IMPORTANT FTX PACIFIC NORTHWEST COMPATIBILITY NOTICE Installing this KORS Orcas Island Airport requires you to update your FTX Pacific Northwest region with the PNW.003 (or higher version) patch. Please visit http://fullterrain.com/support.html#pnw to get the latest PNW patch.
This patch will ensure your airport elevations are correctly set, and all roads and traffic are correctly aligned. It will also ensure the coastlines and shores are corrected from the default PNW levels. Note: at the time of release of this airport the current PNW patch level was PNW.003 This version may now be numbered higher, so just install the latest PNW.XXX patch always.
To install the PNW.XXX patch
1. Run FTX Central and make sure your region is set to North America 2. Apply the PNW.XXX patch
Note: You don't need to apply the patch before installing these airports; it's quite safe to apply the patch after
you've installed them.

Thank You! Orbx would like to thank you for purchasing FTX US KORS Orcas Island Airport (KORS). KORS Orcas Island is the third airport for Orbx Pacific Northwest by well-established development team Andreas Hegi and Heiko Glatthorn, whose previous collaborations include the acclaimed YHBA Hervey Bay Airport in 2009 and 1S2 Darrington Muni and 3W5 Concrete Muni Airports in 2010. These two talented
developers have gained a reputation for creating charming GA airports with real character, and they always strive to add those extra touches with every new project they deliver. KORS is no exception to that rule, offering a rich audio visual experience in a unique island setting.
Orcas Island History
The name "Orcas" is a shortened form of Horcasitas, or Juan Vicente de Güemes Padilla Horcasitas y Aguayo, 2nd Count of Revillagigedo, the Viceroy of Mexico who sent an exploration expedition under Francisco de Eliza to the Pacific Northwest in 1791. During the voyage, Eliza explored part of the San Juan Islands. He did not apply the name Orcas specifically to Orcas Island, but rather to part of the archipelago. In 1847 Henry Kellett assigned the name Orcas to Orcas Island during his reorganization of the British Admiralty charts. It was this work of Kellett's that eliminated the patriotically American names that Charles Wilkes had given to
many features of the San Juans during the Wilkes Expedition of 1838-1842. Wilkes had named Orcas Island "Hull Island", after Commodore Isaac Hull. Other features of Orcas Island named by Wilkes include "Ironsides Inlet" for East Sound, and "Guerrier Bay" for West Sound. One of the names Wilkes gave remains, that of Mount Constitution. Wilkes' names follow a pattern: Isaac Hull was the commander of "Old Ironsides" (the USS Constitution) and won fame after capturing the British warship Guerriere in the War of 1812.

Geography With a land area of 57.3 square miles (148.4 km²) and a population of 4,453 (2000 census), Orcas Island is slightly larger, but less populous, than neighboring San Juan Island. Orcas is shaped like a pair of saddlebags, separated by fjord-like East Sound, with Massacre Bay on the south side, and tiny Skull Island just off the coast. At the northern end of the island is the village of Eastsound, the largest town on Orcas and the second largest in San Juan County. In 1989 the Lummi Nation regained a village and burial site on Orcas Island's
Madrona Point near Eastsound, and now operates it as Madrona Point Park, a private preserve characterized by hundreds of twisting madrona trees sprouting from the rocky shoreline. Other, smaller towns - or hamlets - on the island include Orcas (where the inter-island/mainland ferry lands), West Sound (technically part of Eastsound), Deer Harbor, Rosario (technically part of Eastsound), Olga and Doe Bay.
Orcas Island is accessible by air via Eastsound Airport (KORS) or water landings by seaplane as well as by water via the Washington State Ferry system or private watercraft. During the summer season, there is an island shuttle that runs from the ferry landing to Eastsound and other points.
Sights The Orcas Island Historical Museum is located down town Eastsound and is the only object-based, interpretive heritage facility for the island, with a permanent collection containing approximately 6000 objects, paper documents and photographs. Orcas Island is also home to three historic camps: Camp Orkila, Four Winds Westward Ho and Camp Indralaya.
KORS Facilities and Traffic
Orcas Island Airport covers an area of 64 acres (26 ha) which contains one asphalt paved runway (16/34) measuring 2,900 x 60 ft (884 x 18 m).
For the 12-month period ending December 31, 2005, the airport had 61,600 aircraft operations, an average of 168 per day: 69% GA, 20% air taxi and 11% scheduled commercial. There are 75 aircraft based at this airport:
96% single engine and 4% multi-engine.

