Answers – Magic Squares – Level 4

Using your planners show me how you found this

Today I will learn to solve algebraic problems involving multiple unknowns Level 6

Challenge Objective:

Solve algebraic problems involving multiple/ negative unknowns Level 6+

Key Words

Substitute, Unknown, Generate, Term, Inverse, Describe, Negative

•All will find the magic number

•Most will find the unknowns on a level 6 problem

•Some will find unknowns in the level 6+ problem

Have you heard of the Key WordsKey Words I know what it

means, which is...

Heard it but not sure what it means

Never heard it before

• The yellow circles add together to make the green squares.

• A, B and C are positive whole numbers, can you find what they are?

Do we all get the same for A, B & C?

Who’s correct?

Let’s do it using algebra and then we know we have the correct answers!

• The yellow circles add together to make the green squares.

Success CriteriaStep 1) Write down what we knowA + B = 14B + C = 11A + C = 13. Step 2) Choose 2 sums and put them together, A + B + B + C = 14 + 11Step 3) Simplify itA + 2B + C = 25. Step 4) Take out what you canTake out of this A + C = 13, which leaves 2B = 12, so B is 6. Step 5) Put in the letter you have worked out and then it is easy to work the rest of the numbers out.
