Dear friends,However you feel about this new year of 2017 may you senseGod’s presence with you to bless and encourage you. Not least inthe truth of our new Church Text may you know each new day thestrength of the Lord for all the opportunities and challenges ahead.

To go with the new text I’ve written a series ‘Be Strong in the Lord’ for ourLifegroups based on the readings from 2 Corinthians. We’ll be following it onSunday mornings from now until Easter. It’s full of teaching about being strongin our weakness, so I think you’ll see why it is so Biblically relevant for us today. It’s also a good time to start going to a renewing your attendance at a Lifegroup.Whether it’s one of the nine that we already have meeting in daytime orevening or the new Bible School Lifegroup beginning to meet at the churchfrom Thursday 19 January, you will be blessed by spending some of your timein this way.Can I also encourage you to think about our new Alpha Course? It’s in thedaytime for those that can make it then and starts on Wednesday 1 Februaryrunning from midday until 2.00pm with a sandwich lunch provided. We’regoing to be using the newly filmed Alpha series from Holy Trinity, Bromptonwhich, as Bear Grylls says, are really excellent. You might like to come yourself, encourage and invite someone else or help us facilitate the Course by preparinglunch, praying for the group or helping us lead the discussions. Do tell Marg ormyself if you can help as we make plans.New Year often brings new resolutions but also hopes and fears. My biggesthope for 2017 is that God will use my ministry at OBC to bring people to faithin Jesus or to grow in their faith. It is just the most wonderful thing to see andbe a part of. So I’m excited about the opportunities and challenges that areahead, but, with you I really need to ‘Be strong in the Lord…’With love in Christ,Martyn

You might be the kind of person who tries to keep theirChristmas decorations up for as long as possible; you love thetinsel, lights and the warmth they bring to your home but I’vebeen looking forward to January for quite a while now. I’m nota humbug but the new year often brings with it an opportunityfor some new and exciting projects.

2017 is the year of our third youth mission trip to Bucharest, Romania (thesecond I will have run). Alongside the trip, which is exciting but still quite faraway, are the events that help share what we’re hoping to do with the widerchurch (they also help fundraise for the trip). One of these is our ‘lifestylechallenge’.

Towards the end of January young people, even those not going on the trip, will be taking part in this awareness/ fundraising challenge which will last aweek. The challenge will focus on our young peoples reliance on media/technology and ask them to give up; Technology for one day, TV, video andchange the background on their computers and phones to remind them of thiscause for the the week. We will be asking members of OBC and friends of theseyoung people to sponsor and support them through this.

The aim of these small sacrifices is to help young people relate to the life ofthose who we will be working with in Romania who don't have access to theluxury items many in the UK fill their lives with. It will also give the young peoplea brilliant opportunity to share what they're doing and why they're doing it totheir peers and friends.

Our trip to Bucharest in 2017 will be from 9th-16th August. We will be workingwith Providence Baptist church, who weare twinned with, alongside their PastorsSorin and Oti. The young people will runa holiday club in the Romany churchplant from Providence we were at twoyears ago as well as doing some outreachand activities with the young peoplefrom Providence at the church.

2016 has gone, as I write this, and for many they are glad to seethe back of it! It has been a year of celebrity deaths, of strangeelection results and our entry into the unknown territory of Brexit. For our fellowship, many have had illness and death to cope with

and are happy to say goodbye to 2016. Looking ahead is what we do aspeople. The beauty of January 1st is that we turn our eyes to 2017 withhope and expectation. The Bible reassures us that Christ is the same;yesterday, today and forever. As Christians we rest our broken lives onthis great promise and face the future with excitement for what God willbring to us.The Treasury completes another year on December 31st and soon theaccounts will go in to be examined and checked to make sure they are atrue record of our last 365 days. We are losing a couple of very importantpeople from our team as this year comes to an end. Anita Uden has beena reliable, efficient and thoroughly wonderful assistant to me and my “righthand woman”. She has done a great job, very consistently, and will besorely missed. Doug Collins, her father, has been counting money andorganising counters over many years and he has given this up as he movesinto “older years”!!People come and go but the work continues. Money still comes in andthen gets spent, laws get changed and need to be observed and the workof God’s Kingdom gets financed in Orpington and throughout the world.Whether you will look back fondly on 2016 or are pleased to see it go, lookto the Lord and have Him as your anchor in an everchanging world. Let’s look forward to 2017 and give ourmoney as part of our worship and see our God dogreat things.Happy Christmas and a great New Year.

