Fourth Sunday of Lent
Lectionary: 31 Gospel JN 9:1-41
Spiritual Reflection: Do we allow God to
work on His time?
Spiritual Questions:
1. Have you experienced living in Christ’s
light?
2. If your brother were picked as a future
king, would you be happy for him?
3. When in trouble, do you have the
persistence of the blind man in seeking
Christ’s help?
4. When life frustrates you, are you more apt
to light a candle or curse the darkness?
5. What risks are you willing to take?

1. Corona Virus
If you do not come to Mass, I invite you to
pray over the readings for the Sunday and
pray the following prayer for Spiritual
Communion:
My Jesus, I believe that You are present
in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You
above all things, and I desire to receive
You into my soul. Since I cannot at this
moment receive You sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart. I
embrace You as if You were already there
and unite myself wholly to You. Never
permit me to be separated from You.
Amen.
I would also encourage you to consider
signing up for online giving by going to our
parish website and following the links.
2. Legacy Wall
“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his
love endures forever,” 1 Chronicles 16:34.
We are waiting on just a few more items to
come into the office and then we will begin
the process of trying to thank everyone
who has participated and give you all a
final total.
3. Saint Joseph the Dreamer
Through a strange set of circumstances, a
woman has come forward to offer the
parish a beautiful statue of St. Joseph the
Dreamer for our Church at no cost to the
parish. The life-size statue depicts St.
Joseph sleeping. It is meant to remind us
of the three times God spoke to St. Joseph
in his dreams. The first, when he was told
by Gabriel to “not be afraid” and to take
Mary as his wife. The second, when he
was warned to take Mary and Jesus to
Egypt in order to protect them from Herod.
The third and final time, when Joseph was
told that it was safe to return to Israel. We
are planning on blessing this statue on
Friday, May 1
st
. Please mark your calendar
now for we are hoping that this will be a
huge parish event.
4. Oratory
We are a very active parish with many
different groups meeting but have only one
“worship space” (The Church). Over the
next few weeks, we will be transforming
Room 15 into an oratory (a small chapel
without the Blessed Sacrament). We hope
that this will be a great place for people to
come together for prayer activities,
especially rosaries. We may also have a
few weekday evening Masses in the
Oratory when other groups need the
Church.
5. Saint Louis House
The upstairs of 520 St. Joseph Lane (Fr.
Ricardo’s house) will soon be available to
groups. When you walk into the house,
immediately to the left is the St. Vincent
Room. If you go forward into the house,
you will enter the St. Rose Philippine
Duchene Room. There is a third bedroom
in the house that will be reserved for our
quilters and we are calling that room the
Blessed Blanche Room (after St. Louis’
mother). When using the rooms upstairs
please remember that Fr. Ricardo will be
living in the basement.
6. Exploring the Mass
During the Eucharistic Prayer, we as
Catholics believe that the bread and wine
on the altar become the Body and Blood of
Jesus Christ. The outside remains the
same but the inside changes. My niece
once removed all the DVD’s from her
family’s DVD cases and when she put them
back she did not care to match the DVD’s
with the cases. This resulted in a “Dora the
Explorer” DVD in a “Star Wars” case. The
outside said “Star Wars” but the inside
was “Dora.” Something similar happens in
the Mass.
7. Fish Fries
Game warden: Didn’t you see the no-
fishing sign, son?
Boy: I’m not fishing, sir. I’m teaching these
worms how to swim!
Don’t forget our great Fish Fries every
Friday from 4:30-7:15pm!

like to make some short videos promoting
our parish. If you are interested, please
plan on attending a meeting on Tuesday,

