The Putnam County Chamber of Commerce held its Inaugural Fall Harvest Open on Friday, October 11 at Sleepy Hollow Golf Club with 22 teams participating. Congratulations to the winning team, who was sponsored by Dow. Second place was awarded to Pioneer WV FCU and third place was claimed by North American Industrial Services. Congratulations to The Putnam Standard
Chamber Business of the Month for November!
The Putnam Standard is the relatively new name for a business that has spent
generations covering what is happening in people’s hometowns. Once known as
The Putnam Democrat and Putnam Post, The Putnam Standard name was
adopted in 2007. That name continues to be used today, while several of the
former Post and Democrat employees work to keep the legacy of those
newspapers alive and well.
The Putnam Standard recently underwent another ownership change as Chris and
Kelly Stadelman of Stadelman Publishing LLC purchased the company from Bill
Unger. Their goal is to build on the work that Unger and his dedicated staff
members were doing and expand coverage throughout the county.
In addition to the Stadelmans, staff members include Trudy Black, Michelle
Jividen, David Miller, Thelma Hutchinson and Justin Waybright. Several
freelance writers have joined the team, and more contributions are always welcome.
The Putnam Standard office is at 3845B Teays Valley Road, and the phone number is 304-743-6731.
Kelly serves as president of the company, while Chris is the publisher. They’re both also involved in Stadelman
Consulting, a research and public affairs company that works throughout West Virginia and surrounding states.
Stadelman Publishing also owns The Cabell Standard, which focuses on the eastern portion of Cabell County.
“Chris and I are passionate about newspapers, community journalism in particular,” Kelly said. “While we will
never shy away from covering important and controversial stories, we understand that what people want is an
accurate reflection of their community. We will spend most of our time covering people where they live – their
schools, athletic fields, churches and similar gathering places.”
“We appreciate the history of both publications and look forward to embracing that while also making changes
where appropriate,” Chris said. “We will maintain and enhance our already active websites,
www.theputnamstandard.com and www.thecabellstandard.com, have added Facebook pages for each
newspaper, and we plan to soon add Twitter accounts to the way we communicate with readers.”
Both Stadelmans have previous weekly newspaper experience, formerly owning The Parsons Advocate in
Tucker County. In addition, Chris worked at the Charleston Daily Mail from 1994 to 2004, serving as business
editor, city editor, managing editor and a weekly columnist.
Putnam County is a vibrant, growing community with outstanding schools and a tremendous business base. The
goal of The Putnam Standard is to be the No. 1 information source throughout the county, including news,
features, advertising and social media.

Fruth Pharmacy Flu Shot Program - The Putnam County Chamber of Commerce and Fruth Pharmacy are pleased to announce a partnership to benefit area employers and their employees. If you are an employer in Putnam County, you might be worried how this year’s flu will affect your workforce. On average, a worker will miss 4-5 days of work due to the flu. The Putnam Chamber of Commerce has partnered with Fruth Pharmacy in order to provide two different programs to enable employees to receive flu shot vaccinations. In addition to savings on flu shots, the Putnam Area Chamber of Commerce is also bringing a Prescription Savings Club card through Fruth Pharmacy to area employers and employees. The prescription card is not insurance, but can help save the cardholder on the purchase of generic and brand medications. There is no cost to employees or employers to enroll. Employees present the card to a Fruth pharmacist the first time they have a prescription filled. The employee can enroll all eligible family members (spouse and children) at that time. Some medications are $4 for 30-day supply or $10 for a 90-day supply. The generics list is updated once a month on Fruth Pharmacy’s website: www.fruthpharmacy.com. Please contact Ashley at the Putnam Chamber of Commerce and request, either Program 1 or Program 2 flu cards for your business. Be sure to also request the Prescription Discount cards for your staff.
Express Employment to host HOLIDAY HIRING DRIVE: Give the gift of employment by joining Express Employment Professionals’ Pay It Forward Holiday Hiring Drive as they strive to place 400 job seekers in Kanawha & Putnam counties during the weeks of Monday, Nov. 4 – Sunday, Dec. 15th. They also plan to Pay It Forward even further by raising money for The Salvatin Army – Angel Tree Charity in the process! For every associate placed during the drive Express Employment will donate $10 to the Angel Tree Charity, which provides gifts and clothing to children during the holiday season. How can you help? 1. The Putnam County Chamber of Commerce, Putnam County Rotary and the Putnam County Parks and Recreation “Celebrate Putnam” Luncheon will take place on November 19th at the Commons of Putnam County from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The cost of lunch is $15 per person. This event serves as an opportunity to gratefully acknowledge significant events and community progress in Putnam County during the past year. The general public is encouraged to attend this special luncheon. Putnam County is hosting the sixth annual Veterans Appreciation Day Sunday afternoon, November 10, 2013 at the County Courthouse in Winfield. It will begin at 2 PM and feature tributes to men and women who have worn their country’s uniform through the years. The tribute will be held on the courthouse parking lot, feature live music by the Winfield Generals Band, recognition of veterans present, and ceremonies featuring the American Legion, VFW, and Marine Corps League. Veterans, their families and friends are encouraged to attend. Putnam residents are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs and spend an hour honoring the veterans still with us and remembering the fallen to whom we owe so much. Marketing Tip: Taking A Client To Lunch? Avoid These Mistakes. It may be somewhat of a lost art, but a business lunch is one of the best ways to connect with your clients and earn more
business. No doubt, technology helps us stay in touch more frequently, but it will never replace the face time provided by
taking your clients out to lunch.
The service staff in Putnam and Kanawha county restaurants are getting to know me on a first name basis. I spend a lot of
time looking across restaurant tables while sharing vision and strategies with potential and current clients. Here are some
things I recommend NOT doing when you meet with your customers or clients over lunch:
Don't hassle over the check. If you've asked a client out to lunch, always pay. Better yet, discreetly give the server your
credit card before your guest arrives to avoid a potentially awkward situation when the check comes at the end of the
meal.
Don't try out the latest, greatest restaurant. A client lunch isn't the time to try out a new establishment and risk bad
service or bad food. Choose a restaurant familiar to you. Nothing is more impressive than being greeted by name when
you enter a restaurant.
Try not to cancel or reschedule. Before asking a client to lunch, check your calendar twice — and then again. Plans do
change, but changing your plans at the last minute because you accidentally overbooked or accepted a better offer will
make you look careless and disorganized.
Don't order first. Allow your client to order first, then follow his or her lead. If your client orders just a salad and a glass
of iced tea, follow suit. Don't go overboard and order a five-course meal.
Avoid poor table manners. You're not a barbarian; you're an entrepreneur. Basic manners are a must. A business meal
should be more about the business and less about the meal.
Don’t be disinterested during the conversation. Get to know your client through dynamic conversation. Ask open-
ended questions. Be interested and interesting and the conversation will flow organically.
Don't check your phone. Your email can wait. Turn your phone on silent and leave it in your pocket or handbag. You
may have trained yourself to respond to every beep and buzz, but give your client your undivided attention.
Remember, marketing is more than just words on a page or the colors of your logo. Its about relationships and trust. The
way in which you respect and honor your clients over lunch will go a long way toward creating and establishing your
“brand” as a competent and caring professional.