I have a Bacharach and David song from the mid-sixties whirlingaround my head: “What the world needs now is love, sweetlove, It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of. What theworld needs now is love, sweet love, No, not just for some but for everyone.”If that seems a bit too sugary for you then remember, the God we worship isdefined simply as “Love”: he who “so loved the world that he gave his onlyson”, and who said the greatest commandments were that you love God andlove Mr and Mrs Awkward over your garden fence. So I’ll opt for love for 2017, but ditch the saccharine because love is hard! It’sbrutal and demanding and yes, its costly! It’ll cost us to see refugees as our problem and love them and actually dosomething. Heavens, we may even need to protest! It’ll be demanding when neighbours need more from us than a cheery waveand a comment about the weather. They may be grieving and they need to be loved too.It may be difficult in the next year to demonstrate your Christian faith in yourschool or in the hospital where you work and not get sacked, but pray that

you’ll find a great way to show how much you love people theretoo. And that’s before we start with the people in church who drive usnuts! “Oh, not them too Lord!” Yup – invite them for Sunday lunch– that’ll do the trick! And it’ll be tough giving enough money away so that God believeswe’re serious about this – but money can be translated into lovefor people who are sick, starving, homeless and trappedin faraway places. So my vote goes for love in 2017 – Christ-likelove.

Tributes to leading Baptist historianBarrie White grew up at OBC and found faith through it's ministry. He went on to be a Baptist Minister and to be the Principal ofRegent's Park College, Oxford where Martyn trained under hisleadership there.

Tributes have been paid to Baptist historian and former Principal of Regent’sPark College, Oxford, the Revd Dr Barrington (Barrie) White, who died on 12November aged 82

Barrie led Regent’s from 1972 to 1989, a period of 'great development andexpansion', according to the College. He has also been described as the'leading Baptist historian of his generation', particularly for his work on Bap-tists in the 17th century.

The Revd Dr Barrie White became Principal at Regent’s Park in 1972 after nineyears as lecturer in Church History: he had previously been minister at Ando-ver Baptist Church. He will be remembered in the College as a Principal whoencouraged his students to aspire to be scholar-pastors, and modelled justthis combination in his own person. A wise and witty man, he was one of theleading scholars in his field of early Baptist history, writing what remains oneof the definitive books on the subject. But he was no aloof scholar - at hearthe remained a pastor, gently encouraging students and colleagues, and with-out any ostentation showing signs of prayerfulness, empathy and compas-sion. While appearing reserved, Barrie was also humane and approachable. His students came to appreciate him deeply.

Following my recent Compassion presentation, I would just like to take theopportunity to say a big thank you to all who sponsored a child throughCompassion. This positive action will transform the life of this child and I amsure that God will bless your love in action for the poor. I want also to thankall who uphold Compassion in prayer, because prayer is a vital part of thisChristian project. May Gods' blessings be with you all in this new year. Beencouraged by these words from 2 Corinthians chapter 9 vs 9-11(NIV)."He has scattered abroad his gifts to the poor; his righteousness endures forever," Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will alsosupply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of yourrighteousness. You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generouson every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgivingto God.Once again thank you for your support.Sonia WildboreCompassion Advocate

Girls’ Brigade – Brigader Section (age 14+)The last term for the Brigaders has been tough atschool due to the dreaded exams. Revisionpermitting, the girls have been participating in theirown Brigader Bake Off. They chose to cook each week, covering a varietyof aspects of baking. They made cake using vegetables, pastries sweet andsavoury, desserts and ending with Mary Berry’s recipe for a GingerbreadHouse. Only one of four stayed standing for more than 5 minutes, but theydid taste good! They also prepared a feast for those sorting the Christmascards for the Church. Well done girls and hopefully some of these skills willbe put into practice at home! The company celebrated Christmas by partying for the Explorers and Juniors,ice-skating for the Seniors and eating (not cooking) for the Brigaders. Weenter the new year with new badgework and new challenges and lookforward to your continuing support.Wishing you all a happy and healthy 2017.Jenny Tompsett

A BIG ISSUEI want to introduce you to alady you may actually haveseen in the street. Her name is Monica and she sells theBig Issue outside what was DorothyPerkins in the High Street. That is when she can get there, because she hasa little girl of about eight who has kidney problems and has already had onekidney removed. Monica and her family come from Romania because thereis no work there. She cannot get a normal job partly because her daughterneeds frequent medical treatment and so selling the Big Issue is her onemeans of making a little money, providing people buy copies. At £3 a copynot everyone is willing. At present she is trying to make enough to pay herrent or they will lose their home.Yes, there are lots of Monica's around and lots of calls on our hard earnedcash but remembering the Good Samaritan, if you see Monica when you arein the High Street, can you I ask you not to pass by on the other side but goand say hello to her, if you can afford it buy a copy of her magazine andmaybe offer her a cup of something hot on a cold day. There are days, Iconfess, when I would rather she was not there, disturbing my consciencebut maybe the Lord put her in our High Street so that we could serve Himand not pass by. Thank you for reading this.Maggy.

