It has been a big semester at QIBT, and
now is the time to celebrate! In this
edition of qNews we take a look back over
what has happened at QIBT in semester 2
2012.
In June we welcomed back our returning
students as well as a whole lot of brand
new QIBT-ers, and the action hasn’t let up
since then.
We started off the semester with a huge
orientation program and then launched into our
packed Activities Calendar, providing all
students with a range of opportunities to get
involved.
Inside these pages we have photos and
summaries from all our big activities and events
so have a look through and see if you are
featured anywhere.
And for those of you who graduate this
semester we say Goodbye and Good Luck!

Issue 2, Semester 2 2012

Semester 2 Overview - June
Orientation: Orientation is one of the busiest times at QIBT and this semester was no different. Spread over one whole week and across two campuses, staff and Student Mentors were flat out welcoming new
students and helping them adjust to their new surrounds.
This semester every new student came to two days
of orientation. This not only made the whole process a lot more relaxed and less stressful, but it gave students more opportunities to check out their
campus, meet fellow students and - very importantly - get their photo taken at our Orientation Photo Booth!
Student Mentors are returning students who give up
their own time over their holidays to come back to QIBT to help out new students. We couldn’t have orientation without them and their efforts are always appreciated. Check your email around the end of each semester to see how you can get involved.
Semester 2 Overview - July
SLC: The Student Liaison Committee is a vital part of QIBT, and this semester’s Committees have done a fantastic job of representing their fellow students. With one Committee at each campus there has been no shortage of work for the SLC Ambassadors, who
have sat on Committee meetings, helped to organise activities and events and consulted their fellow students to see what they can improve around
campus. A big thank you must go out to all of our
Ambassadors for their hard work this semester. If you would like to become an SLC Ambassador next semester keep an eye out for posters in the first few weeks of semester.

Friendship Ceremony: On Wednesday 19 July a number of QIBT students were invited to attend the first ever Lord Mayor’s International Student Friendship Ceremony. The Ceremony recognised international students who have made a special contribution to life in Brisbane. Students from QIBT
received nominations for contributing to campus life during their time with us, and were treated to a speech by the Lord Mayor and networking opportunities with Brisbane business leaders after the event.
Congratulations to all of those who attended.
QIBT vs GELI Soccer: In late July a soccer team of QIBT students took on a team from the Griffith English Language Institute (GELI) for the second time in a few months. After a tough loss in Semester 1 QIBT were determined to regain their honour on the soccer pitch this time around.
Two short games were played and after both of them ended with scores tied there was only one option: the penalty shootout. With the help of some sharp shooting and brilliant goalkeeping QIBT managed to take out the shootout with a score of 5 - 3. Thanks
very much to the participants from each side who came down to play, and congratulations to the QIBT
side!
Semester 2 Overview - August
Mini Olympics: The London Olympic Games officially kicked off at the very end of July, and QIBT had two big barbecues and our own ‘mini-Olympics’ just before the mid semester study break in order to celebrate.
Students at both campuses had the opportunity to
win prizes in games of mini-basketball, mini-soccer and a water bomb throwing competition.
Although a few students got a little bit soaked due to water bomb mishaps, everyone involved had a great time!
4
Academic Scholarship Winners: In August QIBT was very pleased to announce the winners of two very important academic prizes.
Yusuf Abdali Abdulhusain Al Wazeer was the recipient of the QIBT Academic Merit Scholarship for Semester
1 2012, and Gang Hyun Choe was the recipient of the same award for Semester 2 2012.
Congratulations to both of these students on their fantastic achievements!
Need some help? Are you struggling with your classes or study
load? Are you struggling to establish your friendship network? Don’t stress – QIBT PALS are here to help you! QIBT PALS are a group of more experienced students who can help you out with any academic or cultural issues you may be experiencing.
They’re a friendly bunch and always more than happy to help or provide some guidance. For more information on study assistance, visit the student support site at: www.studentsupport.qibt.qld.edu.au
Semester 2 Overview - September
Footy Colours: In early September QIBT teamed up with the Fight Cancer Foundation in order to raise money for charity and to raise awareness of this important issue.
Staff and students were encouraged to dress up, donate money and have a lot of fun at the same time. Students contributed a gold coin donation for
the sausage sizzle and prizes were given out for the best scores in the rugby target game and soccer sharpshooting.
Due to the generosity of QIBT staff and students the two barbecues raised just over $170 to go towards cancer research. Thanks to everyone who donated!

Past Student Profile
Meet one of our most recent and successful graduates, Desiree Kelly…
Desiree completed the Diploma of Information Technology at QIBT and she is now a Google Student Ambassador, advocate for Women in IT and full-time Bachelor of Information Technology student at Griffith University.
"I completed my QIBT diploma over two years part-
time, while working full-time as a Business Consultant for Telstra. As I was working forty hours a week, I would only take on up to two subjects at a time. Studying and working full-time was certainly challenging, but with the support of my lecturers at QIBT, this made it a lot easier. As I was at QIBT for so long, I was well known around campus and was always made to feel welcome by being given a sense of belonging from the staff and lecturers. Through the support I received, I was able to receive
the high results that I aimed for and also found some wonderful networking opportunities. As a result, I had the opportunity to apply for the Google Student Ambassador role and work with various groups to support Women in the IT industry. I also received awards from my lecturers for my academic achievements. It was really encouraging to receive recognition for my efforts. I am almost at the end of the second year of my degree. I am really looking forward to the day that a graduate with my degree in Information Technology. It
will be a moment in my life that I will never forget. I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to complete a diploma through QIBT, which enabled me to study my degree at Griffith University. I hope to be able to stand in front of my fellow students again when I receive my degree in Information Technology and share my journey with them.” Just for Fun: 1, A Single Word; 2, Rainbow, Referee, Revenge, Roasted, Rubbish, Running, Retreat, Restore.

Summer Surf Tips
With summer just around the corner and the sun heating up faster than ever, here are some handy beach tips to help you keep your cool this summer…
Be-ach Safe. Swim between the red and yellow flags
The beach is one of Australia’s most important and enjoyable features. Everyone will visit the beach at least once in their life and sometimes as often once a
week or more. It is important that you know how to enjoy the beach safely and above all else, swim between the red and yellow flags.
Be mindful of others by keeping an eye out, especially on children, but most importantly take
care of yourself and be aware of your own ability.
To enjoy the beach safely, remember:
