Let’s Do It! World Cleanup and World Waste Map

Kadi KenkHead of Regional Coordinators

Let’s Do It! cleanup model:

First you have 1 country troubled with illegal dumping

Then you have concerned peopleto take up the initiative

They start the mapping of the garbage

raise the issue in public and invite the whole society to cooperate and

clean it all up in just 1 day and HAVE FUN!

Let’s Do It! 2008 in Estonia

Preparation time - 7 months Team - more than 600 volunteersMapping of the waste - 300 volunteers, mapping

weekends, special softwareMore than 500 partnersA zero-budget campaign with opinion leaders,

actors, musicians, sportsmenRaising the issue and gaining support of the public

and the media

1. Geomapping the trash for planning and logistics

2. Searching for partners from the private, public and NGO sector. They got 90% of services for free

3. Building up a network of local leaders who help to plan and manage the clean-up day

4. Broad media campaign prior to the clean-up action to recruit volunteers and raise public awareness of the dumping and littering problem

5. Registrating volunteers: 40 000 volunteers, 5 000 teams

6. Logistics, how to manage the waste collected

Raising awareness = mapping

Long term results

1. The amount of illegal waste drastically reduced.

2. New level of public awareness about the waste issues.

3. Successful co-operation experience throughout the whole society.

4. New wave of ambitious civic actions (e.g. World Cleanup)

It’s estimated that there is approx 100 million tons of illegal garbage lying around in the world. Waste is not just an esthetic issue – it’s also about health, cooperation and responsibility.

We need to stop looking away from the waste and start looking at it as an unused resource.

To build up awareness and start addressing the illegal dumping problem we need to:

•Monitor the situation in detail;

•Engage local communities actively in the process;

•Engage local authorities actively in the process;

•Analyze the data to design and execute a cooperation action.