Orbx FTX Pacific Northwest is required for full functionality This airport scenery addon is designed to work with Microsoft Flight Simulator X and Orbx FTX Pacific Northwest (FTX PNW). It will work fine without FTX PNW but please note the limitations below.
Here's what is required to run this airport scenery as Orbx designed it to:
PRODUCT
Version(s)
Why
Microsoft Flight Simulator X (FSX)
• Standard Edition
• Deluxe Edition
• Acceleration Addon Pack (not a stand-alone product)
• Gold Edition (which includes all three versions above)
If you don't have FSX already, the best version to
purchase would be the Gold Edition, which already
includes all versions and service packs SP1 and SP2.
The base product required.
All Orbx products are made for
FSX and don't run by
themselves.
Orbx FTX Pacific Northwest (Download)
This is a downloadable FTX region pack which you can
purchase from the Orbx fullterrain.com website. It's
designed to work specifically with FSX
The FTX region covering the
airport location
Orbx FTX Pacific Northwest (DVD)
For convenient installation, the Orbx FTX USA Canada
Pacific Northwest region is also available as a DVD.
This offers a quick and easy installation of the entire FTX
Pacific Northwest region in which KORS is located.
(Optional)
An alternative way to purchase
FTX PNW on a handy quick to
install DVD covering the Pacific
Northwest region

Quick Installation Guide
Whether you are installing Orbx KORS from the downloaded FlightSimStore wrapper installer or the DVD purchased from an Orbx Reseller, the procedure is very similar. DOWNLOADED FSS WRAPPER EDITION
STEP INSTRUCTIONS
1 Unzip the FlightSimStore.com (FSS) downloaded ZIP file. You should end up with the FSS installer application OrbxFTXKORS100.exe
2 Run OrbxFTXKORS100.exe
3 Fill in the Order Number, Date and Key when requested. This information would have been emailed to you when you purchased the download version of KORS from FSS.
4 The wrapper will unwrap the Orbx installer which will then run and present the opening installation screen. Please acknowledge the EULA page and continue. You cannot choose a destination folder, since all Orbx products are installed into the ORBX folder in the FSX folder
5 Once the Orbx installer has completed, start FSX and choose KORS as your starting location
ORBX RESELLER DVD EDITION
STEP INSTRUCTIONS
1 Insert the KORS DVD into your computer's DVD drive. If you have autorun enabled, the installer will start automatically, or prompt you to run Setup_KORS.exe If you don't have autorun enabled, please use Windows Explorer to open the DVD contents
then run the Setup_KORS.exe application
2 The Orbx installer which will then run and present the opening installation screen. Please acknowledge the EULA page and continue. You cannot choose a destination folder, since all Orbx products are installed into the ORBX folder in the FSX folder
3 Once the Orbx installer has completed, start FSX and choose KORS as your starting location

Manual Scenery Library Configuration If you do NOT have Orbx FTX installed you can still use this scenery by manually adding the scenery library entry from within Flight Simulator X. Here's the steps required to configure the scenery library.
1. Run Flight Simulator X, then select Settings | Scenery Library 2. Click on the Add Area button 3. A folder browser window will pop up.
4. Navigate to the ORBX \ FTX_NA folder
5. Now select the FTXAA_KORS folder and click OK
6. You will then see two folders displayed, Scenery and Texture. Now click OK* *(Note: If you're using Windows 7, click anywhere in the white portion of the folder browser screen that shows the Scenery and Texture folder, not the OK button - there's a bug with FSX under Windows 7) 7. You will now be taken back to the Scenery Library list of scenery added, and the airport will now be
displayed at the top of the list. You can now load up a flight at the airport using the "Free Flight" menu.

