannualmaintenanceonthepoolbasinandmechanicalsystems.Thefrontdesk,gym,andartscentrewillbeopenwithareducedscheduleduringtheshutdownperiod.
• SwimmersshouldnoticewaterqualityimprovementintheswimmingpoolsattheArtsandRecreationCentreafteranewUltraVioletwatertreatmentsystemwasinstalledthiswinter.TheUVSystemusesultravioletlampstoreducetheaccumulationofchlorinetreatmentbyproductsandhelpsdisinfectthepool.TheUVsystemreducesskinandeyeirritationandchlorineodor.Theexistingdrytabletchlorinesystemstillprovidesresidualdisinfectantinthepoolwater;howeverchlorinelevelshavebeenreducedsincetheUVsystemwasinstalled.TheUVsystemalsomakesthepoolaferbydestroyingpotentiallyharmfulmicro-organismsthatcancontaminatethepool.

Fundraising efforts continue
TheourQuesnel:SustainabilityinActionprocessiswellunderwayaftertheCityreceiveda$100,000grantfromtheInnovationsFundoftheGasTaxAgreement.
Quesnelisdevelopingacomprehensive,community-wide,long-termsustainabilityvision,plan,andprocessthroughtheinitiative.Itismeanttoincludeasmanycommunitymembersandorganizationsasarewillingtoparticipate.
Fromcommunityoutreach,surveysandworkshopstoopenhousesandpublicinformationcampaigns,theCity’sSustainabilityTaskForce
iscollectinginputandactionideasdesignedtoenvisionQuesnel’sfutureagenerationfromnow.
Thestrategyareasbeingdiscussedinclude:economy,
work,educationandskillstraining;transportationandmobility;energy,water,resourcesandwaste;food;socialandcommunitywell-being;ecosystems,naturalareasandparks;communicationsandconnectivityinfrastructure;buildingsandsites;arts,culture,recreationandleisure;andhousingandlanduse.

Community championsLiz Miller is the 2011 Volunteer Citizen of the Year. She spearheads the Miss Quesnel Self Development Program and plays an integral role in the program, which exists to help young women develop self-esteem and leadership skills. She attends dozens of community events each year with the candidates, and promotes education, community volunteerism and personal skills development in the program’s participants.Life-long community resident and former City Councillor Peter Couldwell received the Lifetime Achievement Award. He was noted as being a humanitarian with passion and enthusiasm who has spent thousands of hours volunteering his time as an auctioneer to raise funds for a wide variety of causes around Quesnel. The Quesnel Volunteer Citizen of the Year program is a joint venture of the City of Quesnel and the Quesnel Cariboo Observer.

• SwimmersshouldnoticewaterqualityimprovementintheswimmingpoolsattheArtsandRecreationCentreafteranewUltraVioletwatertreatmentsystemwasinstalledthiswinter.TheUVSystemusesultravioletlampstoreducetheaccumulationofchlorinetreatmentbyproductsandhelpsdisinfectthepool.TheUVsystemreducesskinandeyeirritationandchlorineodor.Theexistingdrytabletchlorinesystemstillprovidesresidualdisinfectantinthepoolwater;howeverchlorinelevelshavebeenreducedsincetheUVsystemwasinstalled.TheUVsystemalsomakesthepoolaferbydestroyingpotentiallyharmfulmicro-organismsthatcancontaminatethepool.

Quesnelisdevelopingacomprehensive,community-wide,long-termsustainabilityvision,plan,andprocessthroughtheinitiative.Itismeanttoincludeasmanycommunitymembersandorganizationsasarewillingtoparticipate.
