DFM FOR THE IOT
DFM – TIED TO A PRODUCT’S COMMERCIAL SUCCESS(OR “HOW TO AVOID OPERATION SUCCESSFUL BUT
PATIENT DIED” SYNDROME)
• DFM (and DFX) is central to the complete Product Life Cycle
• Development, Production, Utilization and Disposal
• Identified by the “–ility’s” e.g.
• Usability - Industrial / Human factor design / “Design Thinking”
• Manufacturability - Production cost
• Reliability - Service life/Operating cost
• Serviceability - Downtime/Cost
• Recyclability - Environmental impact/Cost
• In the IoT context, the products in both Industrial and Consumer
• Wide applicability => larger technology ecosystem need
• Where do we focus => Arvind’s Grand challenges (market linked)
LESSONS LEARNED…• Among those who applied - Limited Hardware background
• For those who do have: unable to get to rapid design-prototype-test-deploy-feedback-refine cycle
critical for innovation in manufactured products
• Months instead of days-weeks
• Entrepreneurs adopting Software-on-COTS strategy here itself (not DFM!)
• Components availability is a challenge
• Designer’s compromise on component selection or manufacturing process just to keep the ball
rolling compromising DFM
• Appreciating great products (we buy’em all the time) not translating to rigorousness in DFM
• Low expectations of being able to “Make it in India”
• Target price Vs cost of product engineering/development vs Manufacturing for low volume ( 200-500pcs)
a challenge.
• No culture of designing to standards in local ecosystem
• getting product to work and commercialize is an achievement in itself
• Further sticker shock when cost of DFM is estimated -> drop-off at this stage ( perhaps lack of
further funding commitment from seed – is it too small?)
• Workgroups being more proactive than the startups – what does it mean?
• essential to establish a feedback or central monitoring system to check on progress and
bottlenecks
• Thanks to our entrepreneurs who while applying to the scheme are doggedly pursuing their plans
STRATEGY LOOKING FORWARD..• Short Term ( 0-6 months):
• Entrepreneur education on “How-to-Start-an-IoT-Product”
• use-cases are intuitive, but product development is a different ball-game!
• Draft DFM Guide prepared and ready to be pushed to the website BETA
• More Mentors needed, esp. with knowledge of current (and locally available) manufacturing
techniques
• Medium term (6-12 months):
• Identify/Co-Opt service providers willing to work on early stage design/ prototyping
• Tie-Up with existing MSME tool rooms and upcoming Incubation center
• Long term (1 year+) :
• Dedicated Prototype Labs with state of the art prototype manufacturing equipment and systems
setup with global consultative support
• “Markets” will hopefully be ready by then
• Institutionalize the relationship and processes for product development between tool rooms,
MSME clusters and entrepreneurs
• pull back product validation time from months-years to weeks-months
Deliver as a closed loop system with Mentor being the contact point for workgroups and startups

INTEROPERABILITY AND STANDARDS
FOR THE IOT
INTEROPERABILITY AND STANDARDS• One of the complex areas at the conceptual stage itself and sometimes very difficult to plan
• Choice as well as no choice
• Difficult to set long term view and adaptation of suitable standards
• Difficulties in compliance and certification
• No single decision making bodies in industrial sector
• Consumer space is driven by existing technologies integrated in smart devices
• Early applications are smart energy (AMR->AMI->Smart Grid) and smart lighting
• Emerging and close to high volume implementations like home/building automation are in the form
of proprietary implementations
• Other applications like parking, tracking, sensing, sewage etc are still far off
• Major efforts by IEEE and IETF
• Choice of consortiums
INTEROPERABILITY AND STANDARDSLEARNINGS
• Choice of standards by most of the startups is limited to the access to the technology or the ease of
integration.
• Standardization is not perceived to be essential unless the architecture or the basic feature of the
products calls for the integration of standard protocols.
• Use of Wifi or GSM/GPRS : Already standardized with internet protocols
• The confusion of technology is mostly around RF technologies to be used and unfortunately, the industry
or the country is still experimenting and eventually there would be multiple standards
• Interoperability is not considered as a necessity; as each company is focusing their own offerings
at this stage. The diverse set of products and solutions out there in market are not expected to be
working together.
• There were hardly any questions or help sought regarding the interoperability and couple of
questions related to standards turned out to be related to testing and certification.
INTEROPERABILITY AND STANDARDSMOVING FORWARD
• Effort is on to get more frequency allocation in Sub-
GHz range, from WPC
• Various standardizations bodies like IEEE, WiSUN are
working hard to push their standards. Zigbee and
other variants of 6LoWPAN exist as well.
• To have technical sessions on these aspects
INTEROPERABILITY AND STANDARDSSUGGESTIONS
• Merge the interoperability and standards work group with testing
and certification?
• In addition to the focus on few selected companies, let it be a
wider platform where any company (need not be start up) can
register and pose question to a particular work group of their
interest.
• Involve other workgroup/s, based on necessity
• All those companies need not be closely monitored for their success
• Monthly update on any such interactions may be provided to all
Any Questions?