WA35 Clam Harbor and W49 Rosario
As a bonus addition to further your enjoyment of the Orcas Island scenery, the development team have also included another grass airfield (WA35 Clam Harbor) and a seaplane base (W49 Rosario) with correct starting
points available from the FSX menu. Note if you have the OZx WA35 Clam Harbor installed, the KORS installer
will automatically remove it for you.
Here's two screenshots showing each location:

The FTX Aero Tool
When you first install this scenery, the installer will automatically add a Windows desktop shortcut to FTX
Aero for you. There is also a shortcut in the Start Menu under the Orbx program group. When you launch the Aero tool, its interface looks similar to this:
It’s very simple to use. FTX Aero replaces three global FSX textures when you apply the choices from its interface. These are:
• Detail Bump Map – This is an overlay texture which is designed to add “noise” and remove
smoothness from ground textures. FSX comes with its own detail1.bmp file which is very generic and does not really enhance airport ground environments. The FTX Aero version creates three different styles of bump mapping for asphalt or concrete surfaces.
• Runway 18 Texture – Orbx GA airfields will generally have runway18.dds encoded in their APX files. This is a runway used predominately in Australian smaller airports. The FTX Aero version has much better detail than the FSX default. You can choose from 1024x1024 or 2048x2048 resolution. Note that this setting has no impact at KORS since we provide photoreal poly runways
• Taxiway Markings – Again, Aero will provide two variants, the first being a yellow faded line suitable for asphalt, the second being a yellow/black line suited to concrete. Again, this is more a feature for Orbx (and any other) airport which uses the APX file to lay down taxiway lines.
Just make your choice and the texture appearance will be shown in the preview window. FTX Aero will automatically make a backup of whatever textures you currently have installed. You can go back to your default installed texture at any time by just selecting ‘Your Default’ as the choice.

The Audio Sound Pack
This scenery (like YHBA Hervey Bay, 1S2 Darrington and 3W5 Concrete made by the same team) includes an Audio Sound Pack which can greatly enhance the realism of the airport and town, especially if you are exploring the area on foot (using Orbx's BOB utility) or in a car (using downloadable vehicles for FSX).
The airport image below shows you the locations of the ambient sound trigger points. Some sounds are louder than others, and the distance to trigger each one varies. They also play at intervals, which means that you may need to stay in one place for a little while in order to hear them (for example the telephone and ATC chatter at the FBO does not play continuously).
• If you wish to reduce the volume of these sounds, alter the 'environment' audio levels within FSX.
• If you wish to disable some or all of these sounds, just un-tick them from the KORS Control Panel.
Orbx FTX KORS Orcas Island Airport Version 1.0 DVD Edition User Guide – November 2010 Page 12
The KORS Control Panel After KORS is installed, a Control Panel icon is placed onto your Windows desktop. You can also use FTX Central to access the KORS Control Panel from the main FTX Central interface.
The Control Panel will enable you to disable or enable certain scenery features of the airport to allow it to perform in accordance with the PC hardware you have. By default, all scenery options are enabled by the installer. You can also disable the individual Audio Sound Pack sounds using the Control Panel.
To disable or enable any feature, simply select it from the list for a brief description of what it is. To disable an
item, simply click the tickbox. Any changes are made instantly and there is no ‘Apply’ button required. You may click on each item’s description in the list to see the explanation, and this does not trigger the on/off switchbox. This will allow you to consider which items to disable.