“There is an
everyday
heroism, made up of gestures of
sharing, big or small, which build up
an authentic culture of life… Part of
this daily heroism is also the silent
but effective and eloquent witness of
all those ‘brave mothers who devote
themselves to their own family
without reserve, who suffer in giving
birth to their children and who are
ready to make any effort, to face any
sacrifice, in order to pass on to them
the best of themselves’… We thank
you, heroic mothers, for your
invincible love! We thank you for
your intrepid trust in God and in his
love. We thank you for the sacrifice of
your life” (The Gospel of Life 86).
During Lent we commit
to prayer, fasting and
almsgiving. Please
remember our neighbors
in need especially during
this time of beautiful reflection. Most
of them are experiencing serious
financial difficulties and your
continued support from donations
and special offerings allows us to
insert some much needed light into
their lives. For those who receive
support, we pass along their
thanks! If you or someone you know
needs help, please call 636-779-5616.

“Not as man sees does God see, because man
sees the appearance but the Lord looks into
the heart.” - 1 Samuel 16:7
How often do we invest our time,
talent and treasure in creating an
appearance that does not matter at all
to God? We strive to impress with
our clothing, home, career,
possessions, car and other marks of
distinction. But none of these
illusions of greatness will impress
God. Instead, He will look into our
hearts to see how much we loved
Him, how much we loved others and
how we showed that love by the way
we used our time, talent and treasure
here on earth.

Spiritual Ponderings
Trust
“If we do not fill our mind with prayer, it will fill itself with anxieties, worries, temptations,
resentments, and unwelcome memories.” - Scott Hahn. Prayer is building a relationship with
God and all relationships need trust to grow, and so let us continue to reflect on the idea of
trust. Quotes from Stephen M.R. Covey’s book The Speed of Trust: The One Thing that Changes
Everything will be in bold my commentary in normal type.
As my father so eloquently taught, “If you think the problem is out there, that very
thought is the problem.” As we eventually taught the people on each level of this major
corporation, your boss, your division leader, your CEO, your board, your spouse, your
children, your friends, your associates may all have problems as far as trust (or anything
else) is concerned, but that does not mean that you are powerless! In fact, you probably
have no idea how powerful you can be in changing the level of trust in any relationship if
you know how to work “from the inside out.”
The only person that I can control in life is myself. All I can do is change the way I respond to
the way people act toward me. Stephen talks about how we get to choose how we see the
world, what we say, and how we behave. Personal growth requires us to realize that we
cannot control what people throw at us but we can control how we react toward someone. I
cannot stop someone from throwing an insult at me but I can either take the insult to heart or
dismiss it and not let it bother me. It takes time and practice but eventually you can learn to
identify your thoughts and choose an appropriate response instead of just reacting.
Leadership is getting results in a way that inspires trust… The means are as important as
the end. How you go about achieving results is as important as the results themselves,
because when you establish trust, you increase your ability to get results the next time.
And there’s always a next time. To get things done in a way that destroys trust is not
only shortsighted and counterproductive; it is ultimately unsustainable.
How one achieves his or her goal is just as important as what the goal is. In the Church’s
morality, the end never justify the means. We are called to be a people of integrity.
“Trust is absolutely key to long-term success. – Jim Burke, Former Chairman and CEO,
of Johnson and Johnson.
I would say that being trustworthy is absolutely key to ETERNAL success. In heaven, we will
not be able to lie or exaggerate our accomplishments. We should therefore prepare ourselves
for heaven by accepting who we are right now and try to be a trustworthy person and not
someone who exaggerates his or her accomplishments.
Credibility is a leader’s currency. With it, he or she is solvent; without it, he or she is
bankrupt. – John Maxwell.
My first pastor always encouraged me to “earn” my blue chips. I have come to discover the
more people get to know me the more they learn to trust me, and so I try to take time to allow
people to get to know me. That’s why I do a lot of listening sessions and not town hall
meetings.
Stephen then lays out four core aspects of being a credible person:
First, that you are a person of integrity—that you are honest and congruent, that you
have a reputation for being truthful and that you would not lie.
Second, that you have good intent—that you’re not trying to deceive or protect anyone,
that you don’t have any hidden motive or agenda that would color your testimony.
Third, that your credentials are excellent, that you do, indeed, have expertise
knowledge, skill, and capability in the area in which you are called to testify.
And fourth, that you have a good track record, that you have demonstrated your
capabilities effectively in other situations in the past, that you produce results and that
there is good reason to believe that you will do so now.
I cannot say one thing and do another. My actions and words have to line up otherwise I will
be called a liar and no one will trust me or want to follow me. When we tell someone we want
to help but in reality we are using them or distracting them, it is called manipulation and no
one likes to be manipulated. We must be honest about are abilities, otherwise we will over-
exaggerate them and destroy our credibility.