In 2017 we will be celebratingthe centenary of the JuniorSection (Juniors), a significantanniversary in the life of our

organisation and one that we hope members will want tocelebrate locally and nationally. Our celebrations will take place across the calendar year, covering both the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 sessions allowing ampleopportunities for local and national events to take place. There will be activities at a Company level that Juniors can participate inincluding the Juniors 100 Challenge, International Team Games, The BIG 100Party, Comic Relief 2017 as well as programme ideas and resources. These willbe alongside national opportunities to celebrate including regional services andevents. We are hoping to take our section to some of these events to join inwith the celebrations. The HistoryUp until 1917 The Boys' Brigade had only catered for Boysaged 12 and over. However, in September 1917, BrigadeCouncil (the governing body of The Boys' Brigade) setupthe Boy Reserves to cater for Boys aged 9 to 12 years ofage. For several years prior to this a number of Companieshad started to take in recruits under twelve, the BoyScouts had done so too from 1916 as Wolf Cubs, and forthis reason there were calls to lower the age limit to accommodate these Boyswithin the Brigade. The uniform adopted by the Boy Reserves was nautical consisting of a sailor'scap, navy blue jersey and shorts. The NCO's working with them too had nauticalranks as petty officers. In the early days of the Boy Reserves there was anoticeable increase in attendance at Sunday School in those churches whichhad adopted the section and the number of Companies operating a Boy Reservesquickly started to grow. By 1918 there were more than 1,500 members of theBoy Reserves across the UK, the section continued to grow through the 1920's.In 1926 The Boys' Brigade Boy Reserves merged with The Boys' LifeBrigade Lifeboys and became known as the Life Boys. With this amalgamationmembership increased to more than 30,000 Boys in the early 1930's and then

SIGNPOST18

to more than 70,000 in the 1950's.When in 1966 the Life Boys became a full part of the Brigade as theJunior Section, a name which, intended to be temporary until a betterone could be thought of, it still holds today; although originally as nowmany often refer to the Boys and Girls of the age group just as Juniors.

Current News from the 3 Bromley CompanyThe Company currently has 12 Anchor Boys, 24 Junior Section Boys and 35boys in the Company and Senior sections. While we are blessed with high

numbers in the higher sections the Anchor Boys could do withnew members, so please pray for opportunities to spread thenews that the BB is out there and has much to offer the youngmen of today! The Junior Section programme for the start of this session hasincluded many activities and experiences that are interestingto boys, including quizzes, themed evenings, craft nights, biblebased evenings, outing to Jump Giants, birds of prey display, swimming, Christmas craft and party. We also spend a lot oftime in the New Year practising for competitions and then ourdisplay.Thank you for any support given to the Company during thepast year.Best wishes for 2017 to all our Church family.

Our own Peter Johnson features in the latest magazine from ReleaseInternational. Peter is a member of our Mission Exec and is the OBCrepresentative for Release.

I’ve gained so muchWhy did you become a Church Representative?I’ve always been concerned for justice issues and human rights , so when Ibecame a Christian it was a natural step to want to do something to helppersecuted Christians.I started writing letters to encourage prisoners, and sometimes to raiseissues with governments, using the information from Release. When I foundout that it was possible to become a Church Representative, this seemed agreat way of rallying others to support persecuted Christians. What do you do in your church?Mainly raising awareness by sharing information. I share news with mychurch, from Release magazine and other sources, and sometimes write anitem for our church newsletter.Sometimes I’ll show a clip from a DVD, or encourage letter-writing. I’ve justset up a small display about Sri Lanka, and we plan to highlight the petitionin due course.Last May we held an open-air meeting (in our car park) to support the GreatOutdoors Church Service. What response do you get? Many people are not really aware of how Christians in other countries cansuffer for their faith, and can be horrified to hear what is happening. Soraising awareness is really important.Would you encourage others to volunteer in this way?Yes! You learn so much about the church worldwide. I’ve gained so muchfrom hearing the testimonies of persecuted believers in countries such asChina, Nigeria and North Korea. Their suffering can be distressing, but theirtestimonies are inspiring. It’s not just a one-way process: it’s deepened myfaith.