Quick Reference FSX Settings The table below lists in a handy reference the minimum recommended settings required in FSX to enjoy KORS the way Orbx designed it. These settings run well on most PCs and take particular advantage of the custom mesh and photoreal imagery used in the scenery area. If you use the settings below you will enjoy a high fidelity experience and good performance.
Setting Value Why?
Level of detail radius Large Reduces blurring of textures
Global Texture Resolution Max Best displays photoreal textures
Mesh Complexity 100 Better terrain definition
Mesh Resolution 5m 5m is recommended for this airport scenery and flatter roads
Texture Resolution 7cm or 15cm Sharpest roads and freeways (15cm to avoid micro stutters)
Scenery Complexity Extremely
Dense
How Orbx designed KORS
Autogen Density Normal-
Dense Best FPS versus detail More discussion on this on page 17
regarding setting this slider according to your PC specs
Aircraft AI Traffic 100% Recommended for KORS
Road Vehicles 12% No need to set higher for KORS

Recommended FSX Slider Settings Firstly, like default FSX, dragging all your sliders to the right even with today’s modern hardware, will for most people result in very poor visuals and performance. We suggest that you begin your exploration of KORS using the slider settings shown below, and then if you find performance to be acceptable, you can move certain sliders to the right, although we recommend you only move one slider at a time to gauge the effect.
The most critical slider in FSX is the Autogen Density slider. With the way KORS has been designed, it has the single most critical performance effect in the simulator. We'll discuss the best settings for this slider later. So before you begin your first flight, please change your FSX sliders to what is shown on the following pages. You may think the settings are too low at first, but we're calling these the KORS BASE SETTINGS which is the
recommended settings for medium spec PCs.
Orbx FTX KORS Orcas Island Airport Version 1.0 DVD Edition User Guide – November 2010 Page 15
* Please refer to the Autogen Density Table further in this user guide for specific information about this slider

The Autogen Density Slider Because FTX uses much denser, more accurately placed autogen objects in its annotation, having it set to Extemely Dense in large cities like Vancouver, Seattle or Portland will bring even the most powerful PC to its knees. We won't mince our words - FTX is not designed to give you a 60FPS experience with all sliders maxed. The key thing to remember is that KORS is designed to be used both today and in the FUTURE, meaning that
we did not cripple the product on release to cater for a broad range of PCs, but rather created a standard which will be enjoyed by most people as hardware catches up. Here's a simple table which should be used as a guide for the Autogen Density slider. This has been indexed to PCs as at January 2010, which means this table will become dated rather quickly. We expect the 'Extreme'
spec PC to be the Entry Level by mid 2012, so of course as FSX gets older, your PCs are likely to get faster. That said, if you adhere to these slider settings in KORS you will get a good balance between visuals and performance.

Product Technical Support Orbx has a very simple support policy: “No question unanswered”. That means, should you have any questions about KORS or its use, please feel free to register on the forums at fullterrain.com and then log a support question in the FTX Payware Support Forum section. Orbx FTX experts will be available to review your support questions and you will usually get a reply on the forums within 12 hours, often much sooner than that.
To visit the our support forums, click on the button shown above from the fullterrain.com front page
or click on Help | Orbx FTX Support Forums from FTX Central
Please do NOT email support requests
Orbx provides world-class support on our forums, and it's the only way in which you can receive support for KORS. Provided you adhere to the forum terms of use and have a legitimate copy of KORS, you will always be offered our support at no cost as we work toward a problem resolution each time. However, if you email Orbx asking for support, you will most likely not receive an answer at all, since our
policy is that all support is provided through our forums only. Use the forum ‘Search’ function
Before you post a question, please try searching for the answer first, using the forum’s built-in search function
located on the forum menu bar.
What to Include in Your Support Forum Requests If at all possible, this is what we’d like to see provided for each request you log:
• A separate post on the FTX support forums for each issue (don't tag new issue reports onto others) • Include your ORDER NUMBER from your KORS purchase in your post or forum signature section • A screenshot to highlight what you are talking about • A descriptive post title which clearly states what the issue is • Detailed comments in your post about what you are reporting on
The Orbx support team is always on standby to assist you with any problems you may have, or will comment on your issue reports. Please remember, our priority is fixing any urgent issues first, and addressing bug reports second. Clearly though, any “show stopper” bugs will be given top priority though.