Stephen Ministry Balance: Stability produced
by even distribution of weight or forces. Our
lives are delicately balanced. A small shift in
one area of life can set us off balance. A major
change can send us spinning out of control.
Stephen Ministers can help when life gets out of balance.
They listen and care, and most importantly, bring the
stability of Jesus’ love and grace into people’s lives. If your
life or that of someone you know has shifted out of balance,
consider Stephen Ministry. For information call Anne Grant,

Remembering Vocations in your Lenten Devotions
March 22—Fourth Sunday of Lent: “Lent is a season of
intense prayer, fasting and concern for those in need. It offers
all Christians an opportunity to prepare for Easter by serious
discernment about their lives, with particular attention to the
word of God, which enlightens the daily journey of all who
believe.” - Message of His Holiness Pope John-Paul II for Lent 2003
Prayer for Vocations
Heavenly Father, Lord of the harvest, call forth vocations to
the priesthood and consecrated life from our diocese and our
families. Inspire men to imitate Christ, the Eternal High Priest,
in sacrificial service to your Church. Move the hearts of men
and women to offer themselves wholly to You in poverty,
chastity and obedience. Send them as laborers for Your harvest.
Inspire the faithful to support them with prayers and sacrifice.
Raise up holy families who foster openness to your call. We
ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

2020 U.S. Census Quick Facts
Census Day 2020 is approaching! By
April 1, every home in the U.S. will
receive information from the U.S.
Census Bureau on how to respond to
the U.S. Census. It is important that
all Missourians are counted in the
census so that our state may have
accurate representation in Congress
and adequate funding for local
hospitals, first responders, and critical
social programs. Your responses will
be kept anonymous. The MCC has put
together a one-page fact sheet on the
2020 U.S. Census that you can find at
mocatholic.org. For even more info on
what to expect and how to respond,
visit www.2020census.gov.
Coronavirus Update
The continuing concerns of the coronavirus (COVID-19) spread has prompted several
precautionary measures to be implemented at St. Joseph Church.
Following discussions with archdiocesan leadership and consultation with the St. Louis
Department of Health and the CDC, Archbishop Robert Carlson has updated his directive
and is now mandating that all parishes within the Archdiocese of St. Louis adhere to the
health and safety measures that were previously recommended. These mandates include:
• Parishioners should not come to Mass, church activities or school if they are feeling
sick or if their immune systems are compromised. It is not a sin to miss Mass when
they are sick.
• Suspend the physical exchange of the sign of peace. Use a hand gesture or bow instead.
(NOTE: We are not suspending the sign of peace altogether during this time, just the
manner in which it is extended.)
• Holy Communion distributed by the Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion will
be administered in the hand only. Parishioners should receive Holy Communion in the
hand; however, as this is a celebration of God’s love for us and the most important part
of our Mass, parishioners who still wish to receive Holy Communion on the tongue
should receive from the Mass celebrant only.
• The distribution of the Precious Blood of Holy Communion via the chalice is
suspended until further notice.
• Holy Water fonts will remain drained and left empty at this time.
The Office of Communications and Planning has created and continues to update a landing
page at archstl.org/coronavirus that will address issues about this illness.
We are very appreciative of your understanding and cooperation during this period of
uncertainty and concern. Understand that we are monitoring conditions and should any
previously stated mandates change, notification will come through the website and the
parish bulletin.
