Safecast-6Dor the next 3 years...

2013-02-15by Kalin KOZHUHAROV <kalin@safecast.org>

Who am I ?

● Information Security professional (paid)○ investigate what happened (DF)○ help fix the problem (IR)○ design better systems (consulting)

● Geek○ radiation○ electronics○ open stuff

● Father

How do I achieve things?

● (always) looking for problems...● (constanly) optimizing "things"...● (regularly) perform risk assesments...● (sometimes) smile and even laugh

● ask and answer "the hard questions"● stay open-minded● act local, plan global● act now, plan for the future

What is Safecast-6D

● A project to refactor current "platform"○ sensors○ gathering data○ storing data○ visualizing data○ using data

● Augument current data○ fixed network○ lab/food measuremnts

● Go to a new level, gather "6D data"○ CPM, time, location, +energy

Why do we need energy data?

Let's go back where we started...

A Geiger counter and a Gamma Spectrometer

... but before that ...

Let's go back to simple counting, to make things clear for everybody.

Can you count?

Result 1

We have 27 bills (or counts), GREAT!

Really?How much is that worth?

How do we count "properly"?

Result 2

We have 27 bills (or counts), GREAT!We sortted (binned) them, accounbted for each bill's value and now we know the total value!

But once we have the total value, we still don't know how many 1s and 5s we got that from...

Act locally, plan globally...

That was a simple example only!

Now let's rule the world! (hint: go international)

... back to radiation

We were "lucky", because Fukushima troubles ended with mostly similar isotope mix everywhere, and mostly similar isotopes (Cs-134/Cs-137)!

So we could simplify measuring to counting! All bills were roughly the same (once we filtered out β).But generally that is not the case...

So?

A manufacturer of Cadmium-Zinc-Telluride (CZT) contacted us last month, so we have a path forward!

Kromek Group plc., thank you for the quick reaction time!

Safecast-6D

Safecast-6D: the rulez

● Universal Radiation Sensor Unit (URSU): one sensor to rule them all (in a way)○ fixed○ mobile○ lab/food

● As open as possible● As cheap as practical● planned, tested, crowdfunded in a year● (ab)using infrastructure/system that are

already present

Safecast-6D: refactoring the back

● Use syslog protocol from the sensor device● Use syslog-ng server to log data

○ scalability○ openness○ comonnes

● Process data, near real-time, into round-robin databases (RRD)○ calculate averages, filters, etc.○ analyze, set off alarms

● Visualize RRD data and link to original (and a map of course)

Some data...
